Second try for running my O.S. Rocket on coal, at the KMYCA track

I am amazed by the tractive effort. A wonderful engine indeed.
@RichardASK3 жыл бұрын
That was absolutely brilliant. I was also amazed at the traction. It makes you realise how much work and planning ahead the old drivers and firemen had to do to keep a consistently high speed journey going, on the old steamers. Best 9 minutes spent recently.

Hi Chris - Thanks - actually I managed about 10 laps without any problems, but my camera corrupted the file ... this was teh second try after I noticed i couldn't play it back. The track has been gone now for over a year, fingers crossed we'll manage to build a new one by the end of the year! If so, you and your Britannia are cordially invited to the opening!

A lot of power must get lost in that.
@MBANZUKE3 жыл бұрын
The tractive effort produced by such a small drive wheel/rail contact is amazing. I don't know the potential power output of this unit but just to be able to pull that weight with so little downforce available on those driving wheels is amazing.! As said in previous comments - this little unit is powerful, now scale that up to the likes of Tornado or Flying Scotsman and you can see why they became the preferred power units for so many years.! One thing to bear in mind though is that despite the means of power - albeit, steam, electric, or whatever - the tractive effort and wheel/rail adhesion is still the most important factor - not only with getting going (accelerating) but most of all slowing and stopping.!
@picrijogil3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely ... the tractive effort in this case is theoretically limited to about half of the weight of the engine, which weighs 9kg, but it definitely slips much sooner than that. It helps to push down a bit onto the steam dome, especially when pulling more weight. It can pull an extra wagon with a child or three, but that is really hard work for the poor little engine. I expect the tractive force to be something in the neighborhood of 0.500 kg force (or about 5N). Your comment about stopping is noted - however, with a train this light, you can just put your feet down ;)

Rocket!! Lovely little steam she is, but she must be very hard to keep going.
@couzeukian51223 жыл бұрын
I think that is a brilliant little engine. Sounds good as well when it is working hard. It can be tricky to maintain water, pressure and a hot fire on larger engines, so I think you did amazingly well. On larger engines you can add coal while leaving bright areas of fire. I would imagine the firebox is so tiny on your Rocket, that one scoop of coal blackens most of the fire.

Thanks Ian - the thing is I managed to do 10 laps of the track without a hitch before this take, but the camera corrupted the file - honest!

Few tips that may help: Its important to keep the fire hole door closed as much as possible. To this end I would use a shoot rather than a shovel. Check the blast pipe nozzle, may be a little large. Reduce the ram size on the axle pump if possible. Is the lubricator working ok? Also check there are no air leaks round the smokebox.
@picrijogil4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Harold - in theory I know all of this. The water pump is adjustable, the lubricator works fine, and the blast nozzle is also fine. It's just that I usually run the loco on propane to cut down on the mess... and that is a lot easier. For a challenge, however ... :)
@haroldpearson60254 жыл бұрын
@@picrijogilMany thanks for your response. I have built 6 locos 2 in each model gauge. The smallest being a Tich and Juliet. The axle pump on Tich was 5/16 ram which caused considerable hydraulic hammer. I reduced the ram size to 1/4 which made things much more manageable. Lagging the boiler also helped a lot. Do you use the blower whilst running, you shouldn't need to?

Amazing that this little machine can pull your weight and that there is enough friction so that the wheels don't spin. How does that work? Doesn't look like the machine ist heavy enough to get that much pressure on the wheels.
@picrijogil9 жыл бұрын
Rocket weighs a little over 9 kg, and doesn't have too much traction. However, on flat track, and with ball bearings in the driving wagon, it works well enough. With heavier loads (another wagon and a couple of kids) it helps to push down on the Loco behind the steam dome. In the rain though, nothing helps...
@serioustrouble639 жыл бұрын
picrijogil Thank you, fascinating, how much power the loco has, if you look at the size of the cylinders and rods.
@picrijogil9 жыл бұрын
serioustrouble63 You don't really need much to pull a wagon over railroad track - I estimate Rocket has about 5N (half a kg force) of pulling power at the drawbar. The loco can literally be stopped with two fingers. It has a bore of 17mm and a stroke of 38mm, but runs on steam at 6 bar.
@serioustrouble639 жыл бұрын
picrijogil o.k., 6 bar is an number! I love modelling and would like to build a live steam loco, but I think I have a big lack of patience.... BTW, is this track in a public park?

Who took the time and money to build the elevated concrete track ? Must have been a true train enthusiast ??
@picrijogil3 жыл бұрын
It was the club track of the KMYCA club, in a public park near Antwerp in Belgium. Club members built all of it in the 1980s, but in 2016 it was demolished to make room for sport fields. We were allocated a different location in the park, and the province of Antwerp was kind enough to hire a contractor for pouring and placing the (new) concrete beams. The club membership then completed the circuit with the necessary bridges, elevated switches, steaming bays, and all 330m of triple-gauge track. This is the new track: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fb17fbqgnt7apIE.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJtmlpaKkq-1aIk.html
