My friend Adrian is a tech guru, and a coffee nerd. Tech Nerd + Coffee Nerd = Decent Espresso machine.
The Decent has appealed to me logically, but not aesthetically, so when he asked me over to try it, I jumped at the chance. I took the same beans with me as I had used to make my morning espresso that day and compared shots and workflow.
This is NOT a review, just me having coffee with a friend and sharing some thoughts.

I'm a London based Decent owner and the thing that I think people get blinded by is that the tablet has a lot of information and you can get lost in the data HOWEVER you don't need to. Your most interesting comment was that this was the first shot and it was good, the data provided from the graphs can help you dial in an even better shot and the software can protect you from things going wrong (so that the result is acceptable). As such I have been impressed. The biggest thing to remember is you don't have to play all the time once you have something you like you can just push the button and away you go, personally I like the DSx front end as it mirrors the scale data onto the tablet and allows you to store that data into the visualiser database. It's all unnecessary but I've realised that grinding and puck prep are so hard that something that can protect you from that early morning messed up puck prep is worth it. Glad you enjoyed the espresso - and that is the key if it tastes good you should be happy. Its also very small for a good espresso machine which makes it very usable in a domestic setting with limited counter top.

All true points Alan. It's still not the aesthetic I like, but that's just personal preference. It makes great coffee, and frankly I can see it could be a lot of fun!

@@bartalks1810 I agree I wanted a shiny espresso machine and then I realised I wanted something I could use and not mess up and that fitted.

I completely agree with your idea. In the traditional coffee industry, there is a tendency to view or ignore the Decent espresso machine negatively, but when you use it yourself, you are satisfied with the many advantages of the Decent espresso machine.

A week into Decent ownership after owning a couple of e61’s and a BDB….Honestly at this point my verdict is my slayer’d Breville dual boiler has been the best machine, I’ve been down all the rabbit holes with the decent in the first week. I love the form factor, the suitcase :), and i think the automation? Gravimetric dosing is cool. Have had a hard time replicating the quality in-cup that i was getting from my breville. If i get there eventually, the decent wins, bc i can play when i want but don’t have to. At this point i would caution people on it…because it will lead you astray and you will waste coffee…eventually i think it will be a good machine for me though.

It is a rabbit hole for sure, but I think for the engineering mindset it's pretty unique. I'm intrigued by the simplicity and aesthetics of a lever machine though. The BDB is great value for what it is, I have to say.

@@bartalks1810 yes, I strongly considered a lever and if I ever move on from the decent(when) I think something like the profitec pro 800 would be at the top of my list…something zen about a manual lever, which I’ve found I’ve lost with the decent for now.

nice, but why is the video flipped? ~All writing is illegible. As a person who roasts his own beans, I would LOVE to have a decent, so that when I have 700g of OK beans, I can experiment to see how I can get more out of them... and then be able to quantify why it is different from another profile... There's no other machine that can do that.
@bartalks1810
@bartalks1810 2 жыл бұрын
yes, well. it's flipped because it was my first time using an iPhone front facing camera, and that's a uniquely exciting feature. If you're interested in roasting beans, you might like the next video I'm putting out soon on Naturals. If I really wanted a challenge, I would roast dry-processed coffee

I wondered the same Alan, turns out the iphone mirrors the image on the front facing camera. I'll have to find out how to fix that in future.

I am surprised that Adrian is only using a Niche with the Decent. Just that the grinder is a key component when making espresso, so even with the best espresso machine, you won't be maximising the taste and texture if you only have a mediocre grinder. The first thing to max out in the chain has to be the grinder; my view at least. Also to compare two espresso machines you need the same grinder as different grinders will have a huge impact on taste and mouth feel. I backed off a Decent because I felt it would take me too far down the rabbit hole and I would be overwhelmed by the options, but that is a matter of personal preference
