Coach Gerry Faust's greatest victory. The un-ranked Fighting Irish shut down Panther's quarterback Dan Marino and freshman Allen Pinkett scores in the 4th consecutive game.

Great uniforms in this game. Also, Pitt hasn't been the same since they left Pitt Stadium.

Pitt never recovered from this loss. They were a consistent national title contender every year from 1976-1982, but this loss really stung.
@trr31603 жыл бұрын
Pitt never has, nor will it ever, recover when it decided in 1982 to not let football get bigger than its almighty Mission Statement. The poor handling of the football program since then tells me a bunch of 10-year olds could have made better decisions. It has a good guy at the helm currently in Narduzzi, but surely will fire him because that is what Pitt does. Then it makes another mediocre hire because the school won’t spend for a proven coach.

+ripperduck Notre Dame had lots of talent, too. Gerry Faust was a great recruiter but couldn't coach, sort of like Michigan pre-Jim Harbaugh. Michigan had talent. Harbaugh gets the same team but wins while UM's two previous coach sucked.

And the beginning of the end, letting Jackie Sherrill walk, Pitt arrogantly thought Serafino "Foge" Fazio would pick up where he left off. Not even close, this was the last time Pitt sniffed #1... Thanks AD Ed Bozik for ruining what could have been a dynasty...

This was the last game where Pitt was ranked No. 1 and it's no surprise. The school hasn't been serious about winning since Sherrill left and made the cheap hire with Fazio in 1982. It's been average to bad hires ever since for the program. Gottfried went 2-2 versus Holtz and Paterno, beat Ohio State but the he butted heads with the administration, who was about to put academic recruiting restrictions in place, hence the terrible 1990s for the football program. Pitt has no problem putting its hands out for conference television revenue but refuses to get dirty in its recruiting to become a better football program. I love this video seeing both uniforms, the crisp fall afternoon, hearing Harry Kalas and seeing how college football used to be televised.

Listen to the sound of this game/clip. Whoever was the technician did a great job. Harry Calas was perfect, but you also got the ambient sound of the crowd/stadium, which gave the video a tremendous amount of momentum and power. The broadcast crew were made up of experts, it's apparent from the tremendous quality of the broadcast. Honestly, much of what we get now isn't this good...

Penn State were national champions at the end of the 1982 season (they beat Notre Dame 24-14 the week following this game). Pitt was #10 in the final AP and #9 in the final UPI. ND was not ranked after going 6-4-1.
@90srule963 жыл бұрын
RocketShark 1982 was a weird year. Pitt was the consensus #1 with Marino back for his senior year (guys actually played all 4 years then), but this weird loss, the L to eventual NC Penn State, then the even weirder 7-3 loss in the Cotton Bowl made this a disappointing year for Pitt, and like we said, they’ve never been the same.

I know that stuff like "48-14" was real popular back when the rivalry was big. Pitt and PSU had a great rivalry, there was some mud throwing from both sides, though. But I follow all 3 teams, and anytime I make bets with family or friends involving those 3, it's point spread over or under and not a pick a team (and we decided that if the other team wins, nobody wins any cash). This year my teams went 1-2 in bowls, but I was happy to see Notre Dame get a bowl win.
@MVillani198515 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was a 12-0 win in 2000, the only 21st century Pennsylvania Classic game. Even though you can't stand Penn State, I'm sure you also miss that old rivalry. Pitt moving from the BE to the B10 would encourage that. The rivalry with Ohio State is the closest thing that has the kind of rivalry history but still, they don't compare. I think it's also the most played B10 team of PSU's with a 12-12 overall record.

Blair Kiel. While freshman starting at the QB position has become almost routine, Blair was the first four-year starter since Gus Dorais. Part of the reason for this is freshmen were ineligible to play for many decades. This was Kiel's junior year.
