Why would anyone hate what Steve Hackett is performing, especially old 'Genesis' music. His shows are spectacular ! He is also one of the nicest 'superstars' you could ever meet.

Happy to explain. Steve says 'the band become more competitive that collaborative ... and I had a hit song'. Result? Within a short time Steve put out an album, which is said did well, and thereafter started playing Genesis songs. Well that's one version. Another is that it's easier and more profitable to be a 'credentialized Genesis cover band' than be a 'slave' to the Genesis machine. I think he should've stayed with Genesis and did his solo stuff ... it's NOT like Jagger/Sting/Townshend/Gabriel/McCartney/Harrison making the band mad by doing solo stuff while still in the band.

Punpking King And I heard someone say he was the only member that was a true fan, of Genesis music the first six/seven albums are comparable and are part of the greatest music that was ever produced in any genre this music will never age and will be played forever! whenever I hear a Genesis song from this period I just cannot get it out of my head, it is totally infectious!

I couldn't agree more. I now live in australia an bought VIP tickets for selling england/spectral mornings before the kung flu came around. The tour was postponed but i retained the tickets (hopefully this year). The fact of the matter is the current genesis line up isn't giving the fans of the classic prog era what they want and haven't done for over 35 yrs. 15 minute medleys during a 2 hour gig is disapointing. I often wonder how much revenue Steve made in royalties for Banks, Collins, Rutherford and Gabriel in record sales due to the regeneration in interest with steve's revisted albums and concerts driving the genesis train while the rest of them sat on there arses not doing anything remotely related genesis

The old Genesis material has the quality of classical music. No one objects to Mozart Revisited or Beethoven Revisited. Those who "hate" on these concerts are free to go create their own music of same or superior quality. Once they've succeeded, they'll probably want to play it more than once.

I can only hope Steve appreciates how much people like me love hearing and seeing him perform those old songs. Having bought the "Live Selling England by the Pound/Spectral Mornings" DVD, I can honestly say that Steve certainly keeps the old music alive and fresh. The musicians he surrounds himself with bring a unique energy to the old classics, and I must say that even his newer solo stuff is performed very well, and his sister-in-law Amanda is a great asset on guitar and vocals as well. I'm a fan of Nad Sylvan's(featured vocalist) but I can imagine he might be a bit of a handful, seeing as how he's quite the diva.

@@lornestein7248 Except it's not a cover band in the way that The Musical Box and Genetics are. I've seen Genesis once - it was back in 1987 in Glasgow, as part of their Invisible Touch tour. Just 3 songs from the 1970s were performed and they even did a sacrilegious medley of PC's favourite 1960's pop songs as an encore. While I could appreciate the focus on the recent material, it still felt like a betrayal (in fairness, I believe the medley was later regretted). Since 2015, I've lived in Melbourne and in 2017, Steve Hackett and is band performed as part of his Genesis Revisited tour. As far as I know, Genesis never toured Australia, but the hall was jam packed. For the first time, I got to see Firth Of Fifth and Supper's Ready performed live. The audience went mad for it. As someone who got into Genesis in the 1980's, and missed out on their classic era, I would have to say how grateful I was. And there were many people there who were younger than myself and wouldn't even remember the early 80's Genesis let alone the 70's.

Steve Hackett isn't much different from other classic era musicians in that the audience mostly want to hear the familiar stuff. Steve Miller does Jet Airliner because the audience is slow to warm to the new stuff. Sure, you do an overview of your career but in two hours people mostly want the most popular stuff. I find it refreshing that he respects their opinion rather than be down on everything like Tony does.

Very Humble Classy English Gentleman who just happened to play Lead Guitar, Help Arrange The Music as well as Contribute Lyrically as a cohort or even a few by himself mostly within One of The Greatest Prog-Rock Bands Genesis Ever. His first Solo album Voyage of The Acolyte(1975 ) is his best imho and has guest appearances by Phil and Mike as well. Steve in my opinion is The only one who truly gets The Magic they (Genesis ) created from 1971-1977 while Steve was in The Group. Also, he alone understands The Fans from those early days and even later fans that adore that incredible run of masterpiece albums from 1971-1977(my favorite as well). Steve loves us Fans so much and of course we love him for keeping these masterpiece songs alive and fresh, as he correctly states. I wish Peter( whom I adore w/Genesis and Solo ) would understand that. Yet, he states that was then and he doesn’t want to go back there( Maybe the Costume theatrics have something to do with that since he gave most of them to The outstanding Musical Box cover Group ). Who knows. I know Peter did go, along with his kids to see The Musical Box once and told his kids,”That’s what daddy used to do”. He also had high praise for TMB, as did the rest of the group, with Steve and Phil even showing up to play a song with them. Phil does get unfair “sole” blame for the Pop direction later( He actually wanted to play the Entire Suppers Ready on later 80’s tours, but was shot down by Tony and Mike= Fact! ). They were Prog Dinosaurs and had to survive Punk, New Wave, etc, even though later Proggier songs appeared on their Pop Albums or B sides like Dukes Travels and End, Dodo Lurker, Home by The Sea 1&2, Domino, Driving The Last Spike, Fading Lights, Naminu, Submarine, etc. They still knew their roots, though not as well or caring as Steve though. Love how Steve says it’s ( our the fans ) Music. Such a Great Humble Bloke. Steve even pays homage to Maestro Tony Banks with Afterglow and One for The Vine, Two almost entire keyboard laden tracks, despite obvious disdain in body language from Tony toward Steve, ever since Steve rightfully departed since he wanted his songs to be heard. Tony and Steve played off each other masterfully despite this. Just listen to the Beautiful End of Ripples and Entangled from The Trick Album. Thank You 🙏😊 Steve for all you do for us fans and The Wonderful Group you’ve assembled over these last years with Some still there like Nad and Roger and others who have moved on like Gary, Nick, Lee, etc..... including all I’ve failed to mention. They are great, as I’ve seen them once here in Chicago, IL. No response necessary really to the few who DO NOT GET IT.

After watching all of the interviews that are available from each of the band members, reading all the liner notes, blogs and everything else I can find about that most awesome of all prog rock bands Genesis, it looks to me like the main problem and the reason they were unable to stay together was because Tony Banks was a dictatorial autocrat who thought he was the king of England (not to mention the king over the band Genesis) and all of its personnel. I think Peter was the other strongest willed member and he and Tony fought like cats and dogs because Tony wanted to control everything each band member did, including Peter and Peter was having none of that… One of the things that I thought was insane was that Tony would absolutely bristle if Peter came anywhere near any keyboards and Peter was even at that time a good keyboard player and now he's very good…I thought that was weird, oppressive, controlling and dick-like. I think Tony's autocratic and controlling ways also became too much for Steve Hackett, so he finally left as well. Even now when I listen to Tony talk about early Genesis, it's plain to me that he is or appears to still be angry, hurt, bitter, offended or mad, primarily at Peter after all these years… He also talks down the music that early Genesis made even though it is now recognized as some of the best prog music ever made. He really talks down the Lamb…Maybe he wanted all of the attention, himself?!?! Since he and Peter were old pre-Genesis mates, their early history may have something to do with it?? What do you guys think?

@L J Gittinger, III You're absolutely right, though I think he's realized what a dick he was then in more recent interviews. BTW, the Ripples end section was mostly played by Tony on synth when Steve left. Sounded awful.

I've been going to Hackett gigs since 1979 and the last two in September 2021 (Seconds Out) were the best he's played. His Revisited shows are more true to the roots of Genesis than the last Genesis tour. Long may he continue to stay in good health and keep up the Revisited tours.

Whether people like it or not, he's proud of all that work. Mike Rutherford finds it odd that Steve is doing the old stuff and thats fine too. Both are happy with what they are doing. An artist doing what they want to do is a rarity these days.

God bless Hackett and let those lost, cultureless souls, who don't like what he's doing go back to their radios to listen to their gangster rap and country pop!!! Classic, Classical Rock is still alive - thanks to him!

I have been going to see Steve since 1981. I love the fact that he's playing what I regard as the best Genesis songs. I would prefer him to play slightly more of his own stuff though because that's the music I grew up with and love

I have been a Steve Hackett fan since he left Genesis in 1977. I like Steve's entire catalog.I like whatever he plays. I prefer his solo stuff, but I will enjoy whatever wants to play. I have seen Steve in concert 30 times from 1981 through 2019.

Good on him! I never got to see Joy Division-Peter Hook does a great job. Missed out on Tull-Martin Barre is coming to town(I'll be in second row). These people were part of the creative process. Smaller venues. More reasonable ticket prices. Sounds like a win win to me.

I’m a real Genesis fan and I love ALL of it, from Peter’s prog to Phil’s pop and Steve’s orchestral rock remakes-5 decades of incredible music from everyone who has ever been a part of the band! The Phi, Mike, Tony lineup outlasted them all and even Peter said they did way better without him! Just because something isn’t your cup of tea or no longer the original of something you liked doesn’t mean it’s not good or not real

I’m old enough to remember The old concerts with the real Genesis that me and Steve Hackett Peter Gabriel Phil Collins Mike Rutherford in Tony Banks back in the early 70s they were the best Prog band and I consider Them still the best but when they changed and Gabriel left and Steve left they weren’t the same. Steve took about a quarter of what Genesis was with him when he left knee changed. Phil‘s voice was close to Peter Gabriel so that’s why they could continue on without people really noticing a drastic change in vocals. But with Steve’s concerts in the last 5 to 6 years he has revisited the real band Genesis at the top 40 band Genesis thanks Steve

Where exactly are these haters? I’ve never seen anyone complain. No one complains that the remaining three toss in a couple of minutes of the classic stuff that made Genesis. I’ve got tickets to see Steve in a couple of months. It’ll be my third tour and I can’t wait!

Steve's attitude. The audience are the owners in a sense - and why are artists dismissive of their vintage music? It's like dismissing their own audience.

This gifted man has the right to play anything Genesis recorded whilst he was with them, period. And hes right, the true owners nowadays are very definitely the audience in such cases of recreating such wonderful music. . The criticsm is just plain pointless bitching.

Steve Hackett has earned the right to play Genesis. If we enjoy it and so does he then he should. I'd like him to find out of Peter Gabriel would still enjoy performing Genesis with him. Now how great would that be?

You are so correct Dana and as you said at the end, if Gabriel even just did one song( more in his vocal range these days would be best probably, but who knows. ) with Steve’s Band, it would be beyond great 👍🏻😊

I am surprised to hear there are any detractors....the Hackett band versions of these classic Genesis tunes are more faithful and yet have more energy and power than any of the actual Genesis version over time..Listen to Supper's Ready at Royal Albert Hall or Los Endos at Hammersmith...i can't get over how good they sound and am grateful i get to hear these versions. I have listened to the Hackett Hammersmith Los Endos (and countless other versions) a gazillion times by now and have found there's no other version of Los Endos out there on youtube where the band playing the tune powers into Squonk like the Zeppelin tune they were trying to imitate (when they wrote it) ...i can't get over how good it sounds. Hackett is literally bringing Genesis quality music, on youtube and other media, that is extremely reverent to the original and with production qualities beyond what's available even from the band Genesis..so i don't care what anyone else thinks. genesis, the band, went out on a whimper with their live shows, playing songs i didn't really care for and barely grazing the past with Collins in a chair, singing octaves lower.. screw the people that think Hackett ought not to do this or that

Steve Hackett man, what a great guy. In the 80s I used to get some fraction of the campus to lie naked in the dark listening to Spectral Mornings while I was a college DJ. Then the station director would bust in and make me play Elvis Costello or some shit.
