What a shot from Lafleur at the end. So calm, looks so easy and simple for him.

I'd love to see today's goalies play with same padding as they do in this video. They can keep their masks, but everything else gets pared down to 1978 size. Yeah, you can say the techniques have improved, but you'd still see GAA go up markedly.

A different era. No plexiglass behind Montreal's bench, no room behind the nets, helmets were showing up bit by bit. The game was not as concise as it is now.... I could ramble on. Also this was about the time I took a bus from Rochester, NY to see a game. Good times.

One of the few games my father could get tickets to back at the old forum, attended a year and a half before this game. March 10, 1977 Colorado 1 Canadiens 7, sat in the whites.

Did you notice the spectators sitting at 3:30 at ice level with no plexigas, hands and elbows resting on the top of the dasher board? I forget that back in the day there was always an element that you could get nailed by an errant puck or a stick.

Was cool seeing the coaches for the Devils’ first two Cups playing together as teammates. The Rockies ownerships were so cheap that up until their final season in Colorado, the crest, shoulder logos, numbers and names were all screened onto the jerseys - nothing was sewn. And good lord was goaltending really bad back in the day. That position has VASTLY improved, especially once the 1990s rolled around.

I learned how to play goal in the 70's and one of the biggest things they told you then was to "stay down", meaning to stay in your crouch. The thought was that if you stood up as the shot was taken, it meant you were afraid of the puck. And at 0:40 you can see the goalie flinch upward as the slap shot is taken. It's deflected in, so it wouldn't have mattered, I'm just pointing it out.

@@samuelluria4744 Its definitely a big part. The other thing Lafleur didn't always get recognition for is his back checking. He was fast and unrelenting in back checking. A work horse, always gave 100% on offense and as well as on defense. That also shows up in plus minus stats. I met him once in a bar after he played in a golf tournament in a resort north of Montreal. It was shortly after he left the Habs, before the Rangers. Bought him a beer as my company group had an open bar and he was past last call. He was friendly, stood up from his chair, shook my hand, we exchanged a few words and I was happy to have met one of my childhood idols. I saw him again a few months later in Trois Rivieres where he was in a crowd signing autographs. I stood by to watch for a bit. He saw me and smiled. I think he remembered the free beer, heh heh.

Look at 11:50 … the goaltending was absolutely terrible , for the most part , in that ‘70’s era ( with exception of the greats ) … we ( yes , me too ) evolved to the point where we couldn’t keep up with the shooters anymore . We were “ lost “ on the ice . Unbalanced . …. Hence , the inception of the Quebec Style , which , in effect. Saved Goaltending !!! The position caught up to the shooters .
