I haven't trusted anything with the Shyamalan name on it for like 20 years. If it's good, that's a bonus. He's had a few movies that have worked for me since his heyday but I would call those the exceptions and not the rule. And I don't see any reason why his daughter would break that mold. In the world of 'nepo babies', directors rearing their kids to be directors tend to have a LOT of their style transferred. You tend to get very competent directors who do a lot of what their parents did. For better and worse.

I also think there's an issue that's present in many horrormovies, which is that characters act in ways that are not logical or rational. One of the few that do not have this issue was movie called "Barbarian", I was pleasantly surprised watching it because when I screamed "do that/do this"the character eould actually do exactly what I would've done. People think characters need to be stupid to make things instresting but it only makes the movie frustrating.

I read the book recently and I’m blown away by the fact that one could look at that source material and so obviously fumble it! The book isn’t trying to trick you, or “get you” with twists, it is all about the tension and emotional bonds between the characters (mostly portrayed through their internal exposition). From reducing Mina and all rest of the cast to shells of who they are in the novel for the sole purpose of fitting into an edgy horror ideal, to not playing with the books biggest strength (survival horror), to deciding to attempt to make the movie deeper than it really had any business being. The movie is obsessed with aesthetic and mimicking (much like the Changlings) the appearance of other acclaimed horror movies that it fails to actually do anything well with the source material. It’s truly a missed opportunity and I recommend that anyone who felt let down by this kind of skeletal/bare bones premise, check out the book!

To anyone perusing these comments as I have been, mine will contain some spoilers! I relate to many of your sentiments. I saw it last night and honestly found it to be a fairly dreadful experience. I thought it was shot pretty well and can get behind your note about the lighting and such, but I couldn't agree more that the writing was just overall pretty weak. I also found its editing to be far too quick and choppy throughout most of the runtime. One of my biggest "what the heck" moments was when one of the stated rules was "never turn you back to the mirror" and then literally every character turned their back to the mirror on innumerable occasions and just nothing ever happened because of it haha. I agree that Ishana has some talent and certainly seems capable of something better than this, and it's clear that a lot of people worked hard on this project so I'll always commend films for that! I could nitpick this movie for the rest of my life so I'll probably just stop here. I've become a big fan of this channel over the past few weeks and enjoy all of your videos even when our opinions do not align! Keep it up and looking forward to the next one

My issue with M Night, and now his daughter…they grab these short stories and pretend it’s their work. Or maybe it’s the media and audience that goes “front he mind of”. This and “Old” are both pre written short stories or lore or poems etc, and all they have to do is make it fit for the theater….but they failed. Also also, M Night will never learn his lesson because he has been using his own money and has low budget films that typically do “well” or break even. So he doesn’t get a chance from studios, but he actually calls his own shot. Which is great, but his execution is typically the same. I do hope his new one “Trap” is much better, yes I’m part of the problem. I see his movies and now his daughter’s opening day hoping for an Unbreakable/Sixth Sense all over again.

I was disappointed by this too and really wanted to like it. I read the book last year after hearing about the film and liked, but didn’t love, it. It definitely has a solid premise and story that could have made for a good film. But the film left me disappointed. It wasn’t a bad film and it was wonderfully shot. But it was just okay for me. It was just whelming. So I have to give the typical “the book is better”, and I’d recommend it for anyone who likes the premise. There are some weird changes to the premise I felt were unneeded and better done in the book.

I was so stoked for this movie that i even bought the book it's based on as a warmup. I had the same experience with it as you seemed to have with the movie. It's paced in a similar way, but with two wildly different arcs, which was refreshing. But confusing, since it made a really short read feel so much longer than it was. It could have been twice as long, or divided into two books this way. May be just a personal reference, but nothing i was prepared for. And it suffered from the same "plot has multiple points when it could have ended". However. The dialogue was at a creepypasta level. Plot was incredibly predictable and the constant social commentary became tiresome real quick, it's not even subtle about it. The book had the cheesy plot-twist and the even cheesier 2015's style horror ending (no spoilers). Since the movie seemed to have a lot of similar traits i wonder if it's an amazing adaptation of the source material. Just the fact that the source material was not that good to begin with?

Just saw this today. One of the biggest problems i had other than the movie being pretty boring for most of the runtime was how quickly Mina just accepted everything as fact. Like she learns all this exposition about the watchers and is immediately just like “well shit i guess this is my life now”. Like yeah she starts trying to get out pretty quickly but why does she just immediately accept what she’s told as reality? Also ok a nitpick but how the hell did that building get built? Like they show it was the professor but how did he build and furnish ALL THAT without getting killed? And who is paying for the electricity?

*SPOILERS* So I normally love your reviews, but this is one where I have to disagree with you. I think a key part you are forgetting in your review is how it's stated the forest messes with your mind. They all start acting weird during winter because it got worse for them. Which leads Daniel to tying up Madeline's character because he doesn't trust her. Minas trauma point is revealed as a way of the Fae learning more about her. The whole "tell me something only X would know" scenario. And the fact of her being a twin, when the Fae mimic people is an interesting point in itself. (Also her copying accents and dressing up as others ties into the mimicking of Fae.) The Madeline twist isn't that she's a Fae, but that she's a hafling. A day walker. And it explains why she knew so much and was able to guide and protect. And she even explains her self she had trapped them to learn from them and teach the others. When it comes to the bunker I'm not sure how you saw that coming cause that twist was crazy. And really smart seeing it was made of steel and Fae can't touch steel so it was a true safe haven. And with them stopping in the forest for exposition it's shown by the sky that they clearly have more time especially with them being so close to the forest edge already. I don't know man, it just feels like we watched two separate movies. But this is points from someone who genuinely enjoyed it.
