I’m pleased you mentioned the difficulty in reading the finger numbers. I’m partially sighted and struggle with reading music unless it’s large and has high contrast. I’ll be giving this series a miss as it sounds like it has a lot of issues. Really enjoying your channel. Thank you.

So then what is the best method book to use? I'm most interested in jazz and then popular music. But it turns out that most of the really good jazz piano players had a very solid background in classical piano. Not all (maybe not Monk?) but so many - listen to Bill Evans; and now you have recordings of classical pieces by Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett (I'd be interested to know what classical music critics think of those recordings). In my 20s I had a teacher whose concept was that he was teaching improvisation not piano. It would have been really useful stuff, but only for somebody who already was classically trained, or did classical training simultaneously. In retrospect, I don't think it was good, at least for me, as a standalone approach, because there were gaps in technique, fingering, reading. Anyway, I'm happy to have a method book focused on learning classical music even though my goal is not to play that music. I can supplement that with other sources and my own listening. But which method book series - there are so many? If it matters, I'm likely to be doing this without a teacher.

As a piano teacher, I understand what you write. Really, your best option IS to get a suitable teacher and they will select or design content that suits. Seek a teacher who plays how you want to play and who also has much experience teaching along conventional lines. If I were teaching you from the beginning, I would probably use Hal Leonard adult books to teach the basic skills with a great deal of supplementary material that would include a systematic approach to developing technique, playing from chord charts, exploring improvisation and playing by ear (no one can truly improvise if they cannot play by ear!) and more. There is something about the tremendous attention to detail required in classical playing that makes it an indispensible part of learning if you want to truly become a virtuoso.

I guess this method would be just an extra. I wanted to learn classic anyway. I was thinking about an idea for a video like what is expected from a student for each grade. I know that grades and stuff vary from different exam boards but it would be nice to know some differences especially between beginners and intermediate players. Thank you!
