It's Not a higo ll, it's a Hizen. The higo ll has a pocket clip and no sheath. Thank you for sharing your wonderful collection!

66.8 Rockwell! Now that is exact. So this is specific for that knife, I'm assuming. I love that Desert Iron Wood. It is almost like the knife is a frame lock and the DIW are covers over the frame. I've seen this before on newer knives. Putting a clip over that handle would almost be sinful! You're looking at perfection in that knife. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I should have mentioned that they Rockwell each knife and put its number on its certificate. You can see the divot on the bead-blasted part of the blade. I might do a quick video on that. Yes, I see it as a frame lock with covers, rather than a liner lock… or, perhaps, a frame-lock done right? It’s one of the reasons why I’m not wild on clips, shields and so forth. This was the one from this group that I’d like to have been able to keep! And I should say, it was up against some serious competition!

@@slick_slicers Normally ZDP-189 is run at extremely high Rockwell hardness in the 64 to 68 range. According to Google, which your example is right in there. My Spyderco Endura & Delica are in ZDP-189 and I have no problems with chipping. I took the Delica edge down to 20°.

These are the kind of knives I can see costing more money than your run of the mill high end production knife. I love ZDP -189 & Desert 🏜 Ironwood. Very interesting & distinctive blade grind.
@gizmocarr3093 Жыл бұрын
When I see the shape of blades and grind it reminds me of a Scandi-grind. Rockstead calls it their Honzukuri blade shape. It is a precisely made convex edge. The center of the ground edge is 30-degrees and tapers to a second micro-edge of 24-degrees. If you sharpen them yourself, it will change the precision grind. The high mirror polish also contributes to the smooth cutting of the edge. Considering these are important reason the blade stays sharp so long, I would rather not do that to a knife the cost of a Rockstead. Because Rockstead will do it for the cost of shipping, free. To me, that is the same as taking a Ferrari to Walmart for an engine tune up. It is not a good idea if you think about it for second. This is something to consider if you pay the price for a knife of this quality. You are not only buying an expensive knife you are paying for a precision made knife no one makes as precise as Rockstead makes.🤔 😱🙂😅

A scandi has the same angle of grind culminating in a zero edge, with no final micro bevel. This is a convex grind with decreasing radius as it approaches the edge. This takes the bevel angle from 30° to 24° as a gradual change, not in any steps. It does however reach a zero edge with no separate terminal bevel. It’s often described as an Appleseed grind as, in section, it resembles an apple seed. Rockstead uses the term honzukuri, but rather inaccurately. It’s a term from the to-Ken vocabulary. To be honzukuri a blade should have a shinogi line, which to my reading, this has, but then it should also have a yokoti line defining a distinct kissagi I.e. what we might now, equally incorrectly, call a tanto! But, then again, the term honzukuri refers to swords, not knives! Fundamentally, the blade shape here is very much a modern interpretation of a classic tanto blade. It conforms in shape and section to many traditional tantos. There were always specialist stout, punted, armour piercing or recurved decapitating specials, but the ‘standard’ tanto looked much like this. You’re right, this does need to go home for sharpening, but preferably not too often! It’s not the cost that bothers me, but the risk of shipping it a full lap of the world, only to have it seized by UK customs on return!

The same thing would happen in the lock Picking world. We would make custom picks and send to eachother. Some would never use the pick, because it was so special. They didn't want it to break in use. No, the reason for making a custom pick was so it could be used, not put away, and possibly looked at once in awhile. You will never know if a knife is hype, or truth until you cut something. ⚔️

@@ianrosie4431 many modern knives, including the Keaiken, draw their influence from traditional tantos. Curiously though, most modern ‘tantos’ do not, rather taking their cues from the katana. It’s a funny old world!

@@slick_slicers I wonder when the changeover occurred. I might have to head off down the rabbit hole. EDIT: Spyderco called the new chisel tip they were introducing, a Tanto , "as a marketing gimmic" according to Walter Sorrells.

Why does the Higo II have a cutout the size of a dime inside the handle with a grove for your ring/pinky finger to catch on
@slick_slicers4 ай бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the relief for the lock bar? Some makers put this on the outside of the handle, but I much prefer when it is done this way. It is one of the things that I don’t like about a frame lock.
@MaxHarden4 ай бұрын
@@slick_slicers”Relief bar”, that’s what it is. I guess to make the frame flexible.

Have you experienced rust issues with the YXR7? especially at the edge/ cutting area.
@slick_slicers Жыл бұрын
No, I’ve had no issues. The DLC removes most of the threat, but you’re right, the edge is a risk. I don’t take any specific precautions, but I don’t live in an area with especially high humidity, not particularly corrosive factors, and when not in use, all my knives live in a cabinet strewn with silicone sachets. I also strop them fairly regularly, which cleans the edge. That’s the same for all my knives, not just the Rocksteads. I hope that helps.

@@slick_slicers Thanks, good info! I just got a YXR7 blade from Rockstead and was wondering how to maintain it, as it will be a user knife. Cheers!
