Why do so many judge Rocky Marciano unfairly? He only had 12 amateur bouts and didn't turn pro till 24 years of age. Using Ali as a comparison, he had 180 amateur fights and turned pro at 18. What Rocky accomplished is astonishing in my opinion.

He was not an honorable man. The same day he retired he abandoned his kids and wife, Barbara, to sleep with thousands and left them penniless.

Minimal boxing skills. These little guys were street fighters not boxers. Super Heavyweights Zhang Bakole Joshua Parker Kabayel Hrgovic Vitali Foreman Lennox Briggs Grant Peter Ibeabuchi would annihilate all these little light heavyweights within minutes. I had no idea how bad boxing skills were back in the day.

Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. 179lb light heavyweight Rocky's conditioning is another manufactured fallacy and 236lb Ibeabuchi vs. 226lb Tua proved it when they threw a record breaking 1,730 haymakers in only 12 rds. *When "The President" Nigerian Ike Ibeabuchi met "The Tuamanator" Samoan David Tua the Nigerian got out to an insanely fast start, throwing 91 punches in round one according to CompuBox, 91 again in round two, and 95 in round three, obscene numbers for a Heavyweight. By the final bell, Ibeabuchi and Tua had combined to throw 1,730 punches, breaking the Heavyweight record set by Ali vs. Frazier III, when they combined for 1,591 punches - in 14 rounds, two rounds more than Ibeabuchi and Tua had to work with. Ike threw 975 punches, the most ever by a single Heavyweight. Both fighters had a brawling fight style, they were both 24 years old at the time of this epic "tribal" battle and they were both undefeated going in to this fight. 226lb Tua's record stood at 27-0-0 23KO's while 236lb Ibeabuchi's record stood at 16-0-0 12KO's.* This fight is the stuff that dreams were made of. Two Super Heavyweight warriors stood toe to toe exhibiting exceptional heart and endurance. Both boxers threw bombs and neither took a backward step. After the fight Ibeabuchi complained of a headache and was taken to a hospital. He underwent several tests including an MRI scan but nothing abnormal was found and was immediately released. A week after the fight Tua had surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow. No heavyweight of his generation possessed more ability. He was a prodigy. He had amazing power. Unfortunately, here was a very scary man both in and out of the ring. And it’s unfortunate that we’ll never know what could have been. Bob Arum: "I don’t know, but it was the Heavyweight division and people love a puncher, and while he probably couldn’t have made what Mike Tyson made, but he would have been damn close. You know, hundreds of millions of dollars, sure. But again, again, that’s life, that’s life. You have to be a person, you have to be sane, you have to comport yourself with some kind of dignity and some kind of grace in order to realize that type of reward, and he couldn’t do it." 21 months later, 245lb Ibeabuchi confirmed that he was indeed the best up-and-coming heavyweight on the planet by knocking out undefeated 26-0 quick and slick southpaw Chris Byrd. Ibeabuchi was 20-0 with 15 knockouts, only 26 years old .. and he never fought again. Byrd: "I got a little arrogant, thinking I’m unhittable. Cause I just thought, Oh man, he can’t hit me! I’m gonna slip everything. And, boom, just got caught. When I got knocked down the first time, I got, literally, the canvas woke me up. I was asleep before I hit the ground, and when I hit the canvas it woke me up. I asked the referee why he stopped the fight? What are you doing? "The bell rung!" But my bell was still ringing, that’s what was ringing, was my bell." 245lb Ike Ibeabuchi would have been the heir to Lennox Lewis throne. The Klitschko's would have been gate keepers if he was around. Ike was a Super Heavyweight with serious power, great speed, chin of iron, a boxer and a brawler, freakish stamina, threw punches in bunches and had a ridiculous work-rate with KO written all over his punches. *179lb light heavyweight Rocky with 67" flyweight reach gets flattened by the 245lb prodigy Ibeabuchi 10 out of 10 times and that's not debatable!* The way Rocky fans go on and on about how he's the best conditioned fighter that ever lived is laughable. So Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, Manny Pacquiao, David Tua and Ike Ibeabuchi never trained? What a Joke.

Soft spoken Lennox Lewis at his best was the total package. When he fought seriously he was pretty much untouchable. The last undisputed Super Heavyweight champion emerged as cream of the crop against some of the biggest punchers in Heavyweight history. Lewis avenged his only two defeats by knockout. He didn't make excuses for his only two losses, he said, "It's Heavyweights, you can get caught, but i won the rematches in style," and "Show me a Heavyweight Champion without a loss and i'll show you a fighter that fought a lot of nobodies." In my opinion 58 year old Lennox Lewis is the GOAT. To hear him talk so clearly and eloquently after going up against 18 Heavyweight Champions is remarkable. *The 18 HW Champions Lewis faced: Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Hasim Rahman, Oliver McCall, Mike Weaver, Henry Akinwande, Tommy Morrison and Ray Mercer were later recognized as WBO champions, British HW champion Gary Mason, European HW champion Jean Chanet, Commonwealth HW champion Derek Williams, Canada HW champion Razor Ruddock, IBF/WBF HW champion Michael Grant, and WBC International HW champion David Tua...[[ technically not all were 'World' champions but champions nonetheless ]].* Other notable mentions; *Olympic HW Silver medalist Riddick Bowe, Olympic HW Gold medalist Tyrell Briggs, Andrew Golota, Zeljko Mavrovic, Frans Botha and Phil Jackson* How many prime topnotch genuine 200+lbs Heavyweight and 224+lbs Super Heavyweight Champions did light heavyweight Rocky fight? *""ZERO""* Imagine the little light heavyweight with 67" flyweight reach trying to fight topnotch Super Heavyweights with 80" to 86" albatross wingspans and 30 to 100+lbs weight advantages? Who KO'd Lennox Lewis? Hasim Rahman 6' 3" 240 lbs 82% KO's with 82" reach was a genuine Super Heavyweight, not a little 178 lb light heavyweight with 67" flyweight reach. Oliver McCall 6' 2" 240 lbs 82" reach was a genuine Super Heavyweight, not a little 178 lb light heavyweight with 67" flyweight reach. Little light heavyweight Rocky was simply too small. For Pete's sake his little opponent Matthews was a middleweight and little Rocky's two best opponents, Charles and Moore, were also little light heavyweights. For a so called "Heavyweight" division it don't get any worse than that.

Undefeated. Unbeatable. The greatest, ever. That was Rocky Marciano (1923-1969), the only Heavyweight in boxing history who ended his career with no defeats: 49 fights won, including 43 by knockout. Rocky bludgeoned every top Heavyweight of his era before leaving professional boxing in 1956.

Rocky was so strong. He hit a special heavy bag that weighed 800 lbs. He was special. Better than everyone else for sure. That's not all. Everyday he ran 30 miles and did 6000 sit-ups. He was head and shoulders above everyone else. My god he was special. One in a billion. Did i mention he was special.

Rocky's huge titanium fists were no different than two 18-wheeler Mack trucks. He wasn't called Rocky Mack for nothing. He was special. I get tears in my eyes just thinking about him. My god he was special.

Minimal boxing skills. Ali would annihilate him. Tyson would definitely crush him. He was a street fighter not a boxer. I had no idea how horrendous boxing skills were back in the day.

Rocky was also good for crime. It was noticed that whenever he was fighting there was significant reduction in crime on those nights. Basically the mob were all having parties and watching the marciano fight. It was understood between rival mobs that you just don't disrespect marciano by committing any crimes on his night. Plus everyone was just enjoying the occasions. This is documented by the FBI

@@seniordavidmanderson Probably yes. But Marciano was definately a freak of nature. His ability to take a punch, and how hard he hit at 185 lbs is amazing. For his time he was a great boxer. (The best) As far as Foreman, he couldnt do much vs. Ali. Marciano had huge heart, and endurance as well. Can never count him out.

By contrast, Marciano was just entering his prime. 40 year old cruiserweight Walcott had already been fighting *"22yrs"* with 68 fights before facing tiny cruiser Rocky. Walcott had an abysmal 44% KO's. *Walcott being granted (6) title attempts in a (5½) year span (1947-12-05 to 1953-05-15) proves how shallow the division was at that time. Fury would keep little Rocky at arm's length and force him back whenever he felt crowded. He'd jab, turn, and flummox him for as long as wanted, and if Fury felt so inclined, he'd walk him down Kronk style and grind out a stoppage. And none of this, "if he can't reach his head he'll go to the body", either. That's just bull****. Fury's lead would keep Marciano too far away as is. Rocky ain't gettin the opportunities to impose his work-rate and definitely doesn't hit hard enough to stop him. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 4 or 5 jabs a round and win the round. King Fury wins!!! Anyway he chooses!!! *Fury is a titan amongst mere mortals. Generations of dna forged to create the perfect Super Heavyweight boxer. I'm grateful to see him in my lifetime. No matter what I tried against him, it was me who had to revert back to boxing. Nobody made me box like Sonny Liston did and that happened every time we worked together. When Patterson finally agreed to defend the title against Liston, he was asked about Liston deserving a title shot, being an ex-con. Floyd poured praise on, saying every man deserves a second chance, etc. When his turn came, Sonny said: “I’d like to kill him and run him over with a car - when the fight starts , I’m gonna get what’s coming to me, and he’s gonna get what’s coming to him.” Sonny was a genuinely tough man, feared in real life, it was not some gimmick for the ring. In the 1950’s, in Jim Crow America, the police routinely treated Black men badly. Sonny Liston was a proud man, and he chafed at the way the police treated him - and was not afraid to show it. In one early incident, he made his disdain for the police clear while demonstrating his remarkable strength. Again Jonathan Eig relates in Ali: A Life about an incident where the police were harassing Sonny: “He started a fight with a cop, beat the cop senseless, snatched his gun, picked him up and dumped him in an alley," [Sonny] then walked away smiling, wearing the cop's hat." Sonny also once took a gun away from a police officer who was harassing him for allegedly driving too slow, beat the officer and broke his knee. On another occasion when he was again being harassed, an enraged Sonny took the officer picked him up over his head and hurled him into a trash dumpster. For that one, Sonny was sent to the City Work Farm and was locked up and out of boxing for nearly two years. Only the fact the police did not want their harassment of Liston publicized saved him from decades in Pennsylvania prisons. Hasan Jeffries, an Assistant Professor of history at Ohio State University, said that Liston, born during Jim Crow, in the deep South, was considered by the establishment as: “America’s worst nightmare” and a “literally dangerous Negro,” someone who was “unafraid of white people as demonstrated by his consistent encounters with police.” Liston never complained about prison, saying: “I had three meals every day for the first time in my life." The mean little prison bed, a thin pad on broken springs, was better than anything Sonny had known. That food Sonny would praise was so bad after he left the Penitentiary the inmates rioted over it, claiming it wasn’t fit for a dog to eat. Sonny told Boxing Illustrated in 1964 that his life before prison was a LOT worse than Prison, where he got fed 3 meals a day: “On the good days [growing up] I ate. On the bad ones I told my stomach to forget it." Sonny was so feared in prison hardened murderers gave him a wide berth. It was in prison that for the first time in Sonny’s life someone saw something special in him. A Catholic priest saw the fear with which other convicts treated Sonny, and thought he would make a great fighter, and it would keep him out of trouble. Father Stevens taught him to box, believing that boxing would take Sonny out of a world of bars and beatings and to the places he deserved to go. He was at least partially right. When Sonny was returned to prison for two years after breaking a policeman’s knee when he picked him up, after being harassed one time too many, Sonny said of going back: “So what? It ain’t that bad.” Fight City was asked to pick the most feared and intimidating boxers, and guess who was number one of all time?: “Sonny Liston.”

Hes my favorite now, before I liked boxers but the swarmer thing is so awesome. GOAT conditioning and he's one smart man, he figured out how to lay his power down with high avoidance, making them pay. Genius. If Tua & Tyson met Rockys regime, my guess is they could have got close to Rocky, but that's another 1 or 2%, maybe even 5%.

They claimed the reason they took the wallets was so they had the Englishmens' identification to enable them to make a complaint. Despite pleading his innocence, Marciano was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years hard labour but this was eventually reduced to 3 years - Marciano however only ended up serving 22 months. Murphy on the other hand was sentenced to 10 years. Marciano received a dishonorable discharge but was allowed to re-join the army for a fixed 12 month period in order to receive an honorable discharge. (( *Folks get into trouble all the time, nobody is perfect. But what stands out is Rocky's ability to go from Dishonorable discharge to Honorable discharge. I've served in the Marines, and in all my years I've never heard of that happening before. It's not possible unless the fix was in. He already knew the weather in Des Moines was bad before he left Chicago. Marciano boarded a small Cessna 172 with pilot Glenn Belz, and Frank Farrell, the son of Louis Thomas Fratto, born Luigi Tommaso Giuseppe Fratto, also known as "Lew Farrell" and "Cock-eyed", an American labor racketeer and organized crime figure in Chicago, Illinois, and Des Moines, Iowa, from the 1930s to his death in 1967. A massive storm system challenged Belz's relative inexperience (231 hours of total flight time) as the plane flew west from Chicago over Iowa. Trying to land at a small airfield outside Newton, Belz crashed the plane into a tree about two miles short of the intended runway. On August 31, 1969, all aboard, including Marciano, died on impact.

Hall of Fame Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston was a muscular 6′ 1″ powerhouse weighing 220 lbs of pure brick. He had iron in either fist and could put an opponent on the mat quickly with either. Sonny was the most ducked fighter of all time. Even Joe Frazier’s team refused to fight him. Liston in his prime was the real deal. He was a great fighter.

Most great boxers have a life filled with turmoil and highly questionable decisions outside the ring. Anyone who doesn't know that doesn't know boxing. The boxing world has always had a significant amount of syndicate run criminal activity, behind the scenes. All a boxer can do is best whoever the fighter is in front of him. Rocky Marciano did that in an undefeated fashion. You can carry on about all this you've commented on, but you can't deny his record. You sound like a hater who's crying that someone who fought in a blood sport wasn't civilized enough for you.

Even if little white Marciano could have fought a prime Moore and a prime Charles he'd still be fightin light heavyweights who were both knocked out by middleweights Marshall and Booker. And even you wanna pretend they were in their primes the point is little white Marciano still struggled with light heavyweights. One would think since little white Marciano was only 185 that he would at least have faster hands than the true Heavyweights right? But Maricano had the slowest hands I've ever seen on a white boy. little white Marciano could train 1000 years but prime Ali would still crush him. Since Marciano struggled with light heavyweight Charles who was a good boxer, but was smaller weaker and slower than Ali, what makes you think he'd do better against Ali? Could you imagine 41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore busting up King Fury and Big George Foreman or any of the great Super Heavyweights? Puncher of The Century Earnie Shavers is known for being the hardest puncher in Heavyweight boxing history. He scored 69 knockout wins, including 23 in the first round. So powerful, both Joe Frazier and George Foreman told boxing writer Jerry Eisenberg they would never fight Shavers. Real fighters knew enough to avoid him. His incredible one punch power made him more than dangerous. George Foreman told him personally when Earnie lobbied for a fight, "hell no." Joe Frazier told Shavers bluntly when Shavers asked him for a shot, "No way, Earnie.” Hall of Fame and all time greats Ali and Holmes both said Shavers power, especially his one punch power, was simply unrivaled. But they, and others, also said a lot more.. Angelo Dundee, the great trainer, said "Earnie wasn't really a good boxer, but God, his power was amazing." Muhammad Ali said after his match with Shavers, "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa" And when fighters had to meet him, they left in awe. Tex Cobb said "Earnie could punch you in the neck with his right hand and break your ankle." He also said, "if a man hit any harder than Earnie I'd shoot him." Warner, a roided out ex-wrestler with no boxing experience, knocks Corrigan before gasing out. An absolute legend. A complete Roman Gladiator. And easily the greatest of all time. The man could go 40 rounds. As the fight went on and everyone got more tired, he got more energy. Hardest puncher and insanely high accuracy rate. And the man could take anything you threw at him right on the chin as if it didn’t even happen. The man was a machine.

​@charlesosbun9381 He was drafted and served loyally although he wasn't allowed to be on the front lines due to America possibly losing their new caramel sweetheart and thus patriotic morale. He still however boxed in the military and gave most of his fight purses and military checks and benefits as he was a naive philanthropist probably due to growing up with 8+ siblings. The irs however still somehow taxed him into crippling poverty. He would fight in his old age causing irreparable damage to his health trying to pay his "taxes".

Powell July 1944 - Gloucestershire, England Private Rocco Marchegiano poses for a mugshot after his arrest for felony assault and robbery, while serving in the US Army during World War 2. Marciano, along with another solider named James Murphy had been accused of robbing two Englishmen and assaulting them. When questioned, Marciano and Murphy claimed to have no knowledge of the incident but after the victims' items were found in their possession they were forced to change their story, stating the two Englishmen had made sexual advances and they were forced to defend themselves. They claimed the reason they took the wallets was so they had the Englishmens' identification to enable them to make a complaint. Despite pleading his innocence, Marciano was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years hard labour but this was eventually reduced to 3 years - Marciano however only ended up serving 22 months. Murphy on the other hand was sentenced to 10 years. Marciano received a dishonorable discharge but was allowed to re-join the army for a fixed 12 month period in order to receive an honorable discharge. (( *Folks get into trouble all the time, nobody is perfect. But what stands out is Rocky's ability to go from Dishonorable discharge to Honorable discharge. I've served in the Marines, and in all my years I've never heard of that happening before. It's not possible unless the fix was in. Little Rocky was always mafioso, his loansharking business immediately after he quit boxing proves it. And it also explains his brilliantly managed and very well protected 49-0* ))

"Never seen stamina like Rocky had .. superhuman." Rocky ran 30 miles daily for 2920 (8yrs) days nonstop. Keep in mind a marathon is 26.2 miles. That's not all. In addition to his daily 30 mile runs he'd also include sprinted uphill backwards and shadowboxed under water for an additional 2 hours. Rocky was superhuman and will forever be my hero.

He never ran 30 miles a day, you are utterly wrong. You cannot train for a fight running that kind of distance. You would never recover nor have the time or energy to actually spar or work the bag.

He was my father's all-time favorite fighter. What a warrior! And from everything I've heard or read, he was a genuinely great guy too. The story was he never liked being a fighter. He didn't enjoy beating up on people. But yet he did it so well! Rest in peace champ! You were one tough old dude!

By way of comparison no°1 p4p Naoya Inoue has 67½″ reach, longer than light heavyweight Rocky's 67" reach. Inoue is 5' 5", Rocky 5' 9". Rocky fans continuously try to debate me. What's there to debate? How to magically make Rocky bigger? History cannot be changed, Charles Moore Matthews Marciano were light heavyweights, the overwhelming majority of that division was middleweights and light heavyweights moonlighting and/or masquerading as Heavyweights. It does not matter if Rocky's walking around weight was 210, bcz his average weight throughout his entire boxing career was only 178 to 186. He was light heavyweight period. I'd bet the farm on bantamweight Inoue to KO little Rocky in the 14th or 15th round.

Well Rocky's brother, Peter, said, *"His punches were measured by a professor at Harvard and there's a writing on it, and this professor gauged the strength of his punching blow to like X amount of pounds, it's almost like a small automobile hitting you."* --@ 42:01 Rocky Marciano: A Life Story | Full Movie | Marino Amoruso Where is Harvard university? Only 27 miles away from Brockton, Rocky's hometown. Where was the teachers hometown? Brockton? Was he Italian? What does gauge mean? Cambridge dictionary says, "to make a judgement." So there it is. A deceptive distorted erroneous misleading and untruthful story about our military building a machine to test little Rocky's power. And all along it was a hometown teacher writing a story about his hometown hero. *You have to respect every competitor for stepped into the ring but after studying all of his opponents my gut instinct also says Rocky is one of the biggest frauds in boxing history.*

Rockys death was a terrible thing for boxing. His commentary on fights was second to none and he was getting into training fighters. He would have been 60 in the 80s when Mike Tyson was coming through. I believe Mike would have listened to Rocky the same way he listened to Cus. Rocky could have got him to achieve his potential and keep himself on top. Rocky was great friends with Cus. I have no doubt they would have got him on board with this new talented front foot heavyweight. Marciano could have thought Mike every trick in the book when it comes to inside fighting.

When *"The President" Nigerian Ike Ibeabuchi met "The Tuamanator" Samoan David Tua the Nigerian got out to an insanely fast start, throwing 91 punches in round one according to CompuBox, 91 again in round two, and 95 in round three, obscene numbers for a Heavyweight. By the final bell, Ibeabuchi and Tua had combined to throw 1,730 punches, breaking the Heavyweight record set by Ali vs. Frazier III, when they combined for 1,591 punches - in 14 rounds, two rounds more than Ibeabuchi and Tua had to work with. Ike threw 975 punches, the most ever by a single Heavyweight. Both fighters had a brawling fight style, they were both 24 years old at the time of this epic "tribal" battle and they were both undefeated going in to this fight. 226lb Tua's record stood at 27-0-0 23KO's while 236lb Ibeabuchi's record stood at 16-0-0 12KO's.* This fight is the stuff that dreams were made of. Two Super Heavyweight warriors stood toe to toe exhibiting exceptional heart and endurance. Both boxers threw bombs and neither took a backward step. Ibeabuchi was 20-0 with 15 knockouts, only 26 years old .. and he never fought again. Byrd: "I got a little arrogant, thinking I’m unhittable. Cause I just thought, Oh man, he can’t hit me! Ali fought both Foreman and Liston, and he said that when it came to George he just had to take the hits and wear big George down, in the case of Liston, he simply did not want to get hit at all. So for Ali it was certainly Sonny that hit harder. Foreman trained with Liston after the Olympics, preparing him for pro boxing. George said Sonny was the only man that had ever pushed him backwards with sheer strength alone. He also said that you were always really careful not to make Sonny mad! I think it is pretty safe to say that Sonny Liston hit harder than George Foreman.

The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission.

Tyson in his prime has never been seen before or since. A combination of incredible speed, skill, and flat out aggression. I recognized sheer mortal danger when i saw it. Dude was terrifying.

The decathlon is the ultimate test for speed/strength/endurance. The oldest any Olympic or World champion has ever been is 32 (Roman Sebrle). This would leave one to believe that after 32 athletes will have started to decline- if not earlier. Boxers are only measured against their opponents, and the best boxers Marciano fought were past their prime. Marciano quit at 31 for a reason. A fighter is in his prime when he has the maturity and experience to go along with undiminished reflexes. Once his reflexes start to slide he's past-prime, simple as that. When his reflexes are gone he's a shot fighter. I can't recall seeing a fighter older than his early thirties that still had his reflexes fully intact. Joe Louis' prime years were in 1937, 1938, 1939 when he was 23, 24, 25 years of age. Ali's best years were during his twenties. Mike Tyson's best years was in his early twenties. Yet for some unknown reason Rocky fans believe Walcott's and Moore's best years were in their forties. Marciano quit at 31 for a reason.

Soft spoken Lennox Lewis at his best was the total package. When he fought seriously he was pretty much untouchable. The last undisputed Super Heavyweight champion emerged as cream of the crop against some of the biggest punchers in Heavyweight history. Lewis avenged his only two defeats by knockout. Wladimir Klitschko was more active than any recent Heavyweight champion, and he fought in a record 29 Heavyweight championship matches. He defended his title against all comers in four countries on three continents. He made 5 successful title defenses in his first reign as champion and an astonishing 18 in his second reign, which covered 12 years. Wladimir is one of the greatest Super Heavyweights who ever lived. Unfortunately haters must hate and Wlad is known more for 3 losses - to Puritty in 98,, to Sanders in 03,, and to Brewster in 04 - than for any of his wins. BUT he re-established himself after the loss to Brewster and reeled off 22 consecutive victories before ending his career with back-to-back losses to Fury and Joshua, dealing him his first losses in 11 years at the age of 40. He retired with a 64-5 record, a 25-4 mark in Heavyweight title fights and 53 knockouts. He never ducked anyone, but was never fully appreciated. He was a brilliant athlete, a magnificently proportioned and conditioned giant of a man. He weighed 245 pounds, stood 6 feet 6 inches, with an 81-inch reach and a jab that may have been exceeded in Heavyweight history only by Holmes and Liston. He moved like a man much smaller, light on his feet and thanks to the tutelage of the late great Emanuel Steward, cut off the ring expertly. For all his greatness in the ring, though, what made Wlad special was his presence outside of it. He was a man of arts and letters, owner of a doctorate in sports science, a charitable man who tirelessly raised money for children and who fought for human rights around the world. In 2014, he famously stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his brother, leading anti-government protests in the Ukraine. He made the world a better place for many with his efforts, standing as a symbol of courage and defiance in the face of overwhelming political power. Today the Klitschko brothers proudly defend their country against Russia.

Thats not Rocky’s fault he could only fight available opposition. Who else was there? Like the late Bert Sugar said “Rocky was a rose in a garbage dump” The lack of quality opponents in his era is why some don’t place him higher up the ratings.

Big George lost to Jimmy young and an aging Ali. Younger George hammered Frazier but did you see Frazier? He just stood in range and was target practice for George. He moved through a romantic era of guys and dolls, hustlers and gamblers, crusty trainers and sleazy managers, glamorous celebrities and notorious mobsters. What I knew about the 184lb undefeated cruiserweight champion before I read the book Unbeaten was that he quit during his prime right before he would have had to fight the likes of Cleveland Williams, Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson and Cassius Clay to name a few. I did not know about his conduct during World War 2 that got him locked up in jail for two years. Brutally assaulting and robbing innocent folk. Nor did i realize that his list of opponents while he was champ were of dubious quality, boxers who were on the way down like Louis, Walcott was 39, light heavy Moore was in his 40's and light heavy Charles was had Lou Gehrig disease. For the last decade of his life Marciano wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters and loansharking. He hung around with Frank Sinatra and a number of "made guys." Marciano was not a good businessperson and was lousy with investing and saving money. He left his family penniless. Again his boxing record is offset by the low level of his opponents. He died relatively young in a plane crash due to his complete and utter disregard of intentionally flying during horrible weather conditions inorder to collect money.

All Time Great Hall of Fame Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston had not lost for 10 years before Ali, and didn’t lose again for 5 more. Sonny’s only loss before Ali was early in his career when Marty Marshall broke his jaw when Sonny was laughing at him. Liston fought on with a broken jaw, had it broken again in a second place, and yet only lost a split decision. He twice destroyed Marty in rematches.

Sports Illustrated writer Tex Maule wrote that Liston's shoulder injury was legitimate. He cited medical evidence: "A team of eight doctors inspected Liston's arm at St. Francis Hospital in Miami Beach and agreed that it was too badly damaged for Liston to continue fighting. The torn tendon had bled down into the mass of the biceps, swelling and numbing the arm." --Those findings were confirmed in a formal investigation immediately after the fight by Florida State Attorney Richard Gerstein, who also noted that there was little doubt that Liston went into the fight with a lame shoulder.

Rocky was so strong. He hit a special heavy bag that weighed 900 lbs. He was special. Better than everyone else for sure. That's not all. Everyday he ran 40 miles and did 8000 sit-ups. He was head and shoulders above everyone else. My god he was special. One in a billion. Did i mention he was special.

Ben Bentley, Rocky's press agent and friend, told me Rocky would normally run at least 5-6 miles a day year round, but when a fight was signed he'd increase the distance to 9-10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12-15 miles. On top of this, he liked to walk another 5-10 miles in the late afternoon or evening.

You shouldn't believe every myth you read on the internet. 8000 situps, with no rest in between and every rep lasting one second would take over 2h and 20m. Running 40 miles would take him at least 5 hours. Add the probable 2h of boxing training, it sums up to over a MINIMUM of 9hs of training. But it would probably take around 12 hrs. It's not only useless, but it's stupid and counterproductive. If you have to fight for 45 minutes, it's better to run 60 minutes as fast as possible instead of 5-6-7hrs at a mediocre pace. It's useless to spend 4 hours doing sit ups when you can add weight and do them for 15 minutes and get a stronger abs. Training hard and not smart is just stupid.

While stationed in England, Marciano and a fellow soldier named James Murphy robbed two Englishman, brutally beating them up in the process *--@ THE ROCK Sports Illustrated Vault Aug\23\1993.* They were court-martialed and convicted after which Marciano was sentenced to 7 years hard labour, Murphy 10 years, to be served in a British military prison. Marciano was released after 22 months and dishonorable discharged. When questioned, Marciano and Murphy claimed to have no knowledge of the incident but after the victims' items were found in their possession they were forced to change their story, stating the two Englishmen had made sexual advances and they were forced to defend themselves. They claimed the reason they took the wallets was so they had the Englishmens' identification to enable them to make a complaint. Despite pleading his innocence, Marciano was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years hard labour but this was eventually reduced to 3 years - Marciano however only ended up serving 22 months. Murphy on the other hand was sentenced to 10 years. Marciano received a dishonorable discharge but was allowed to re-join the army for a fixed 12 month period in order to receive an honorable discharge. (( *Folks get into trouble all the time, nobody is perfect. But what stands out is Rocky's ability to go from Dishonorable discharge to Honorable discharge. I've served in the Marines, and in all my years I've never heard of that happening before. It's not possible unless the fix was in. Little Rocky was always mafioso, his loansharking business immediately after he quit boxing proves it. And it also explains his brilliantly managed and very well protected 49-0* ))

Ring Magazine polled 40 boxing experts on who was the greatest Heavyweight of all-time in 1962. These are historians who were actually there when he reigned as champion and Marciano's highest ranking was 7th place. The overwhelming majority rated him lower like Nat Fleischer had him at # 10, Charley Rose and McCallum's survey of old-timers rated him at # 9. All these people were born in the late 1800s and passed away in the 1960s and 70s. Little 184lb Marciano is regarded by many as the greatest Heavyweight ever, best of the best. The question is how does he stack up with the Mount Rushmore of Heavyweights?? I don't see how his status remotely moves up with the multitude of great Heavyweights that came after him. All the professionals, trainers, managers, experts and historians who actually saw Rocky Marciano fight during the 50s and 60s thoroughly examined his career yet they barely ranked him top-10 Heavyweight, of all-time. *I trust Nat's opinion before y'all's gibberish casual diatribe.* Genius Nat Fleischer (1887-1972) was the founder, president, publisher and editor of The Ring, a monthly magazine devoted to boxing and professional wrestling. Fleischer is called Mr. Boxing, or in the cant of masters of ceremony, "Mr. Boxing, himself," an introduction uniting man and legend. Fleischer’s story in many ways is the story of boxing. His experience is unlike that of anyone else from boxing’s past and certainly no one will ever be able to make his claims in the future. In 1958 Fleischer wrote, “I have been on intimate terms with every heavyweight champion since James J. Corbett. I have seen almost every heavyweight championship bout in the past half century, and most of those in other divisions that reach across a stretch of many exciting years.” Fleischer in fact saw every heavyweight champion from Jim Jeffries and Jack Johnson to Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier from ringside, most of those from the first row. Possibly no one else in history can make that claim. Fleischer’s unique perspective demands respect from those who are interested in the history of boxing. Nat tended to just report the fights as he saw it from ringside and did not editorialize too much. Nat was well known for his ability to break down and describe the styles of fighters and the action that took place in the ring. Here are some descriptions of fighters there is film on so we can compare what Nat said of them to what we know from the films. We can then know that what he said about fighters whom we have little film on is also accurate. Of Joe Louis he penned, in the April 1939 Ring, “He sails in, crashes his blows to the body and head, gives the opposition little chance to get set for a counter-attack and wards off blows with the cleverness of a Jack Johnson. Only Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey compare to Joe Louis of today in all around ability...No human body can take the punishment that Jolting Joe dishes out once he goes after his prey. That has been proved conclusively in his last few contests.” In the Mar. 1942 Ring, after Louis' destruction of the 6'6" 250 pound Buddy Baer, Nat Said that “Not even in the second fight with Max Schmeling did the Detroit Destroyer show as much as he did against Buddy. Joe had everything. He was magnificent. He was a whirlwind on attack, a master of defense, a terror with his devastating punches.” In evaluating Rocky Marciano he wrote December 1955 Ring, “Those who believe that he lacks the necessary qualifications for gaining a niche in the fistic hall of fame as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time won’t argue that as a puncher, he takes his place alongside such greats as Jeffries, Louis and Dempsey. They limit his qualifications for greatness to the category of “hitting power”, strength and durability all of which Rocky possesses to a high degree but which are *insufficient to gain for him a place among the greats of the past.”* “Despite his crudeness, he can move about the ring at a pretty fast gate and can toss more punches than any heavyweight of recent years. But misses more frequently than any champion I’ve ever seen.” *“He has faced very few real punchers during his career.* The two best, Walcott and Moore- both thirty-eight at the time-had Rocky on the canvas. *Joe Louis is not included* since when he met Rocky, the Brown Bomber had long since lost his once devastating punch.” Besides putting out the highly regarded Ring-Fleischer has published Nat Fleischer's Ring Record Book and Boxing Encyclopedia.The Ring Record Book is the most comprehensive of all annual reference sources on boxing. Mainly in the interests of boxing, Fleischer has made 37 trips to Europe and has gone around the world six times, furiously writing all the while. He has 20 passports. Discounting entertainers, Fleischer is the most widely known U.S. private citizen abroad. He is enshrined in the Helms Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. Fleischer has refereed and judged more than 1,000 fights. All told, Fleischer has published 57 books of history, biography and instruction on boxing. Fleischer has a 268,800-word "bibliography" of boxing. Counting his articles for The Ring and serials and pieces he dashes off in an hour or so for foreign publications, it has been estimated that Fleischer has written 40 million words in his lifetime.

Very well-thought-out and knowledgeable comment. I will agree with Fleischer about how often Marciano missed. But when he landed them...oof. I also don't think it's fair to disparage Marciano for his opponents' shortcomings. He fought who he fought and every fight was valid. Mike Tyson shouldn't have lost in several of his losses but he lost anyways, and Marciano could have lost just the same...been on an all night bender like Tyson and threw it away. But he didn't. And that's to his credit. He also beat Joe Louis. And one can say oh Joe Louis was old and blah blah blah...but that isn't Marciano's fault. Joe Louis does Joe Louis and Joe Louis signed up for the fight...and Marciano won. End of story. I don't care where Marciano is ranked, frankly. It might be fair that he is at #7 or #10 or whatever. But it's like when someone asks me my favorite movie, I have a really hard time putting one ahead of another, and only do it bc it feels like there had to be a linear ranking. But the truth is the top 25 of them could be scrambled into any position 1-25 and it would always be just as valid as the next shuffle. Marciano was a beast and he was undefeated. That's all there is to it. If some academic wants to knock him for anything I suggest they go and try to do what he did. WON'T HAPPEN.

Ring Magazine has Marciano at #4 now! "He could hit like hell...took a great punch...he was relentless and had a will of iron!" "When his character was tested...nobody was better!" "He never sought refuge in a clinch...it must have been hell to fight him!" Bill Caplan has Rocky at #4. "Marciano was unmatched when it came to fitness" He carried "gigantic power" in both fists! Caplan has Tyson at #17...Why?..."He never walked thru the fire to win a fight...he never came from behind to win a fight...he never got up after being knocked down...and came back to win the fight!" Lack of heart maybe? Marciano was the toughest SOB to ever set foot in the ring! He was mentally tough...unlike Tyson and Liston! Marciano had a ton of heart...unlike most so called fighters!

Liston was the most powerful intimidating Heavyweight ever. He never gets enough credit bcz of the two Ali fights which were dubious to say the least. Ali was seen as the bright new future, and Sonny was forced to step aside, and then found dead in really suspicious circumstances when he might "talk" about the deceit. His life story is better than any fiction novel, he deserves more respect than he gets. Before the first Clay fight Joe Louis told Sonny that he was going to bet on him. *"Joe, save your money,"* Sonny said....Now , that's something to think about. It's in Liston's biography.

listons first fight with ali was extremely dubious the second put simply was a fix , liston clearly took a dive. Even after the 2nd ali fight top heavyweights continued to avoid sonny liston.

Marciano had the shortest reach of any major heavyweight, and it meant that he would inevitably take a lot of punishment no matter who his opponent was. But he possessed tremendous power, had a titanium chin and was relentless through 15 rounds. Incredible.

I spoke with Archie Moore in 1991 (He was in a clinic in San Diego where I was working). He said fighting Marciano was like fighting a bull with gloves.

While home on leave in my dress white (USN) I entered a restaurant in Ft Lauderdale and went over to meet Rocky. I was also from Brockton and when I shook his hand it was like putting my hand in a catchers mitt. He was seated with Spanky McFarland and Huntz Hall. Absolutely a great night for a 22 year old sailor.

Absolutelyyyy Rocky had heart. Just as Joe Frazier was all heart. But look what Big George did to Frazier's heart, bounced it up and down off the canvas like a basket🏀ball. Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. According to Marciano himself, Muhammad Ali would have won. Rocky said three boxers in his lifetime were a bridge too far for him, a young Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, and Ali. Louis for hand speed and power, Ali for pure speed, and Liston for technical excellence and pure brute strength. --by Mike Stanton and Fight City Rocky Marciano said of Liston: “He isn't faking his toughness, and his strength is just something you got to see, and that jab, he can knock a man out with the jab!" So humble, and so respectful to his opponents, this guy was a true great in and out of the Ring,...he simply outfought and outlasted everyone who stepped into the ring with him ,...his great durability, power , toughness and iron will to win at all costs, made him such a formidable opponent, one that saw him retire as an unbeaten champ with a 49-0 record, (43 kos)....a true warrior of the Ring
