Defensive highlights of the legendary former undisputed Heavyweight world champion.
TikTok: / hanzagod_1
Rocky Marciano - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1947 to 1955, and held the world heavyweight title from 1952 to 1956. He is the only heavyweight champion to have finished his career undefeated. His six title defenses were against Jersey Joe Walcott (from whom he had taken the title), Roland La Starza, Ezzard Charles (twice), Don Cockell and Archie Moore. Known for his relentless fighting style, formidable punching power, stamina, and exceptionally durable chin, Marciano is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.

One of the greatest Heavyweights of all time! While Rocky Marciano is remembered for his all out swarming aggressive style, his skill set often tends to get overlooked and underrated so that's what I wanted to showcase here. The Brockton Blockbuster at his best 49-0! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

Any chance you can do a defense highlight of Roman Gonzalez? He’s another fighter that’s known for an aggressive swarming style but his subtle defense gets overlooked and underrated, especially after his 2 losses to Sor Rungvisai. Chocolatito’s defensive skills is both underrated and brilliant.

One thing that always stands out about Rocky in his films that I never see mentioned is how he could take the jab away from his opponents. Walcott, Louis, Moore, Charles all had phenomenal jabs and Marciano was able to take them away and force them into his fight. You see guys today supposed world champions and finesse boxers get hit with the same jabs repeatedly but here’s Marciano slipping inside, outside, bobbing, weaving and parrying jabs all night

The most overlooked capabilities of the Brockton Blockbuster are his defensive skills. He went 49 and 0 for two reasons; his severe power and his deceptive defensive skills. I can see how much would overlook this though considering he pretty much is known for his knockouts and savage nonstop onslaughts.

Rocky was terrifying because his defense and offense were the exact same thing. Every one of his defensive rolls and lean-backs were just loading up counter-punches like a damn cobra about to strike, in any direction and with either hand! Even his big missed haymakers that critics attack him for, were actually just sneaky counters because he let his punch momentum carry him into a side crouch where he could load up with the opposite hand and keep punching. You can see him doing it perfectly at 2:26 with the left-right combination.

Archie Moore thought that Rocky Marciano would be vulnerable to a left hook, but he was surprised when he realized in order for him to hit him with the left hook, he himself would have to be vulnerable to Rocky's offense. I'll explain this. Charley Goldman wanted to make Rocky's short stature an advantage, so he taught him to fight out of a crouch. If you notice when Rocky is hitting the heavy bag, he actually dips underneath. He's making that look easy, but I assure you, it isn't. Even for a short fighter. When Rocky is in a crouch it's natural for the back to bend with the knees so he's kind of "laying" on his right side. When doing that, you're most open to a right hand, but Rocky would put his right hand over his chin to blunt the effect of a right hand. It's not an ideal position for an opponent to land a left hook because he has to go behind the lead glove and reach down to hit him even though that side of his face is exposed. Rocky used this as a bait. If you notice, he will often come back and counter with his right if given that opportunity. It's subtle, but for a guy who was not fleet footed, it was quite effective. Even if one were to land a left hook, it would be tough to land it flush. Montell Griffin who was extraordinarily short for a light heavyweight used to use this effectively. Dwight Qawi to a degree too. If you notice how Jones knocked Griffin out in the second fight, he used a sort of leaping left hook that got around the guard as Montell leaned back in reaction. Actually, it may have benefited Montell to step forward as Jones threw the punch in anticipation of the movement and could even change trajectory while throwing. Most fighters don't have the athletic ability to generate power and keep themselves guarded while doing something like that, but in his prime, Roy was able to break a lot of rules due to his athletic prowess. Qawi had a tremendous jab that he'd use to cut distance and then get close enough to smother a powerful left hook and dip under.

Marciano used his natural assets to the best of his ability. His punching power, stamina and determination/heart are well known quality's, his style may have been crude to some and his defence wasn't exactly flashy, but it was effective for him and watching this video demonstrates that to perfect extent...another great highlight👍

Rocky Marciano was a legendary genius....a powerful boxer who could fight both outside and inside..his defense was fantastic..can withstand blows, parry jabs, pressure fight by being up close to an opponent to a clinch, weighing down and tired an opponent until the opponent got tired out and got knocked out clean... Henry Armstrong, and Joe Frazier also had that style comparison to Rocky Marciano..both Joe Frazier and Henry Armstrong were geniuses...the man that trained Rocky was a legendary genius and a boxer himself Charley Goldman.

@@prank_name3126 There was a channel that colorized all sorts if old black and white fights, but I can't find it or his videos now and he's changed his channel's name so many times. That channel had all sorts of fights Rocky analyzed. But Rock's narrated a lot or most of his fights after to explain what he's thinking during, and he has analyzed a ton of other fights before he died too. I know he did some Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles fights, but he did the lighter weights too. He was very keen on what Pure Boxers and different styles of fighters needed to do differently to win or get out of trouble. Wasn't biased towards sluggers and punchers.

The way he would smother his opponents punches, and his subtle slips were very high level. His footwork might look awkward when compared to more flashy boxers, but Marciano's footwork was elite, and he was always balanced with a good base. He was like a snake in the way he would get so low to the ground while moving his head constantly, and once he saw an opening, he would explode with all of his body weight into a brutal punch to the head or body. Marciano's head was also always off the center line, usually leaning away from the opponents right hand. It's very similar to Joe Frazier, but the difference between Joe, and Rocky was that Joe liked to bend at the waist whereas Rocky used his knees to get low in more of a traditional bob and weave. It's like a hybrid style between Frazier, and Tyson, only Marciano did it long before those guys came along in the fight game. Even when Marciano did take big shots to the head, he usually would roll with them to reduce the impact, and even when that failed, he had one of the greatest chins in boxing history.

You know, I've watched all of his available fights and somehow always missed out on how savvy he was defensively, especially considering how late he got started. His bob and weave were excellent, and that rolling backwards let him generate insane momentum for his counters. Like with Tyson, you can't be an undersized heavyweight and not have good head movement. Otherwise your opponent devours you with the jab as you're working your way inside.

just like Monzon, just like Benavidez, Marciano's defense and footwork were belittled but it's hard to knock the defense and footwork of fighters who just don't lose even if it isn't conventional. Similarly, how can you attack the defense and footwork of fighters who are next to impossible to knock down and who have never been knocked out? I posit that just because a fighter's footwork and defensive skills are not stunning like Ali, Pep, Mayweather, Loma, doesn't necessarily mean they can't be equally as effective a la Marciano, Monzon, Benavidez. Another great video.

Great side to side fighter that can slip punches because of he was very tall. Then after slipping punches he was the best at counter punching with POWER.The greatest trained fighter that other greats copied his style.

Interesting to think that if he boxed today he would be fighting at Cruiserweight because he was about 188lbs…one could only imagine that he would still do a lot of damage against the cruiserweight fighters of today and will be able to become champion. No disrespect to fighters like Makabu and Opetaia….but I don’t see them being Rocky Marciano!!

Absolutely. This video wasn't made with the intention of calling Marciano some sort of defensive genius but he had much better technique than a lot people give him credit for. He was crude but it worked for him.

What u and other casuals forget to mention is that he started training at 23 pro at almost 25. That's a pretty big ass detail. What use is being the younger man without some experience. Also it's very pointless to compare a heavyweight from over 70 years ago to a modern because of the massive size difference
