Marciano was one of a kind. He trained for 6 to 8 months for fights, sometimes slept in the gym, and as this video shows, part of his training incorporated hitting a heavy bag which is 100lbs heavier than normal. Amazing puncher. People can talk all they want about lack of fancy footwork or a having a jab as a main weapon, because this guy proved that if you have a solid chin, are willing to work hard to develop conditioning, are fearless willing to keep moving forward and applying pressure, and you have insane power in both fists, then that combination can take a person to victory over far more skilled boxers.

Charlie Goldman said he tried multiple times to make Rocky tire during training and every attempt to do so was met with a smile and refusal to rest or take a break. He said Rocky was the ONLY fighter he ever saw that loved to train. I think it's one of the top 4 reasons for his success. The foundation of his structure if you will. He never let his personal life or marriage distract his focus (hats off to his wife for understanding), he knew he had to be relentless for every sec of every round. Last but not least "Know Thyself".

@azathothfortescue6117
@azathothfortescue6117 5 жыл бұрын
Will Lewis There’s something more than technique on display here though; the culmination of almost a centuries worth of boxing tactics and strategy which was carved into Rocky’s flesh and spirit by Charley Goldman. Notice in those brief sparring clips; how rocky immediately digs to the body to establish control on his weaving opponent. His positioning was strange to the eye; designed to draw right hands and left hooks which left his opponent open to his devastating Susie Q or counter hook. He intentionally exaggerated his lack of coordination to allow him to take advantage of sudden bursts of acceleration, confusing his opponents. His crouch was almost curved inwards; his chin was always tucked as a result. Combine that with his large delts, certain exaggerations of technique and hitting him clean was awfully hard. Making his previously discussed baits more effective as they were often the only clean openings for a power shot he would give. Crazy to imagine someone else using the same “technique” strategy or tactics; I really believe his style was custom made from the ground up by Goldman. Like the fundamentals are present; but the way they’ve been applied and tweaked is insane!
@azathothfortescue6117
@azathothfortescue6117 5 жыл бұрын
studentofsweetscience I guess I am getting a little carried away but I’m not saying he was a genius more like a science project xD Like I seriously don’t believe he would have developed that style on his own; Goldman took a guy who could become a champion based on his endurance and power (obviously in the right) and slowly but surely made him into a cooked abomination of boxing science. If you look into Goldmans training philosophy he advocated for creating a style tailored to his fighters physical limitations, rather than teaching normal fundamentals he would build a style based around exaggerating any “negative” qualities a fighter might posses rather than attempting to develop properties he never had. I’ll admit this though; without Rocky Goldman wouldn’t have produced a heavyweight champion. But I can’t say that Rocky wouldn’t have become champion without Goldman, his intangibles were second to none and there were plenty of trainers at the time. He just would have been so different it’s impossible to imagine.

@@azathothfortescue6117 yep. Short man heavyweight with short reach but incredible stamina and power. Rocky’s training methods were far ahead of their time. He ran up to 10 miles a day, which was unusual in those days. The way he trained wasn’t much different than what we see in modern camps. Rocky’s power was seen as what took him to a world title, but his condition was just as big a factor. He could go full steam for 15 rounds. Even a really good boxer would have trouble dealing with a slugger who never gets tired.

They were very similar as far as coming in to a fight in the best possible condition and using consummate pressure to outwork you and great power to brake you down. Both are so underappreciated by those who don't know boxing, Marciano doesn't get credit for how great he was defensively and Hagler doesn't get credit for what a great boxer he was and how solid he was defensively.
