Don Cockell was considered a safe fighter for Marciano this was after the second fight with Ezzard Charles where Marciano's nose was split open they were testing the nose It also was a warm up fight for Nino Valdez but plans were changed after Archie Moore beat Valdez and Marciano's next victim would be Archie Moore but Moore put up a good fight briefly flooring Marciano a 4 count Rocky got up barely dazed if dazed at all and went to work on Moore who is a legend Moore normally a light heavyweight could also jump up to Heavyweight which he did on occasion because that's where the money was at Marciano never really bad mouthed his opponents it's called respect

jimi hendrix woops, Forgot about him. My bad. Worthy of note though, he fought him in 49 and 50 and wasn't champ until 53, and many analysts point out he was quite improved in his championship reign. But many greats had those fighters that, for whatever reason, wouldn't go down. You could pick out numerous no name fighters in the records of many greath champs who never should have stood up to one round but some how soldiered on to the end.

Marciano said after the fight that his head was not in the right place because a guy, who had been let into the dressing room area prior to the fight, had said that no one rated Don Cockell and Rocky was on a hiding to nothing because if he beat him then everyone would have said he only beat a second rate fighter and if Rocky didn't finish it easily then he would have been deemed a failure. Cockell put up a good show and showed how game and resilient he was as a fighter. Marciano was always fit and well prepared for his fights, was strong as an ox, could take a punch and had dynamite in both fists.

Ayer y hoy. Yesterday and today. Some scorned this victory of Marciano by how it looked Don Cockell, little worked physicist said, but British champion. Well Andy Ruiz did not look better and I do not think Anthony Joshua makes fun of the "chubby". Greetings from Argentina.

Rocky had his nose split open against former champ Ezzard Charles in Sept.1954. They were gonna stop the fight...and the doctor gave Marciano one more round! The Rock stormed out...KO'd Charles...and kept the title. He had plastic surgery to put his nose back together. The fight with UK champ Don Cockell was a test to see how the nose help up. The nose was fine...but Cockell took a brutal beating! As the fight went on...Cockell started to get sick because of Rocky's pounding! Unlike Liston...Cockell didn't QUIT. Give him credit for hanging in there!

Rocco Francis Marchegiano was a protected fighter. Entire eastern seaboard was Italian, it was all Italian. Rocky's manager Al Weill was 100% mafioso and matchmaker at Madison Square Garden, and that's exactly why LaStarza lost 1st fight. Even the commissioner of boxing was Italian. All fighters had to bow down to Rocky, especially the black fighters.

I'd like to see you pull off his bull charge. Acting like it isn't skill - who else but Rocky could avoid getting hit with his style as much as he did? He landed half easily.

@@donsimons9810 Perhaps you’ve never read my other posts on Marciano, where I refer to him as the greatest overachiever in boxing history. Or where I speak of his limitless courage and endurance and incredible conditioning. The fact remains that he MISSED THE MAJORITY OF THE PUNCHES HE THREW. Even against relatively stationary targets like Cockell and Savold, he swung and missed like a rusty gate. It’s because he was cursed with short arms and his physique basically demanded that, if we was to win, he’d have to plunge forward and make himself a target. I can’t imaging the courage needed to know you have to walk into the teeth of your opponent’s fire if you wanted to win. And yes, Marciano’s short stature and crouch made him a deceptively hard target to hit.

@@donsimons9810 So what you’re saying is, you haven’t seen Marcianos fights with Savold and Moore, where he misses 3/4 of his punches. I get it. You prefer to see Marciano as an infallible, perfect superman. What I am pointing out, thick head, is that despite his physical shortcomings and, yes, his clumsiness whether you want to admit it or not, he made them work for him.

@@carspiv the only clumsy thing in this discussion is you pretending you aren't a troll hating on Rocky cause you want your X 'black' boxer to be considered better. Go on and cherry pick whatever fights you think he was low% punches, like it even matters. That guy was dang near graceful considering his fighting style. Go watch the Ezzard Charles fights again - Rocky looked like he was dancing the most frightening dance you'd ever see. Grow up and admit Rocky is the champ above all your heroes, you fake lil poser

Back then 175+ lbs was considered heavyweight, even during Ali's era. Heavyweight finally changed to 200+ lbs in 1979. The several ATG fighters that Marciano did face were light heavyweights that simply moved up for the money because the division was completely void of any quality 200+ pound authentic Heavyweights let alone 224+ lb Super Heavyweights. Any heavyweight champion under 200 pounds should be permanently removed from all record books. Or an asterisk (*) placed before their name meaning *Cruiserweight. Eventually it's gonna happen, mark my words.

Walcott, Charles and Louis fought 20+ years and Moore fought 30+ years. Meantime Rocky only fought 8 years then simply disappeared during his Prime. What more proof does one need to understand that these 4 ATG's were already ring-worn and washed before facing Marciano. Rocky was scared to come out of retirement to fight Liston.

They are professional boxers they don't take it like you do they have a job eliminate the man standing across from you that's it no hard feelings about it your guy lost to Rocky that's why you are mad about it he has beaten the best heavyweight of all time with dynamite in his fists if you can't give him credit for that than you will most likely end up sad and alone for the rest of your life you can't even give credit where it's due you must hate on even yourself for making the simplest mistakes as well
