Rocky Mountain Road Trip in the Citroen DS!

Hi!
This time we're taking this old Citroen on a scenic road trip through the Canadian Rocky Mountains. I saw a video from car and driver, and I thought it was bullshit the way they portrayed Citroens as unreliable, when all they had to do was a little maintenance and the car would have been fine. I decided to put my money where my mouth is and attempt a long-distance road trip in my even older Citroen. I took no crew, no trailer, and no ugly Escalade to pull myself around if it went wrong. I hope you enjoy this little video of my adventure; Stella and I had a great time! A special thank-you to the lovely Michelle and Julia for the help filming this video! Thanks for checking it out!

They're pretty expensive to restore if you pay someone to do the work; not much more than any other car if you can do it yourself. As usual, it is cheaper in the long run to buy the very best. I can do all of the work myself, so I can save cheap, rusty cars. Thanks for watching the vid!

Hi! I found the car locally, rusting away in a driveway. I repaired the body and some mechanical issues, but I did not modify anything.

1200 miles without a breakdown (especially through mountains) on a 40 plus year old foreign car is fantastic.

There is nothing like these vintages Citroens, in 1955 when the DS was introduced, it was an outrageous and extraordinary design, and very French. Your an artist and an engineer in your own right, I enjoy your videos and not just the French cars, but also all the vintage cars, thanks.

I still get that Citroën feeling when I drive my 1982 CX Diesel. Drove from Vancouver to Hope and back yesterday. No other car gives me that "Feel"Thanks for sharing your trip with us, mine still plays cassettes!

My sentiments exactly; it's the closest you can get to driving a piece of modern art. The shape is so compelling... even if it was terrible to drive, it would be a great car. The fact that it is such an amazing car to drive is just the icing. People who have never seen one are always amazed at its capabilities!

Scott, I somehow missed this video and was more than pleased to see how much fun you and Stella had. I loved the shot of her in the front during the boat ride. I suspect she's never had a boat ride before, but she appeared to handle it well. It's nice to see that you like cassettes too. I've got quite a collection of them. Like old cars, it seems that cassettes are making something of a comeback as well.

I thought Citroens were so ugly back when this car was new. Well, the sedans, anyway. I was on the fence when it came to these wagons. But, after getting a good look at them, they are on my list of cars to own. I'm a bit of a wagon guy, anyway, and this car is so cool. I really enjoyed this ride. Love looking down that long sloping hood. Another great video! Totally different Citroen, but I tried to buy a Dyane 6 a short while ago. It was just so different from anything I've ever owned. It ended up going to Edmonton.

Tears in my eyes watching this. Stella really loved to ride. The car is a wet dream. I've owned a few wagons. '74 Datsun 510. 2000 Saturn LW. A few others thrown in. It's a shame that wagons have fallen from popularity.

Hey thanks! I painted it "Bleu d'Orient", an original Citroen colour. I did the roof in silver 'flake for a little sparkle. This car has been terrific; very reliable, especially when you consider that it is not a restored car. A little preventative maintenance goes along way with these cars. I still have the 604; I was going to redo it this spring, but then I got started on this DS, and I ran out of time for the Peugeot. I hope to get it going for next year!

Hi! You are correct; the steerable headlights were not available in North America because of a standardization law that required all cars to use interchangeable headlights. I have a set of the steerable lights for the other DS I am restoring; they really add to the car, I think. Thanks for checking out the video!

Brilliant! Stella adds such class to any car she sits in - the DS? Of course! The Dodge hotel Limo? Wow! Her sitting like... well like Stella on the back seat of the limo with the shreds of headliner dangling down as if she had just enjoyed a hot night’s luvin on the back seat was memorable. I had several of these, awesome cars! One tip, it sounds like the hydraulic pump is coming on every 5 seconds. That may indicate internal hydraulic leak or one accumulator low on nitrogen.

I once drove my DS from Edmonton to High Level, got out and was immediately attacked by mosquitoes! Didn't like it there, got back in and drove it all the way back to Edmonton. Long day but I wasn't even tired! Truly like riding on a cloud with the wind at your back. Thanks for the video!

Great vid drove a DS thrity odd years ago the guy I got it from called it (the gears) a manualmatic. Wonderful memories. J. Leno says it is a better ride than a Rolls Royce so true.

Citroën first participated in international motorsport events with its DS. It won very often, for example, at the Monte Carlo Rally (1959 and 1966)

Coldwarmotors...just caught this video and it Brought smile to my face. I used to have a DS21 Safari here in Oz. I too bought it as 'wreck'...a big green frog that was sitting atop a mountain meadow hidden by long grass- when I got it going (rats had made their home on fuel lines and electricals) after jury rigging a fuel supply- It rose above the grass after ten years sitting forlorn. I loved that car. I too had my fluffies (my Chow Chow doggies) drive around with me- they loved the big wide windows and generous glass house. Cheers mate- brought back memories of good times.

I love this kind of thing...good job with mixing in the scenery with the story of the car. Keep up the maintenance and that DS will run fine, just as with any old car. I know my old Ford is that way.

Seems to me a 1967 or 1968 D, because of the dubble headlights and the "old" door handles. But yet the new dash. I owned one back in 1973 and 1974. Drove it from Holland through Germany. Austria, the forme Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldavia, Ukraina, USSR to St. Petersburg. Took a ferry to Kiel-Germany and than back to Holland. Drove a 14.000 km without any problem. Just a half liter of oil. Great car! Good memories! Good old times! Now I am "old" but beard, no sandals.....

Citroen is now a "badge-engineered" Peugeot. The last Hydraulique Citroen is nearing the end of its production life.We traveled over the American Rocky Mountains some years ago. When we approached Mt. Rushmore we took a road that was covered in at least 6 inches/15cm of snow. There were no tire tracks. Up with the ID21FH Break to its 11"/28cm underbody clearance and over the pass we went - no problem! We went through the tunnel that is oriented directly toward the Rushmore Memorial.Coming on down, when we were pst the deep snow, we met two ladies in an old giant Cadillac sedan. The driver asked if the road was open. "For us, yes. For you, no!"

Jason Carpp Lots of mechanical parts are, but most body parts you have to fix or make yourself. I think the DS is easier for me to get parts for than the Saab 99. Well, maybe not; they're both pretty obscure.
