Күн бұрын

We were fortunate to receive our second product to test from RentACoop. This time we try out a 5 lb port feeder and 1 gallon cup or nipple style waterer. They also sent us an adjustable stand that can accommodate one of these. Overall we were pleased with the feeder and waterer, but our opinion of the shelf is to be determined. Thank you for taking the time to watch.

***********ROCKY CREEK HOMESTEAD****************
After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

Oh wow I didn’t realize that they would figure out the feeder that quick. I’m about to order those cups using your link on the other video. Thanks for sharing the feedback. I’ll be picking up my hens in two weeks and I can’t wait!!

That’s awesome man. Any particular types of hens your getting? The water cups are great. For first timer and cost wise, a standard feeder should do you just fine. I may use the ports kit and do a diy feeder one day though.

@@RockyCreekHomestead sorry for the late reply, got the chickens over the weekend while visiting my friend that breeds them. Ended up with 6 Blue Andalusian Hens and a rooster as well as 2 Cochin hens as he suggested they make great moms to raise chicks if I plan to let them hatch out chicks. Thanks for all your help, I have been learning lots from your videos!

I like the waterer and feeder. I look forward to seeing how it works for you. I get tired of trying to get the cap of my 5 gallon waterer screwed on right. It never goes on easy. Thank you for the information. Stay Safe and God Bless.

I don’t have screw on 5 gallon lids but the snap on ones I have are hard to get off. They snap on super tight. The square waterer I initially put the rentacoop cups on seems they be the easiest to open and close.

It is pretty cool, just not enough to support our size flocks. I may eventually buy the port kit and do a diy style like I did the waterer

@@RockyCreekHomestead yeah. That port kit would be nice for larger flocks. Might work out better for me as well.

Those are not bad for a few chickens. If you end up getting more a trash can works best. You just get the brute, 32 gallon I think does 3 50lb bags. I'll have to check. But anyway. You drill 3" holes about 1.5 inches from the bottom and as many as you need. I do 4-6 depending on the size of my hens. Then you take some 90 degree elbows and pop em in so that the outside of the trash can is flush with the holes for the hens to stick their heads in, the 90 degree elbow is facing down so they can eat the feed and as they eat it, gravity does the rest. You can leave it outside because rain won't get in. You can use it for if you need to go away for a day or two. I actually do it for my goats as well with 4 inch holes/elbows.

Thank you for the breakdown and advice. I do plan to make one before we have to go out of town again. I don’t mind feeding daily, but really want any options that makes it easier when we need to go away for a few days. Thank you.

I was looking at the incubator 🤔 The Rent a Coop incubator looks perfect. I've never had a problem with the feeder and water with the tray on the bottom, In the winter I just use heated dog dishes for water lol.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
I will most likely still use my heated waterer or rubber bowls in the winter. Our harsh time of winter usually only lasts about 3 months so I can still use these cups for the bulk of the year. I hadn’t looked at their incubator. I’ll have to peak at it. My basic trusty foam farm innovations one has actually done well for us.

@@RockyCreekHomestead Harsh temps here is -35c or lower so the heated dish is needed. I found the heated chicken waterers you buy weren't good enough and cracked. It's chilly here for 2 or 3 weeks every year lol but then it get's normal again between -15c to -20c. The bright sunny days make up for it ;) I'd rather have cold and sun than rain and muck any day.

It worked well for limiting waste. One negative I discovered with this size feeder though is the tube takes up most of the internal area so cleaning inside if needed would be very difficult without taking it apart.

the stand will not work well (top heavy)for size of bucket maybe bigger

You’re correct. It was okay if up against something, but the feet are too narrow and didn’t hold up if knocked into or jumped on.

That water would be chick size without the stand Does water flow back into the bucket at all? With the cups? Thats why i like the nipple but its hard getting young chicks to use the nipples I liked your video before and was going to order the metal cups for outdoor use But the plastic ones for chicks sounds good to

A feeder that tiny is useless unless you enjoy refilling it every single day, even with just a few chickens. That has to be for the lunatics who have 1 chicken in a city apartment (apparently that's common on the west coast among all the nuttery). And it's absurd to think their pre-made plastic is automatically more waterproof or free of leaks than buying the ports and building one yourself. Are you assuming everyone is a moron who can't use plumbers tape? 30 gallon open top food grade drum with lid, add a spigot, run some pvc and attach the water cups to the pvc and you don't have to think about water for 2-4 weeks depending on whether. Similar situation with the feeder ports.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
I completely agree that it’s too small for a flock. It was a great opportunity to test the ports though and they work great. I really only use it when brooding pullets now and it does help reduce the mess once their a little bigger

I’m not sure how it works purchasing property if your not an actual citizen. Even as a citizen depending on where you purchase your land there could still be restrictions on what you can do with that land.
