I knew Rod - Ian Paice - Eric (Jack) Keene - Chris Banham - Roger Lewis when they were The M.I.5 previously Jimmy Bond & The M.I.5 - they then changed to The Maze with Catari Catari / Easy Street, then the band split into 2 with Rod & Ian going the Deep Purple route and Eric, Chris going into Alice Soundtech mixing desks with ex Engineer Ted Fletcher with the then late Joe Meek (producer / Eq - Compressor fame) and the rest you know. Eric & Ian used to engineer for us along, later with Ted Fletcher, ah such days down at Virgin Sound in 1a Bexley Street, corner of Alma Road, Windsor... would love to catch up with Roger Lewis guitarist who went back to Germany. Eric is in the West Country and I'm proud to have introduced him to his now wife via TouchwoodMusic.com website... and Rod, he went off with one of my girlfriends from Datchet as I remember... Rod get in touch, many stories to share - anyone with contact please pass on. Michael /oak77.com /touchwoodmusic.com

he tried to start a Deep Purple band in Mexico in 1980, lawyers for DP found out, sued and won, as a result he no longer receives royalties from the three DP albums he sang on, and any other subsequent monies made by being a musician go to the lawsuit penalty

I love his voice too. He was a very handsome guy in his youth. His style was suited for love songs and hard rock like Captain Beyond.

That sixties sound and style. Rod was a great singer. Good luck to him.

Jimi Jameson of Survivor did the same dam thing, went out on the road with session players billing himself as Survivor. He was sued but didn't suffer the nearly ungodly consequences that Rod Evans did. Shame on DP management

Not really a bad song but yes the wall of sound production on this was bombastic . Rod did have a poppier voice that would have suited the Mach II version of Deep Purple but on that bogus Deep Purple , Rod did do a better version of Smoke The Water than Mach III did . Of course Rod’s vocal work with Captain Beyond proved that he was not limited . He can growl a little but his voice is traditional bel canto not gravely bluesy or screechy , strectchy octaves like Ian Gillians

Sometimes that wall of Sound or over instrumentation from that era ,that I think was pioneered by Phil Spector , worked and sometimes it didn't. On this song it didn't . Rod had a fine voice on his own but like every good Singer there were songs he did that didn't suit him . Rock was still young in 60s and sometimes Producers and Engineers didn't always do it well. In this song I can hardly hear Rod's fine voice. Horns are bombastic and Rod's voice sounds like it is miked wrong. Song although 60's Popish isn't bad.
