We used to sing this song in 1963 in our music lesson at our school in north Manchester. Our teacher Mr Brown was proud to say he knew the man who wrote it. The original first line was gasworks CROFT. We had many crofts near us. They were a plot of land where a building had been demolished and levelled. Often they would build wooden garages for locals to rent. We used to play football and cricket on them.

Hope no one has forgotten that this song was written by the immortal Ewan MacColl, (born in Salford in 1915). Who also wrote "if ever I saw your face".

So many people sing this song and have no idea that it's about my home town of Salford. The gasworks were demolished a couple of years ago, very much against the wishes of Salfordians. A large group of people stood by singing thus song as the demolition continued. Ewan MacColl was the father of ill-fated Kirsty MacColl, had been married to Joan Littlewood and later to Peggy Seeger.

Indeed it was and it does tell a poignant tale. Few people would know either that Ewans real name was James Miller ✌️ The killing of Kirsty was never properly investigated because of people in high places, but the death was reckless at least and possibly manslaughter. 😢😢 Great and legendary artists, as indeed is good time Rod. 👍

Great seeing Rod pick up the guitar and playing it on stage. I've also seen him perform this song in Houston, TX once it was great then too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful delight from 1969. Again a Great performance & wonderful keepsake of recorded time & melodic sound. :)
