I just lost my dad to brain cancer. He couldn’t speak but could hear. He loved this music era and he loved his boats and navigating those waters. He wouldn’t let go during his passing so I played this song and he peacefully finally let go to be free from his suffering ...sailing home across the sea to be near lord and to finally be free to be with him....😢💔 🕊 ⛵️🌊. It was the perfect song for my dad. R.I.P.

My mother requested this song be played at her funeral in 2003 at age 57 due to cancer. It is a very spiritual song if you listen closely to the lyrics. She died at night with us all around her so every time I her "through the dark night far away" i think of her flying away through the dark night far away to be near God, to be free of her pain.

This was one of my dads favourite songs when he served in the Navy. It was the same song that played at his funeral. Now it has been passed down to me as I have gone into the Navy too. The feeling this song gives me is so hard to describe. Being only 20, it's hard to not think about him. Accepting the fact music changes, it's still nice to go back to this song every now and again. Gives me solitude and peace.

When I was younger, my dad was a sailing instructor running a sailing school in South Africa. He loved sailing, he loved boats, and he taught me and my brother to love it too. He used to sing his own version of this song to us every night. Brings back a ton of old happy memories; sailing along the coast, being seasick, being terrified when we left SA in a massive squall, fishing at the docks of the marina with my brother, the feeling of hugging my dad when he'd just come home and was wearing the sailing school jacket... Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and appreciate all the simplicity and oblivion of my life then

All these comments sharing their story is so beautiful and touching,so I wanted to share mine aswell: I lost my grandpa in 2018 because of cancer. This song was played at his funeral, since then I can't hear the song without crying. He loved sailing and sailed away every summer for a few months over the sea in many different countries. 'Can you hear me?' If so:I love you grandpa.I think I've never said you that. This song was written for you and will always have a special place in my heart, right next to you❤

'Sailing' is a timeless classic that always transports me to another place and time. The lyrics are so poetic and the melody is so captivating that it's impossible not to get lost in the song. Rod Stewart's voice is incredibly soulful and emotive, and he brings so much depth and feeling to every word. It's a song that speaks to the wanderlust in all of us and inspires us to set sail and chase our dreams. Thank you, Rod, for this beautiful and unforgettable masterpiece.👏

Haven't really heard this since 1975, when I was a small kid. Then, I had no way to know that I'd be hearing this in 2024, an ocean away from my beloved husband. I've had to be in another country, looking after another family member, for a year and a half. I can't get back to my husband until July, and every part of this song washes over me in soul longing. The hung vocal refrain at the end would end me if I didn't know I could sail back to him in 2 months. Kid me could not hear the sublime beauty in this art, until now.

Rod Stewart....who the H... is Rod Stewart? Please hear my story, i arrived in London in August 1975 from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) never saw Television in my life we did not have TV in our country back then. I remember watching "top of the pops" and the number one hit was "Cant give you anything but my love" by the stylistics absolutely loved it always looked forward to a Thursday night to hear this song P.S we didn't have a radio. Two weeks later i hear Sir Rod Stewarts song I am sailing and not the stylistics to say i was disappointed is an understatement. Many years later i realized its not just the "tune" but the memorable words that one remembers sung beautifully by Sir Rod Stewart thankyou very much for a memorable ballet.

This song was the theme tune to a documentary about HMS Ark Royal. My elder brother was in the Royal Navy at the time. I was in my early teens and missed him so much. He passed away last year and I miss him terribly. When I hear this song it brings this time back so clearly. I begin to feel a bit sick when listening to this song, the tears flood my eyes and my head feels tight as memories rush my brain of my Dad's passing last year. He had this play at his funeral.. 'Can you hear me through the dark clouds.. Far away' touches me so much, I sing "Can you hear me?" everytime I hear this song, hoping for an answer from my Dad.. At least a pat on the shoulder or a whisper "I'm always here"..just something. Dad, if you're watching me type this, I want you to know how much I love you and miss you. Take care up there, okay? Always brings a tear, this song was playing lots when my dad went down to the Falklands in 82, he came home safe and sound, too many dads never made it back home, they will be forever sailing x x x

I first heard this song at the age of 14, when i was in middle school, my Chinese literature teacher played this in a lesson and i got fascinated by it immediately. Now it's been more than 10 years and I have crossed the ocean and come all the way to Canada. Life is like sailing, a lonely journey.
