Күн бұрынtfw a country's home video golden age was in the 1990s, when LD was the hottest possible consumer-grade thing. And don't give me the "Well, the image stabilization is better and it's been dust busted/cleaned up on the BD" bs. The warm, saturated Eastmancolor, the entire POINT of Rodan's overall appeal, is royally fucked. Toho Video would've been better off issuing the BD in black and white, and that's something they cannot even get right either. It's even more insulting than the piano wire removal.

20 years of technological advancement and all we get is this insult of a color grade. Just an absolute slap in the face to the director of photography, the set, costume and production designers, and to Ishiro Honda.

I’d always heard the narrative about “Japanese video color timing is different from the West,” but considering that Toho’s digital releases are the only ones with desaturated/soft/greenish color timing… 👀

to my eye it doesn't even look timed. it looks like a flat raw with just the slightest bit of fade correction

The mid-1980s to early-1990s was a great era for home video, especially if you’re a LaserDisc junkie.

They sharpened some of the detail in the BD version, but at the cost of desaturating the colours and the warmth, making it look washed out. :-/

This really makes me wish Toho decided to properly remaster these films on Blu Ray, hopefully 4K will have a better restoration process

Toho doesn't give a crap how their movies look, as long as people keep buying the merchandise they'll do what they want.

To be fair it is an early Blu-Ray which was a time where there were a lot of transfers that aged like milk but yeah that is WAY too dark to even make out things. If we had a 4K with proper color timing though that would be a different story. A Domesday rip of that LD would do wonders.

If we had the smoothness of the 2009 BD with the color of the 1992 LD, that would’ve been perfect. But sadly, that’s just a pipe dream for now.

The editors must have looked at the contrast and saturation and decided to 'fix' it. Mostly it looks like they really turned down the contrast. Probably using softwate default settings to 'even' everything out.
