Oh, if only the entire song with Marilyn and Lauren could have been recorded! I saw them do it B'Way and it remains the funniest musical number I've ever seen.

Woman of the year is an amazing musical... i want it to be done again on broadway. i did this show in vancouver 4 years ago, and fell in love with it!

Such a fun score. Hoping that one day the filmed-for-Television tour performance with Barbara Eden and Marilyn Cooper materializes.

They are one and the same. Marilyn was a close friend of the struggling Sondheim in the 50's. She appeared in numerous shows throughout the 60's and 70's. Even shared a dressing room with Barbra during Wholesale. Class Act!!

I knew they did that number at the Tonys. They also did Bacall's title number (or maybe it was One of the Boys). On a funny note, Marilyn is a friend of my sister's. As a joke my sister had her call me at my office two years ago and sing that number (and the one from Two By Two!) for me on my birthday! I can tell you she was letter perfect on both. She's a true gem!

You're absolutely right. Marilyn Cooper and Lauren Bacall did it for those Tony Awards - they were in the original Cast. That night Marilyn Cooper won the Tony Award (Supporting); later on Ms. Raquel Welch took over for Ms. Bacall during the latter's vacation.

Believe it or not Debbie Reynolds was the best of the three ladies to do the role on Broadway. She sang a new song called "Who Would Have Dreamed" which is phenomenal

That wasn't new. John Kander also had Raquel Welch sing it.

Didn't Lauren & Marilyn do this on the 1981 Tony Awards? I remember it. It brought down the house.

Yup, that was the same Marilyn Cooper. She played Rosalia in the original Broadway production of West Side Story. She was also in Gypsy (played Agnes). Of course I got this information, well confirmation, from Copper's NY Times obituary.

@Eldoray It shouldn't be forgotten Bacall (and Welsh too, for that mattter) was primarly a performer in films, where the rules are a little more relaxed than in the live, theatrical profession, that demands the discipline of memorization of one's lines. In fact, it seems Bacall advanced this trend of film performers appearing in Broadway productions, a trend that has grown to ridiculous proportions today. There was a time actors went from stage to film, a more logical practice.

@Eldoray Even Lauren Bacall isn't necessarily Lauren Bacall. My friend's aunt saw Bacall in the Boston production of Noel Coward's "Waiting In The Wings," about a week before we did, and reported to us Bacall had to call out "Line" to the script supervisor a few times during the play. So much for "seasoned pro," huh?

I remember when Raquel took over the lead the show sold out and became even a bigger hit then when Lauren was in it. Ms Bacall was all ready upset about Raquel being her replacement and refused to to press and photo opportunities with Raquel.

Bacall did "One of the Boys" on the Tonys

That's great! What a voice. Great actress too. By the way, the original cast of "West Side Story" on Broadway lists a 'Marilyn Cooper'. Could that be the same lady? I would not be surprised! I also saw her on You Tube in an episode of "Alice", singing with Linda Lavin!

Raquel was perfect for her role. Only the ugly and the envious begrudge her talent. Marilyn is perfect and her only number in the show was designed to make her shine. However, don't underestimate Raquel's talent and staying power in show business. That takes a lot of effort and skill. And she's still going... In your face, haters !

Just a clarification on a previous post: Kander and Ebb wrote 'Who Would Have Dreamed' for Raquel Welch when she signed on for the show..News footage of Welch rehearsing the song with Kander, as well as performing it onstage, exist. Check out Debbie Reynolds in a clip of her performing"One of the Boys' on KZfaq. She merely bellowed and yelled out the lyrics. So unpleasant to listen to.
@TruthSerum1014 жыл бұрын
Who Would Have Dreamed was actually written for Bacall, it was cut during the pre-Broadway tryouts.
@everythingclassic17054 жыл бұрын

@@j.j.1753 I never saw Bacall in the show, only hearing it here on YT. But she's off-key in places even in the original cast recording. She could be a fine actress and she was a star but as a singer... well, uh...
