Of all the actors he's the one I've most consistently heard was an incredibly nice guy in person, he always had time for fans and never had a nasty word for anyone. RIP Roddy, you were a great actor and a class act of a human being.

He kept his Brit accent with him until the end, love it! :-) delightful to my ears, I wish I could speak English that fluently I see he was in great shape in his 68th year, so sad cancer took him away only two years later... I've read he was so beloved by everyone in the film industry, like his close friend sweetie Natalie, and it's so rare. I hope his excellent work as a photographer and his precious archives are in safe hands, it's history of modern era beyond mere entertainment:-)

Thanks for watching! He just never stopped working- if you look at his iMDB page, it's stunning! He did everything from TV to BIG features, from Bookwoom on Batman to Cornelius in Planet of the Apes to great stuff on Kraft Suspense Theater and the Twilight Zone... and then Octavian in Cleopatra. Incredible. Nothing he could not do.

I have seriously been in love with Roddy ever since my Mom introduced me to 'That Darn Cat" when I was a youngster... now I'm all grown up and a certifiable classic film NUT and have seen a ton of his magical work in film, theater and photography... he is truly an idol of mine. Much of it is due to his huge variety of exceptional artistry of course, but your channel's videos have enlightened me as to the kind of genuine man he was personally, beloved by everyone he ever touched.

***** Roddy McDowell was very popular and respected here in Ireland over all age groups. I was in my 20's when he died and I remember being at the work canteen that morning and people talking about him with real affection and appreciation. Unfortunately the Internet wasn't then what is it now and therefore he may not have been as aware of his popularity around the world. Myself, I have a rating scale for movies, with a plus one bonus for my favourite actors. Roddy McDowell was a deciding factor in whether I watched a certain film or not on any occasion.

Numinous20111 Oh thank you so much for your kind words and your interest! Have you seen his silent 16mm Kodachrome home movies that he left to us? (BTW, his name is spelled "McDowall", with an a and not an e... he was a Scotsman... and very PROUD of it. I am one quarter Irish, so I have a particular affection for your lovely nation as well...)

It's so cool to see a guy who moved to America at a young age of 12 and not lose his accent. Unlike the actors now who spend a few years in the States after moving there in their 20s and sound like hybrids.

I think it was 1974 when Roddy McDowell gave this young fan a wonderful gift. On a visit to the Fox Studio lot, we ended up on a sound stage where they were shooting the Planet Of The Apes TV series. We were watching a scene with Roddy and other cast members that took place in an ape home. During a break, in full make-up and costume, Roddy walked across the stage to me (and I'm thinking, "he's walking over to me?!"), scrunched his brow and with that soft, sweet voice said, "Hello". I recall wanting to fall over in shock. What a surprise! What a moment! He took the time to give me an amazing memory that I have always cherished. Thanks Roddy!

Luke, your video treasures continue to amaze me. Mr. McDowall is riveting here. So true about Jean Arthur and her age. She made two Philo Vance films in the late 20's - early 30's. The studio system - for bad or worse, it worked and produced magic!

In my collection of 775+/- movies, 16 have him , including some fairly rare ones. Confirm Or Deny On The Sunny Side Kidnapped Class Of 1984 (etc)......... A very little bit part in an obscure movie called Hey!Hey! U.S.A.! (1938) I never get tired of watching him. It also seems that he had a personality to match his voice. There’s a saying: To have a friend, you must be a friend. It seems that everyone he knew was a friend. That in itself is a legacy.

Also, his Sunday hot dog get togethers were loved by everybody--as was he. Roddy was here in Santa Fe acouple years before his passing for a benifit--so I'm glad I got to see him in person. He is the reason I love drama and film so much. He had such a love for film and film preservation; you really have to respect that. He also seems to be a rarity in the business in the sense that he made no enemies at all seemingly. You only need to watch him to see why. Thank you for the memories, Roddy.

I truly love the British actors above the Americans. I am not trying to be prudish but they seem more interested in the art of acting than celebrity and how can we beat their awesome speech and execution of language. I always loved Roddy and wished he and his type were still here. Oh yes Dame Judy Dench. :) (and many more)
@soapbxprod9 жыл бұрын
Kim Clayton I think it's also a generational thing too- and the "studio system" had a lot to do with cultivating and maintaining a level of dramatic professionalism- at least at the high end of the industry... actors under contract worked 6 days a week- when they weren't shooting their scenes, they were in classes for everything from dialogue to horseback riding... what a life, huh? Like being paid to be in College... :)
@kimclayton28609 жыл бұрын
lol. Yes I think the studio system had pluses that are not here today. Also they controlled the actors' life and could be a tyrant of one personal issues. But in the end I still think it produced better films and actors with all its' other flaws.

Strange how Helen Mirren manages to excite the guys because in interviews, she's really quite a non-nonsense character and she has admitted that she's not romantic in the slightest, not with her husband or anyone else. Nice. You have to admire the women that have a good career longevity in this profession because they are genuinely talented [as opposed to being mere eye candy]. Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Tilda Swinton, Jodie Foster, Annete Bening, Glen Close etc. None of them are young or beautiful but fuck -- they can act and have the tenacity to go on! You do get completely inept numskulls such as Kristen Stewart who should be drowned - but not too many. Roddy really knew his onions!

McDowell is uncommonly erudite, insightful and well-informed, but he is still more concerned with burnishing Hollywood myths and legends than getting at the truth. The notion that no actor today can get the kind of training or experience they had under the contract system is just not true. For example, an actor with a regular role in a TV series today will work far more regularly and usually do more demanding work than comparable actors playing bit parts under the contract system. And the notion that film acting is somehow gruelling work is utter nonsense. Every other person on a film set works harder, without the luxury of two, three or four hour breaks where they can retire to a trailer or dressing room.
@generalyellor21873 жыл бұрын
Do you even work in the industry? I do, and for over thirty years, and would disagree with just about everything you said. You clearly have no idea of the pressure actors face when they are pretty much singularly responsible for the success (or failure) of a show. No one blames the director, the editor, the Crafts Services people, any of the grips or gaffers when a show fails. They typically blame the writers first, the actors second. And the BTL crew work long hours, but a lot of that is sitting around during set-ups or between takes.
