Using a pair of dt 900 pro x’s and it’s interesting how it plays into the strengths of the 440 pure. The dt 900s are quite dark and you hear every last detail if the room something was recorded in, so when the song at the end started it was always immediately obvious to me which mic was which, even though I was kind of just letting the video play in the background while doing something else. (I already have a 440, no beed to convince me it’s good xD) It was such a huge difference I was actually surprised enough to write this comment. The main difference to me really is the room rejection, the 440 just handles that so incredibly well. Great review as always!

I've been jumping from the AT2035 to Rode's NT1 and NT1a, to really liking the LCT 440. I think this video was what I needed to finally make a decision. I'm going with the LCT 440. It seems to fit perfectly with my circumstances: I have a low-mid baritone voice (not quite as deep as yours), and no acoustic treatment where I'll be mostly recording. And in my country there's a considerable price difference, the NT1 is at least 70.000 ARS while you can get an LCT 440 for 57.000 ARS.

I like that you interviewed the artist about the mic. A perspective often missing from reviews.

I've recently picked up 440 pure (and thank you for covering that mic, helped me a lot to actually decide to go 440 route), and dang i love that thing. Really nice tone and man was I impressed with room/background noise rejection it provides. I live right next to the road - and a pretty noisy one i must say - so i always avoided condensers due to them being really sensitive. But right now it sounds like I get more outside noise with my sm7b compared to lct 440 pure. Maybe it's just me, you know, "loving the new one better". But yeah, I would agree that shock mount is a little bit underperforming. So apart from living right next to the road, I live right above the subway line, so when train passes, I can hear it on recording, even though tapping on the stand or table doesn't get transferred to the recording. When it comes to pop filter, yeah, it could've been better, but I'm fine with trading a bit of effectiveness in favor of convenience and really slick looks :) So once again, thank you for your videos! Helps a lot!

A question about the high end of the Lewitt 440 - can it be tempered a bit with EQ? I mean it in the sense that the brightness can be brought towards the TLM microphones more? Or is it a type of harshness that will always remain inthe signal?

As you can see from my channel, I have songs I recorded with mxl 990 but my voice is in a dark tone. I want to switch to Lewitt 440, but will its brightness turn out the darkness in my voice? And what kind of change would it be, I wonder if it's worth it? What is your suggestion, the reason why I chose lewitt catches my eye in more modernist works.

Thanks for another great vid! Both the NT1 and 440 Pure are wonderful mics. You may or may not remember, in your review of the Neumann TLM 102, I commented that I owned the NT1 and was interested in either the TLM 102 or 103. One thing I neglected to mention, was I also own a 440 Pure. I had convinced myself that I slightly preferred the NT1 on my voice. Anyhow… mildly interesting story… I did end up buying the TLM 103. It’s a beautiful mic and I loved it. HOWEVER… just for kicks, I put it up against the 440 on my voice. Put the capsules right next to each other and then recorded both at the same time. I did this on two different songs, in a fairly well-treated room. Results? On one song, I, ever so slightly preferred the 103. But, on the other, I clearly preferred the 440. It sat in the mix effortlessly, without eq. Long story short.. while I still think the 103 is wonderful, I returned it and am now using the 440 most of the time. One other perhaps interesting thing… on the one song that I slightly preferred the 103 on, I tried some simple eq to see if I could get close to the 103 sound. I boosted approx 3db around 100hz and cut approx 3db around 4K. I then set up Ableton to easily A/B them and closed my eyes while doing so. Basically, I couldn’t tell the difference between them. I even guessed wrong a couple of times. I learned so much from this experience. Thanks again for the great vids!

You have a really down to earth unpretentious channel, and I like your direct presentation style. I also think your comparisons hit the right spot - well timed, and the blind comparisons with the reveal afterwards are effective. I''ve come to the conclusion, where possible, one should save up for a few really good microphones, which are : 1. Well manufactured - i.e do not have quality issues with significant variances from one microphone to another, and 2. Which avoid resonances in - in the case of the NT1 - I think it has this in the sibilance area. 3. This final criteria is hard to describe cos no one is talking about it. I'll use the word "resolution", i.e speed of response of the diaphragm, from soft to loud. Some microphones sound like they have already been compressed - e.g dynamic microphones, which is a sound of its own, but I think with the kind of digital and analog tools at our disposal, I'd prefer a microphone that has a more accurate resolution, or what some would call an impulse response, which is more true to the input. My thinking is that all kinds of components in the amplification, affect the slew rate. Creatively for some sources like voices, some microphones, especially the vintage kind, add harmonics, probably some hysteresis, almost like a doubling of the source - with a miniscule delay, making it all thick and gooie (liek gummed up), which flatters certain sources, depending on what you have in mind. So I think microphones should clearly belong in one camp or the other - e.g tube mics, like the U47, and TLM's like the TML 103, each with their own signature. For most beginners/hobbyists, we will not be able to afford and maintain a high quality tube microphone, so one interesting line of education would be - what kind of processing can one add digitally, to emulate that smoothness, to add that tube or transformer goodness to a transformerless/non tube(valve) microphone? You may want to explore this in one of your videos. I think it would have a lot of traction. In this comparison the 440 pure just seemed like a more consistent microphone. I own the original NT1, (bought between 2002 and 2004) which unfortunately seems to have stopped working, very sad, cos I probably only used it on 4 or 5 occasions. I'll see if it can be repaired - i.e find out what has gone wrong with it - cos I'd rather not have to spend on another microphone. And if I did have to spend on another microphone, my suspicion is that the NT1 has had a phenomenal ride, but clearly Rode is running out of ideas, there is not much that they can do to improve it, and they do not have anything much better in their line up. The NT1 is their cash cow. To have to have been forced to cut the price of the NT1 signature edition, to about $160, tells me that there is now real competition, to the NT1. My gut feeling is that in technology, we have to accept, sometimes the newer stuff is better because they have had more time to think about their designs, and more time to source better components, and thinking about manufacturing and design technology gets better over time. Long and short, the NT1 design has had its day, time for us to become more adventorous, try new things. The reality also is - for those who become more serious with this craft, we will end up with several microphones, and for each recording application, end up trying out more than one microphone, and over time have preferences as experience grows. So its never - one or the other. For the hobbyist who is only going to have one microphone - sure - just get an NT1, or Lewitt 240 - basically any decent microphone from any of the major manufacturers, in the $80 to $180 price range, and it will be good enough, subject to post recording EQ. Where I think the more expensive microphones like the Neumann U87 have an advantage is that post recording, they have less excessive resonances, and need less "reshaping" in the mix to fix obvious sonic anomalies - but of course you pay for the privilege. Definitely we are in a golden era of recording where within $300 - one can get highly respectable microphones with acceptable recording quality. I still feel however that there is this "graininess" I hear on all KZfaq vocal comparisons with condenser microphones, and wonder, do we need more accurate capsules to capture the human voice. But I think also that maybe these microphones are intended for recording with a bit more distance between the source and the capsule, than what most KZfaqrs adhere to. I hear this graininess in both cheap and expensive microphones, when voices are recorded, but not so with guitar recordings. Could be just me !, but this observation is consistent across so many KZfaq vocal/microphone comparisons, on KZfaq, and I cannot seem to get it out of my mind and wonder why is this so.

You should try and find a mxl 990. Nice boosted high end. It's fantastic on acoustic guitar if you can get it in the right neck position. Would love to see an episode on the mic and comparisons. Thankyou for all the great content so far 😁

Different mics suit different voices. So true. I own Lewitt 440 flex and my sound engineer told me it suits my voice so well. Wouldn't think twice to get another 440, whatever "edition". ....And thanks for the 'poop' :D (I love this kind of humour!)

The Lewitt was way too boomy on the guitar with some weird background noise. On vocals the lewitt was a bit too bright and plosive (needs a better pop filter). I think the NT1 was better. NT1 would require less post processing in the final mix. I would do probably a high pass and low pass roll off on the lewitt plus some mid high freq tweaking, as with the rode NT1 I would just do a little bit of tweaking as it sounded pretty good out of the gate. I think the NT1 wins for her voice and guitar, based off the highly compressed youtube audio and using AKG k371 and k361 headphones. Great video and much appreciated.

The Lewitt sounds like a winner. However, the one thing I noticed (and the singer mentions this) is that the dynamics aren't as strong. Almost like the Lewitt has compression built-in.

I understand why you prefer it. I have a dark voice myself, more so with congestion. I don’t prefer how I sound on the sm7b because of it. I, too, preferred the re20 because it was brighter to me than the sm7b. When I’m congestion free, my voice, which is also deep, has a sort of razor sibilant edge to it. Congestion free is the only way I prefer the nt1 since it’s really just capturing reality. My perfect mic would be a mix between the mkh 416 and maybe the tlm 103. I like the sound of the 416 on my voice, congestion free or not, but I wish the self noise was lower like the 103 or the nt1 for precisely the reasons you explained. There’s also a clarity(a sort of emptiness I can’t quite explain) that I hear on my tlm 103 that I wish my 416 had. I was thinking about the 440 at one point when I was scooping up a few microphones, but I figured if I can’t make things work with what I have so far, the problem is me.

Great review as usual. I have over 40 microphones, from the Shure sm58 to the Neumann TLM 103 AND I WOULD PUT MY Lewitt 440 and 540s up against of them . Love Lewitt microphones.

Great review! I tend to prefer the more neutral less bright mics. I wouldn't say that I like dark mics persay (the sm7b seems quite dark to the point of being bland to me), but I definitely enjoyed the nt1 more on your voice (although they're both FANTASTIC mics and I love that you go with what you love instead of what the crowd loves). But for music I liked the Lewitt better on her voice because of that added air. That's what I love about audio so much, it's so subjective and there are so many offerings that we can all find what we love! Would you ever consider reviewing the rode procaster? I'm curious what you think about it, especially compared to the sm7b and the re20.

Great video. The artist is beautiful (both in terms of voice and appearance). And her comments about the mics seem so spot on! I'm pretty torn between these mics. Lewitt is 10€ cheaper. Both sound great. NT1 a bit punchier and more balanced perhaps. LCT440 more detailed, bright, clear. I'm not sure if my voice needs more oomph in the low-mid frequencies or rather mid-high. I guess my voice is a pretty avg male voice, maybe on the lower side but quite mid-range. I definitely don't want to go too extreme in either direction. I don't want that super warm broadcaster sound. Both of these seem balanced *enough*. I was also looking at a SE V7 previously, a dynamic. But the thought of the mic being too quiet and having to be super close to it (with high gain as well) turns me off. I don't think background noise is THAT big of an issue. At least for me with a fairly quiet home/neighbourhood. Untreated. I mostly use my microphone for voice chatting and speech/VO/streaming type stuff. Not a recording musician even though I love music. So yeah. Dilemma 😂.

Hello again ! Not sure if you remember me but you were the videos I watched when deciding to get a sm57! I'm thinking of upgrading my sm57 to lewit, but not sure how lewit can handle in a very noisy room. Since even my sm57 noise still enters in (washing machine noise / heater noise etc.). Advice would be awesome thank you! Should I stick with sm57 or upgrade to lewit or is there any other mic recommendations for my situation. Thank you if you do respond!

Hi there. Thanks for the reviews and sharing. If you get the chance to review a Sontronics STC-2 - STC-3X or the SCT-20 please do. I think it is another microphone that you would like. They have a beautiful sound and even balance with that slight lift, similar to the Lewitt LCT440 that you like for your voice. They are not overly expensive either ranging from $250 to $330. The most popular model is the SCT-2 at around $300, which has a high pass filter and -10dB pad. The SCT-3 adds 3 polar patterns. The cheapest one is the SCT-20 which has no filter or pad. Apart from that it sounds as good as the other models as it has the same capsule and components. TBH I get on well enough with mics that have no switching at all like my TLM103. PS. I am not affiliated with Sontronics in any way. I have just recently purchased 2 of their microphones. The SCT-2 and SCT-3X. I am amazed at the sound and build quality for the asking price. They are also really beautiful in a retro kind of way. Sontronics are still using through hole boards with top quality components. I prefer the through hole circuit boards as they are easy to repair when a component goes out of value and are easily modify if needed. Not that I would modify one. They sound great as they are. The SMD boards that most are switching to are a real pain to work on. I noticed that the Rode NT2A mics that I got a little while ago have SMD circuit boards. I don't know when they changed to SMD for their lower end mics, but I wish they hadn't.

can you do a side by side comparison of the background noise rejection of both mics , by level matching both the outputs- since both mics have different sensitivity. i really want to look at the noise floor and see how much background noise the lewitt rejects in comparison to the nt1. i am thinking of buying a lewitt by selling my nt1 for this reason. can you help?

I feel like the Lewitt would have been the winner in the guitar recording for it's detail, but there was a weird, distracting rumble. Do you notice it? Maybe it's to do with the shock mount issue you mentioned. On Ursula's voice the Rode, to my ears, sounded much more natural and flattering. The Lewitt was just too sibilant for her particular voice. It does sounds good on your voice, though. Good vid.

May I be so bold to ask a question? Watching videos I noticed John Lennon used to double mic for effect eg two mics on one stand. Similar to double micing a guitar cab. I got to thinking: if you wanted to mix a dark and bright mic to cover a large range; what would you use? Could be dynamic, conderser, tube or a mix. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I bought this microphone on a whim since I was informed that is better for Voice Over and the fact that you said it does better on an untreated room. That's a major sell point for me. Nowadays the SMB went up in price to $400.

Are these mics good at rejecting surrounding noise or have you treated the room where you are recording & you also EQ to sound so good during post production ? had a few mics just got nt1 for 207 love how it sounds on my voice being 20 voice not fully dropped yet i can decifer if i want a warm sounding mic or brighter mic started with neewer usb to at2020 to sterling159 to nt1 next mic def a nueman lol the nt1 does job well need more time with it this will help me decide u87 or tlm 103 u87 is warmer side tlm brighter so.

LCT 440 is an incredible mic for the money. Anyone who doesn't know much about this stuff and just wants a fantastic sound for minimal fuss should grab one. I spent countless hours/days/weeks/months messing around with other mics for voiceover, ranging from a Yeti (which sounded like ass) to an SM57 (which sounded very good but had a hundred finnicky drawbacks like picking up hum and needing excessive gain and complicated EQing... and still at the end of all that didn't sound nearly as natural as the 440). Bought a 440, spent about 10 mins applying the simplest of EQ and some expander to catch mouth noise and breathing, spoke 30 deg off axis (but still centered on the mic's polar pattern) to avoid plosives and take a bit of the edge off... amazing results. Easy and done. This is what mics should be but so rarely are unless you spend thousands. Can't recommend it enough. The only down side is that the mount and pop filter now appear to be plastic, not metal. But at this price I'm amazed they were ever not plastic.

I had a scarlett studio setup, i want to upgrade now. I mostly record vocals and guitar and i am still very much confused between these 2 mics. I dont know which one to get.

All the Lewitt's to me sound rough in the high frequencies more like a dynamic mic. The Rode NT1 wins out on both vocals and guitar for me. Try putting them up against the AT 4040.

Hey man, just a bit of feedback - I know your heater is a perpetual issue, so it would help a lot of you had a highpassed version of the comparisons. I can immediately tell the 440 in a blind test just because of the rumble. Hard to get an objective idea of the difference when there's that neon sign saying "this is the lewitt"

alot of ppl on youtube try to make their voice real bassy, which is annoying sounding. I was just thinking that your voice isn't annoying like most audio channel's are. But then you switched to the rode, and it was bassier and starting to get annoying. So good call on the Lewitt!

Lewitt has a lot more floor noise or hum. RODE is noticeably quieter and brighter. For me I would have to go with the rode because of this. Things get too noisy when you have a couple of tracks recorded with the Lewitt. I had this problem with the shure sm7b. Thanks for the vid man!

I am just starting out in voiceovers and have an Electrovoice EV 320 and use SONY 7506. I feel like I might be better off with a Rode NT1 or Lewett Pure 440.

Nice review, but you have a pop filter on the Rode and not one on the Lewitt? Wouldn't that imbalance the sound sources?

For someone with a very deep voice i'm currently using a Shure SM7B but it can get a bit too bad for my voice. What microphone would you recommend for me? Would a Lewitt LCT 440 Pure be a good choice?

I think the NT1 was better during the singing test, but I think that's due to the lack of a pop filter. However, I also liked it better for the guitaring. The Lewitt sounded a bit harsh. My ears must work differently, because the results I heard werw the opposite of what you described. Also, I didn't hear background noise in either mic.

Listening on a Seinheisser Momentum 3, the Lewit has an unacceptable noise floor. It was so disturbing, I instantly recognized in blind test.

It's quite noticeable the Lweitt LCT 440 really makes the mid-low frequency darker, and the high frequency brighter. This makes NT1 sounds very neural and flat indeed. For guitar, NT1 sounds more spacious for bass, the Lewitt seems a hair thinner.

All great but wish you were the one singing. I clicked on the video because i was looking for a male singers comparison with a lower voice similar to mine which you have and you were talking about how you prefer the lewitt for your voice and continued to have a higher pitch voice singer sing into it. Not that they are bad but it would be nice to have both

BRUH I'VE BEEN AGONIZING OVER THESE TWO MICS FOR WEEKS AND I *JUST* BOUGHT THE NT1 AND U UPLOAD THIS AS SOON AS I GET IT AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Though now that I listen to the vocal tests tbh I still think I like how the NT1 sounds. It definitely seems a bit muddier in some instances, but tbh the LCT 440's brightness kinda hurts my ears sometimes. Maybe I'm just sensitive.

For Voice the NT1 is a bit flat .... works for voice nice for Audio Books and of course vocals.... for Podcasts, Radio, Commercials you have to give it a bit on the top. If you would mix the tracks from Ursula you would have to DeEss it to make the Guitar not fall apart from the Voice - or put it through sth vintage like LA2A (just my opinion). Frequency Response of the Lewit looks similar to the NT1"a" The Neumann TLM102 is as well quite brittle when you get close, but many people like this Radio or Commercial sound. Here in Germany many Radio Stations went for the TLM102 and it sounds that they even don't use a DeEsser .... bassy and brittle like hell ... the sound changed in the last 10 years a lot even at the more conservative Stations which used to have u87s .... I would give the (black) RODE NT1 the status of "the" Volkswagen" of mics - in general you can't go wrong with it at all - and the price is outstanding for that what you get (+ 10 years Warranty + no sound change if you buy another one after some years -> like AKG loves to do it)

I think the CAD Equitek E300S has a lower self noise spec than the Rose NT1A. I believe its noise spec is 3.7 dBA. It is a fairly bright mic, as well, so that is pretty impressive!

At first.. i liked the lewitt better. It seems to have that round smooth expensive sound to it.. but after working with it for a few weeks i got somehow annoyed of the sound. It has this 'low/mid boost with cut off highs' sound to me. I returned it. I think of tonality the rode is the better mic on the long run because of its flat tone.

Hello, I’m looking for most neutral SDC mic under 500$, I have my eyes peeled on Shure SM81 and Rode NT5/NT55. What would be a better choice? Open to other suggestions as well.

100% agree that it should be compared to the AKG C414!

English is very nice for testing microphones as sibilants are not pronounced that much, with some other languages the microphone shows its nasty sides easily. But it can be heard here, Lewitt is so much more sibilant when she sings although it sounds great when you speak.

If you feel like you need a brigther mic for your voice; how does the Rode NT1a compare to the Lewitt LCT 440 Pure for that purpose?

I love the Lewitt sound and have owned a few of their multi pattern mics. The only problem is, there’s a nearby cellular tower in my neighborhood and the Lewitts pick them up loudly. I get a painful digital buzzing only with this brand. I have an NT-1, and it’s totally quiet. I wonder if the pure also is prone to RF interference?

These seems to be more self noise with the LCT 440 pure (audible when you're jumping between the mics). I've heard reviewers say the difference vs the nt1 is soooo small its barely audible... so why am I hearing a difference? Did u have some AC/fan on when recording with the lct 440 pure?

Lewitt has some low-end rumble constant noise for some reason in this video... Surprised you didn't notice.

the lewitt has a noise in the low frequencies, the rode is cleaner in this area ;-)

My Rode NT1 just arrived, it really sounds great

What is the low rumble that is there everytime you use the Lewitt? Is it the bad shockmount? Its hard to compare those two when there is such a loud 50Hz rumble.

I think Lewitt handle eq better lot of people just base on sound but working with sound is different and Lewitt is better than the nt1. No offense to people opinion but cheap mic don’t take eq too well.

For acoustic, i think i like the Rode more.

I know I'm gonna get hate mail after saying this but to my ears the NT1 sounded muddy on your voice and quite boring. The Lewitt sounded perfectly balanced for your voice. Very tempted to get the Lewitt, as my voice is like Sinatra meets Chris Rea.

I just order Rode NT1

To me they sound like theyre on the same "quality" level. The Lewitt doesnt sound better it ist just clorser to my preferences. The Rode sounds like something I would like to use an equalizer on but has a very solid base.

Here in my country is very difficult to buy microphones for a fair price... NT 1 Sweatwater price: US$ 269 for example. Let’s use the Big Mac combo as a currency. Wel in USA I have to buy 21 bigmacs, here in Brazil I have to pay 100 bigmacs! It is insane!!! Cheers!

for her voice- lewitt indeed has brighter effect- wow... it made the nt1 sound muddy
