Hope this helps others. Received my Streamer X and had issues with Rode Central not being able to update the firmware even with the latest versions of everything. After hours installing, deleting and reinstalling (and no help from Rode customer service) on several computers, figured out it wasn't working because of a privacy setting. Privacy > input monitoring and turn the switch green on Rode Central and it will allow the software to update the firmware on Streamer X.

Grateful for your channel and for your work to figure this issue out! I came to the same conclusion yesterday after unboxing and getting my Streamer X up and running. The switch to 30fps in ECamm worked well for me on an M2 Mac Mini. Great work, as usual!

That definitely seems to be key. OBS' encoder options also play a pretty big role too. It's so weird though that a 24fps camera going into Ecamm set at 24fps looks choppy 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great video and thanks for sharing! I am personally considering the streamer X v.s. the Rodecaster Duo... Using the MKV option in OBS is the best way to go if you don't want to lose any video footage. You can also check the "Auto Remux" option in the advanced settings so you don't have to do anything to get the final MP4 file when you are done recording. This has saved me a few times while recording long tutorials. Using the MOV option leaves you vounderable to OBS crashing and curopting your video file. It is very upseting when it happens.

Great info! In obs use the non 30 fps setting though I think it’s 29.97 it helps with those occasional jitters in the frame rate. Also make sure your hdmi output on your camera is the right frame rate. On Sony cameras you need to set both the hdmi output and the internal recording frame rate the same or you’ll also look like you’re dropping frames. Also for some reason 60fps is buttery smooth and 30 fps just never quite looks as smooth as I would like.

hey man, same shiet, a7c plugged to streamer x, tried 5 hdmi cables, but i get occasional stutters (double frames) when recording 4k30, I tried EVERYTHING, every encoder, every setting on the camera and i just can't get rid of those jitters, any updates on your side? did you find a better solution?
@hackinghifi4247
@hackinghifi4247 6 ай бұрын
@@ArgoFowl I’d try 4k24p and see if that does it for you. Alternatively if you’re not streaming just record internally as well as sending out to the computer if it will let you do that. Then overlay your audio capture onto the other timeline and just use the native video. I ended up just recording at 1080p, less storage and most people are looking at it on a phone anyway so it really doesn’t matter to me. You could always upscale later if you want in davinci or whatever you use. If you’re streaming you wouldn’t be streaming at 4k anyway

Great video, thanks. I’m using Streamer X with a 4 in 1 HDMI switcher and it works well for doing videos when switching between cameras and capturing desktop all in 4K. No good for streaming though as there is a 5 to 10 second delay in switching based on source. ATEM ISO still has some uses, but I’m impressed.
@tombuck

I haven't used mine with a multi switcher, but it'll be interesting to see if Rode finds ways to add updates to work with delay options in different setups. Using the Streamer X by itself, I haven't had any issues with syncing.

Hi Tom. What HDMI cables are you using - I am finding these tiny stutters with the Streamer X. and my A7IV. I'm going through Ecamm live and I also have a ZV-E1 which can stream at 4k30 straight from USB-C. The ZV-E1 looks very smooth in ECamm, but when I switch the angle to the A7IV I'm using with the Streamer X and HDMI - it is just slightly choppy. I have tried many HDMI cables as it seems like a data transfer issue - but your video here looked quite smooth.

For OBS, even on a mac, is to use the advance tab, still select h.265 for codec, and for audio, select 24bit ALAC - something new to OBS and supports on on mac version as well. Still have CBR mode, anything from 20Kbps will be decent, play from there. You get great quality, better codecs and smaller file sizes. For the container format, dont use MOV, use fragmented MOV, this has the corruption recovery and more stable, not need to remux anything at all.

Yes, I changed both of them and it worked much better. They were both set to 24 before. My guess is that maybe the Streamer X itself defaults to 30, so that caused some issues? Or it could be that the software just prefers 30 in general.

Funny you should ask, I was just setting it up to use with a Teams meeting today. Other than making sure your frame rates are correct, it should be pretty plug and play. Tom, thank you for posting this. I just bought the Zoom H6 to use (primarily) as an AI with my XLR mic, but also for recording sound to sync with my video. So my questions are how can I use the H6 with the StreamerX? Do I even need the H6 if I have the StreamerX. The Streamer X would replace the H6 in this case. If you still need multiple inputs, then that’s where one of the Rodecasters would be good, but you then need a separate video capture card like a CamLink 👍

If I replace my curerent audio interface by the Streamer X, how do I connect and control my Genelec audio monitors, which are currently connected through balanced cables to my audio interface? 2.) How much gain can the audio interface provide for dynamic microphones and how can I monitor the microphone gain on the interface itself? 3.) Can I loop back the processed audio from my computer and what is the latency under optimal circumstances? 4.) How can I see, which function underlies the colored buttons on the right side - especially with 8 (Rhode says 64) different ones? Thank you in advance!

One important note specific to livestreaming, all of the live streaming platforms (KZfaq, twitch and even zoom and teams etc) are native 30/60fps, and will automatically convert any input to that, which isn't a perfect conversion, so for live streaming you should always do either 30 or 60, never 24 or 25/50. That's not as relevant to recorded video where they can accept other formats but I figured it's useful information anyway

This is not the case according to KZfaq Documentation. Direct form YT: Frame rate Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded. Common frame rates include: 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60 frames per second (other frame rates are also acceptable). Interlaced content should be deinterlaced before uploading. For example, 1080i60 content should be deinterlaced to 1080p30. 60 interlaced fields per second should be deinterlaced to 30 progressive frames per second. support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en#zippy=%2Ccontainer-mp%2Caudio-codec-aac-lc%2Cvideo-codec-h%2Cframe-rate%2Cbitrate%2Cvideo-resolution-and-aspect-ratio%2Ccolor-space Hope this sheds light 💡 I record and stream in 4k 24 a few times a week

I've seen a similar effect as the original footage when I forgot to match my camera's output frame rate to my recording frame rate. Would fit with why 24 was choppy, as you are effectively throwing away frames of your 30fps video to 'fit'. Usually you would also end up with audio sync issues but maybe there is some internal times sync correction from OBS/Ecamm
@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
What was weird here is that EVERYTHING was set to 24 (my camera, my HDMI output, and Ecamm). But it seems really clear that these applications really prefer 30fps. I didn't realize it would matter so much, especially since 24 is an available option.
@BenExcell
@BenExcell Жыл бұрын
I went frame-by frame though the video in Resolve and every 3-5 frames there are duplicate frames which kinda throws out my 30 down to 24 theory. Super weird because now I guess this is just all the recorders dropping frames... would be interesting to see if all the dup frames from each different recorder line up because if they do then the stutter would be from the camera

BEN PLEASE COME HERE AND LET'S CHAT ABOUT THIS, I can't find anyone who is talking about double frames. I am tired and have aged several years from trying to find a solution, tried 4 hdmi cables, every encoder setting (m1 max 32gb), every in camera setting, tried reinstalling obs, resetting camera and I STILL get these occasional jitters which you correctly identified double frames. I got a bit better results with Quicktime but still saw some doubleframes every 40sec-2min, streamer x is on 1.1.8 and obs is on 30.0.2, Mac is on Sonoma. Did you solve this, did you find out anything else? Would appreciate any input, peace and love@@BenExcell

Any reason you're using simple recording settings in obs? would of been great to see a sample of some prores encoder footage even if it ends in massive files. Just a quick question how is the audio video sync on this device as it doesnt appear to have output delay like the rcp2 . I know you can add a delay in obs but if there is an out of sync audio video it makes this a no go for zoom or teams meetings or just any software which doesnt allow a delay.

You can add a delay in the Rode software, but I haven’t had any sync issues so far. I tried to keep things as simple as possible with OBS since it’s really not my favorite program to use.

@@tombuck Another great video Tom. I’m no expert but having no HDMI delay is a groundbreaking technology. I was under the impression the HDMI signal itself took more time to reach or be processed by capture cards. If this Rode unit has no delay it means they have video capture technology nobody else has. I don’t understand why they don’t advertise that more?

24 FPS was designed for film projectors. 29.97 is what you should be using for all online work. The issue with the Base M1 8Gb/256GB HD Never buy any "M" mac without bumping up the storage at least 1 spot because of the motherboard has two slots for SSD HD if you only get 256GB it only uses 1 of those port, and so basically your HD runs at 1/2 speed.

I don't see any reason why not, you'd just need to run the guitar signal into an app for processing. If music is your main thing, you might want to check out the Boss Gigcasters. As long as every point of the chain uses 25 it’s not a problem, although 30 is more of a standard, 25 is for the old tv’s, moder’n computer monitors are usually 60 hertz and using 30 here is not a problem with good led lights but might cause flickering with flourescent lights

The thing I'm wondering, and I guess I'll need to ask Rode about, is if the Streamer X itself "forces" everything to 30fps? That would explain why I had stuttering issues even though my camera and software were set to 24. But I don't know why the other cards would've looked the same too then...

@@tombuck From what I’ve seen, including info on Røde’s own info pages about the Streamer X, it offers 4k30 and 2k60 streaming, and 4k60 / 2k120 passthrough, no mention of 24 or 25, so my guess is it’s «hardcoded» to those framerates, and from your results I’m guessing they don’t have any conversion for other framerates, so some frames are shown twice = stuttering - unless there are any settings in any of the apps they offer?

I've been having a lot of trouble updating Rode firmware myself lately. It might be worth re-installing Rode Central to see if that helps, and if not, then reach out to Rode's support. Since there isn’t really anyone looking at youtube videos on older ntsc tv’s there really isn’t any point i dallying around with the 23,98 is there? and most computer monitors are 60herz or better anyways, so 24 fps, although filmic, is not really helping, but 30 actually matches 60 and 120 in terms of a new image in the video every other or every fourth screen update - personally I love the smoothness of 24 (25 here in norway, since our power grid frequency matches 25fps so no flickering lights at 25 fps) - but for streaming I would say 30 fps is a better match for streaming since most monitors are around 60 or 120 update rate (unless the monitor is a variable refresh rate but that’s a whole different thing :)
@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын

@@tombuck It’s at least worth a try to see what results you get :) Back in the day I had access to a 72hz display, and since 24fps * 3 = 72 it had smooth playback with each frame being shown for 3 refresh cycles - when I was doing my first edits here in Norway from hi8 and dv footage we first had to de-interlace the 50 half-frames from 25fps footage to merge them into 25 full frames, using the right order of the interlaced frames, and then edit that and re-interlace it again, and if you got the order wrong it would look soooo bad, but done right, and on 50hz monitors it looked smooth. For the most part now there is loads of frame smoothing on most monitors so just playing back 24fps or 23.98 is no problem, but if you have a multi-tiered chain of several devices all you need is just one of them to be slightly off and it will get really choppy :/ Some devices might even «say» they are doing 23.98 but really they are doing 24, or the other way around - but a little bit of research on actuall framerates on all the pieces of your setup might reveal some info that might shed some light on this :)

I think, that streamer x gives 30fps feed. And if you record in 24fps, then ecamm/obs has to recode the feed, dropping extra 6 frames.
@keali.alexey
@keali.alexey Жыл бұрын
Maybe even like that. In camera in hdmi settings you set 24fps. Streamer x changes it to 30, adding 6 extra frames, obs/ecamm drops some other 6 frames to get back to 24. It would be my first guess. With elgato camlink I also had issues with 24fps. Set everything to 30 solves it all. 24 is for movie makers. Streamers use 30 or even 60.
@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
This is kind of what I’m thinking. It might default to 30, and so it wouldn’t matter if my camera and software were both set to 24. No biggie, but I really do wish Rode had made that more clear rather than calling it a simple plug and play device. I’m guessing lots of people are going to have the same problem I had.

In the original I followed all of Rode's directions and was happy with the results using the same software settings I've been using for ages. It even looked much better than anything I had streamed with before. But after uploading to KZfaq, the choppiness was much more noticeable, and of course that's what people saw right away and while I don't think it's a big issue for streaming, it's definitely a problem for recording. So I decided to experiment and share a follow up with my answers. To me, that's a pretty good example of "due diligence".
