Great video Damien. I’ve been thinking about upgrading my mic for the 1dx iii to this one. I have the rode ntg 3 for my c200 and rode videomic pro+ already but the small extras in this mic like the gain knob instead of just +20 dB / 0 dB setting and also the usb mic feature make it interesting. Thanks for sharing! Also, nice work with the graphics/animations!

Hi! So, I’m a complete sound-rookie and was hoping you could help me understand the real differences between XLR and 3.5mm microphones. From what I’ve been able to learn, the basic differences are: 1. XLR cables are balanced and a safer way to do long connections without having interferences; and 2. XLR mics need phantom power to work. But other than that, do XLR microphones output better sound quality compared to a good 3.5mm microphone? If the only real advance of XLR only comes with their cables… Wouldn't it be better to use a 3.5mm microphone (which tends to be more versatile, like the Rode Video NTG) and use and 3.5mm-to-XLR converter when you need to do a long connection to continue using the more trusted XLR cables?

I bought one of these but I've found that using it outside as much wind noise comes through the USB port as comes through the bare mic so using it outside is not an option. I am sending it back to RODE today as I suspect this might be a fault because there is no way I could use it like you on that skate rink, if it's in a blimp maybe but not with a wind shield.

@damiencooper
@damiencooper 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know as I've never tested the WS-11 but I can't imagine it being better tbh. Nope, I just keep it simple and plug in directly into the camera via an extension cable. As you can now let the mic do the majority of the work there's almost no need for an external recorder and the quality is way good enough for us.

Thanks for this review. I'm a newbie at all this, but need to record training videos in a pretty "bouncy" room. Can this mic handle that? Most reviewers say that shotgun mics aren't good inside unless the room has been significantly deadened. I'm in a situation where I can't do that. I'd love to get this mic, but not if I'm walking into getting too much of a boxy sound from my voice bouncing all over the place. Thoughts?

Thanks for the great review! Quick question. What would you envisage the Pros and Cons to be when using the VideoMic NTG as a proper Boom mic, being moved around by a boom operator on a boom pole etc., specifically having it connected in the way that Rode describes in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptGFndGB0tOziac.html, using the Rode Wireless Go. Obviously not appropriate for a Hollywood feature film! I'm thinking when recording audio for a company promo, documentary interviews, etc.

Damien! Thanks for the video. Quick question. I bought the Videomic NTG and I use it through my Canon 90D. I’ve been pulling my camera gain all the way down as low as it will go (1 notch up from 0) and then adjusting my NTG from there so as to get good levels on my subject without peaking. Usually ends up being about 11db (ish) on the mic itself and then about 3 ft from my subject. My issue is sometimes I get a sort of distortion/rattling sound when they get loud. I've prepared for their volume with my levels ahead of time and I’m not peaking at all levels wise but there is still a distortion when they get loud that I can't explain. I know you have an accent but Did you say “one penis length?” Lmao depends on the penis lol seriously tho, Found you when I was looking at reviews for the bmpcc 6k and I’ve been digging every video I have seen. I wanna be like you when I grow up 😉
