I bought one of these last year while in the USA. It is a great locomotive. My previous HO DD40AX locos were the Bachmann DCC versions, they ran ok but are not even close to the quality of the Athearn version. Great review. Mine runs exactly the same.

I have one of the first Genesis versions with sound and it runs great and sounds amazing. I got lucky and horse traded for mine with a local hobby shop so the $400 price gage then was only $125 for what I paid for the items I traded. They hold up fine on the club layout, never had mine derail in any way.

Nice review. Nice engine. I noticed some LEGO in the background, and what appears to be at least on MP Transformer. I've been out of the hobby for quite some time, and am thinking about getting back into it, but feel priced out, as you said.

Very impressive locomotive product review, the UP DDA40X is an impressive diesel model & Athearn should start producing locomotives with metal shell bodies instead of plastic for increased weight to support extra pulling capability.

I received my 6910 last Friday from FDH North Carolina. My biggest worry are the same as yours ........ Is it without any damage or annoying imperfections ? Fortunately the answer in my case is "YES" ! This loco has enough breakable and delicate parts like handrails, steps, windscreen wipers you name it. For $501 you may expect so. I had to add another $73 for shipping to Australia. I saw a very annoying one on yours which is a missing grill from the first fan on the roof, and of course the flickering number boards. That last issue I can only check when I put it on a layout that I don't have myself. I hope you will be able so sort your issues out with Athearn or your dealer. The wait is now for the BLI E6 Atlantic which I have on pre-order. Cheers and also best of luck with your eyes ! Jan, Australia

You are right about what you get or don't get from Athearn. I have 2 RS-3s that completely fell apart, but also have some engines that do b work well. Try to avoid them as much as possible.

Very insightful video Matt, as I like the advice at the end about responsibility, which is what we need to remember in this hobby. What versions of the new SD70ACE are you interested in. They are estimated to arrive at Otter Valley Railroad in Canada (a hobby shop in Canada I buy from), June 24th, 2022 this year. So June is the best bet.

Cool. Neat locomotive. I've been thinking about getting one. It should have lit markers on the front and back. Its f24 or 25 for those I think. There is also ground lights on the front. Not sure about the rear though.

just wanted to correct you on the idea that the DD40 is basically 2 SD45s in one locomotive. it is in fact 2 SD40-2s. the SD45s had 20 cyl. prime movers @ 3600 HP. the DD40 has two 16 cyl. prime movers, same as in the SD40-2, however they were uprated from 3000 to 3300 HP for the DD40. & also the DD40s were geared for 90 mph.

Is this model able to do 22" radius curves? Been thinking on getting one but want to make sure first.

The Athearn Genesis AC4400CW has been announced too, it will take another year to arrive, but I think it will be worth it.

Can't deal with the flickering number boards. Might be more than a "simple" problem...please let us know if you find the issue...👍

I don't know how you missed this, but the dynamic brake fan that's over the first engine hood has a missing circular mesh piece. Considering how visually obvious it is, in my opinion that's a big problem

Yeah it is missing the front cover over the fans. How could you not see that? Now I know what everyone was talking about the comment section. Even this blind guy can see that it is missing. Did they send you a replacement?

600 AMPS at 50MPH still don't know any other engine that can do that. Some were rated at 7000HP for a while!

One of the radiator fan grills is missing on the fron top of the locomotive

$500 for a plastic ho locomotive no way. But it's cheap in comparison to a Lionel Vision steam locomotive that's $2,800. For $500 that locomotive better come with a brass body and metal couplers. They stuff the regular locomotive full of expensive Electronics just like Lionel and charge a top dollar price for it I wouldn't pay $500 for an old gauge dd40 nevermind an HO scale model. The old athearn blue box dd40 was affordable. Do they make one without all the electronics or not? I would hope it would be a more reasonable price but probably not. My god when did model railroading and any scale get to be a top-dollar occupation?

Longer locomotive are very uncomfortable to run. The long frame is very stiff and unforgiving and you feel every spot in the track that is not perfect. That's one of the reasons why it was not continued. From what I understand the ALCO 636 was also very rough riding unpopular with Cruz for that and also because they place the horn right over the engineer seat and it was very annoying so loud right above your head. You could move the location of the horn but you couldn't make it ride any better.
