I adore this song, and I listened to it for a year before I knew the real story. Rodney wrote this song when his mentor Guy Clark was dying. The first verse is from Guy's perspective, the second was from Rodney's perspective, and the third was from the perspective of Guy's wife Susanna. Rodney asked Guy if he wanted to co-write it with him but he wasn't in good enough shape to. Rodney also said he got the bus stop line from Billy Joe Shaver.

Rodney was a very popular country singer songwriter in the early 90s when he was married to Roseanne. This song seems very autobiographical. Some of his top hits were I Couldn’t Leave You if I Tried and She’s Crazy for Leaving. He also did a duet with Roseanne- It’s Such a Small World. We saw him in concert after this was recorded and it was just him with an acoustic guitarist.

I saw Rosanne in a concert in the 90s that she did the same way - just her and a guitarist. One of my all time favourite concerts

One of my favorite songs ever. I could see it "speaking to you" as you put it. Also I googled it and Rodney did write it and Roseanne Cash is his ex wife Rodney was on his way to super stardom as a great vocalist and guitarist till Vince Gill showed up. He still had a great career but if Vince stuck to rock I think Rodney wouldn't been a household name. Great job 🤘

So much truth in one song. Life goes by fast. And, it aint over until it's over. This song is a great example of simplicity in writing and performing. The nod to the Clarks is super and add Rodne's ex-wife who knows him all too well, and the vocal talent of John Paul White....Wow!!!!

Hi Don, couldn't tell from your comments if you're very familiar with JPW. If not, you might enjoy some of his stuff from a duo he was in called The Civil Wars. His partner in the duo was Joy Williams, and she has a great voice. If you're interested in trying something from them I'd say start with "Barton Hollow" or "Billie Jean." I know, who cares about the song Billie Jean? It doesn't fit the channel! Just try it if you feel like taking a chance. They change it up a little, and their vocal performances are great. Take care...
