I saw "Searching For Sugarman" a few weeks ago, having never heard of Rodriguez before being invited to see the movie with a friend - if only I had discovered him as a teenager! What a sadness that his music never proliferated in the US before now. And amazing how his music was truly the heartbeat of a generation of South Africans, much as Dylan was in the US, without anyone the wiser - for 40 years. Finally the entire world can hear this remarkable, overlooked talent. Thank you, Rodriguez!

You probable wouldn't have liked him as much if he had been as popular as, say, Dylan ... also it wouldn't have added to his legend and mystery if he had been huge back in his day.

Really nice!!!! What a voice! Intact, crisp, beautiful. And the lyrics? Still strong, and timeless. We've been deprived of a great musician. Had the US music industry, and the media, not ignored him, he would have been a tough competition to Dylan. Alas, it happens to so many. I'm glad someone thought of, and found Rodriguez. Beats a lot of junk music out there.

Always a joy to discover new music, and this music has a timeless, mystical, prophetic air to it that honestly puts everything coming out these days from the record companies to shame. And these songs are thirty years old. Thank you Rodriguez for some honest, moving songcraft.

I think you are absolutely spot on with that assessment. His songs create a visual like only the best musicians can do. He sounds like a drive through Detroit or Cincinnati or Milwaukee in the 70s

Wow this is amazing! To the hell with the music industry. So much "swill on the radio" and so much great music" not on the radio." You are a music genius and the lyrics Wow. Better then Dylan. Salud and thank you

Much better than Dylan, which is why Dylan had to sell his soul.. Rodriguez chose to keep his soul and give his temporary body up to the community while working on abandoned houses

I feel so privileged to have been introduced to Rodriguez's music! There are AT LEAST 4 songs from his first album that I can't get out of my head. And timeless too...I get sort of sad inside though when I think of the pure genuine character that he is and was taken advantage of and never told how famous he had become in SA. I'm thankful for at least being able to listen to his music now.
@kevlength11 жыл бұрын
Does anybody think that possibly by now, this great man would still be alive if he had become "famous" rock and roll style? Such a shy and unassuming person as Rodriguez is, it's probably a blessing He never rose to fame and fortune, He would have hated it. Watching this and hoping for true happiness for Rodriguez is all I want. The man has done it. Take a bow Mr. Rodriguez. Live a long and fruitfull life with your family and freinds....You deserve it.

kevin larkin Hi Kevin Just wanted to say that I really don't think fame would have changed him He's such a humble shy person that he doesn't seem to me to have an addictive nature I think he would have still fallen in love with his girl from Dearborn and possibly written more fantastic songs for our pleasure Great song writer and musician but no info on his wife Would've loved at least a picture And what happened to the money trail?? Did he receive it??

We had a dream in the 60’s, we wanted to change the world in a more just place for everybody…create a better society, then drugs start sipping into our minds…our dreams got distorted and then we became a caricature of marketing, Sixto, (named because he was child #6) Rodriguez survived untouched, that’s why he still relevant today as he was in the 60’s and 70’s…Young societies, less affected by drugs, made him and he still a LEGEND…still our original voice….Thanks Rod.!!!

So far only 2 people have 'disliked' it.. and does giving this a 'thumbs-down' even mean you dislike it? I think that true artists attract both saints and sinners and all in between. Indeed, people 'in-between' far outnumber the number of 'likes'. For this reason, I disagree with the second comment on this video.

■ 𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗭: «𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗚𝗘: 𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗗» - 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁: Rodrìguez, how old are you? - 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗶̀𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘇: You know,‘There’s only one age: alive or dead.’ - 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁: Many of the songs on Cold Fact and Coming From Reality deal explicitly with life in Detroit during the late 1960s and early ’70s. What was Detroit like during the time he was writing those songs? - 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗶̀𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘇: The troubles in the city, the riots in Detroit, in ’67, those were the things, Let’s see, we had the Vietnam War, which is the backdrop, the students were burning their draft cards resisting the draft, that kind of thing. We had conscription. The students were moving to Canada, stuff like that. The protests were going on. All these things were happening. Detroit is an industrial city, post-industrial, they were in the thick of it. If you remember the slogans of that time, ‘If it’s good for General Motors, it’s good for the country’. “I remember, in 1964, three students went down south to help a vote of registration and they were killed in Mississippi. One of them was James Chaney and there was two more, I believe. There was another lady called Viola Liuzzo. She was a Detroit lady, a white lady from the suburbs, and she went down to help a vote of registration and she was killed in Alabama, in ’65. So Detroit has supplied some of these issues, from the northern cities to down South. They might be obscure people but there certainly were part of the 1970s, ’60s, Civil Rights movement. Civil Rights and women’s rights was championed at that time. So those kinds of things were at least fresh then. The kids were starting to have tie-dye shirts, writing on their T-shirts. Now it’s a big fad. But at that time, T-shirts were generally blank. Martin Luther King walked hands in hands with Walter Reuther, labour, the United Auto Workers, and priest and clergy, of course. But the thing is that labour Detroit has always been for the working people, so that’s what my orientation is.” ■ 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗡 𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗭 (𝗗𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗘𝗥): «He lives a very Spartan life.” She continued, “I almost want to call it Amish. He once told me there’s three basic needs - food, clothing and shelter. Once you get down to that level, everything else is icing.» - 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁: So what will Sixo do with all his money? - 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗶̀𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘇: Well, he plans on giving it to his daughter and close friends. That’s his philosophy. He takes great pleasure in giving it away, especially to people that supported him when he wasn’t a big commercial success. I do really wish he’d spend some of the money on himself, though.” ■ 𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗭 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟱: «𝗜 ran for mayor twice, for state representative twice and for the city council three times,” Rodriguez confirms. “I describe myself as a musical political. I’m born and bred out of Detroit. Detroit is an interesting place. You’ve got to be from somewhere. I’m going to get back there for the Doctorate and I’m going to file to run for mayor. I can explain. To run for mayor, you need a minimum of 515 signatures of valid voters, up to 1,000, they won’t accept any more than that. So I’m going to file and see what happens. I’m petitioning now through other people, so when I get back there for those few days, I’m going to file for office and see what happens.»

Tours are funded and promoted by record labels when they deem an artist worthy based on their perception of commercial appeal. Was he supposed to fund his own tour using his construction labor wages? He played regularly in Detroit, where travel costs were not a consideration.
