Calling bugling bull elk with cow calls is a tried and true method for success. However, not all cow calling is created equal! This video is just ONE of the more than 30 HOURS of educational videos found in the Elk Module at www.roehuntingresources.com, and shows how Chris puts the principles, strategies, tactics, and vocalizations he talks about in the Elk Module to use in the field!

I believe more and more that what, why and when you say things are paramount to be successful most of the time. There is every once in awhile that what I call "a Random", or an elk that will come in to any old call just to check things out, but for the most park how and what you are communication is huge to consistent success and opportunities. This video demonstrates it to a TEE!

Great tutorial, thanks! Every summer I watch people calling elk just to get ready for elk season, but your video was hands down better than most! When you can speak their language it helps so much when it comes time to close the deal!

Is it Good idea to use cow elk in heat urine for the scent?
@RoeHuntingResources
@RoeHuntingResources 8 жыл бұрын
I do not; if you set-up correctly, they'll never get downwind of you until it's too late! LOL! ...also, be careful - in some States (like AZ) elk urine is illegal to use.

I really enjoyed this video. I think by working this bull into range made it a successful hunt..... regardless of not tagging him. You wrre wise to pass up that shot. You are a true sportsman.

Hey Chris. What caller did you use? And the ones you didn't show? For elk. And will it work for Rosevelt elk? I'm new. And I'm hunting this year. Modern.

Last year I called in a nice bull, I lured him away from his cows. He came charging down the hill towards me I got set up and he saw there were no cows and left. He was too far away and I had a large opening between us. I think I called too much. How can I get them to keep coming? Should I have gone towards him more so we didn't have the meadow between us? He never spooked, I think he just didn't want to leave his cows for too long.

Great video indeed, Chris! I'm a first time elk hunter from Wisconsin heading out west for a DIY OTC archery elk hunt with a couple buddies in September. This video is very helpful and provides a lot of great insight. One question I have, it seems a lot of the calling strategies I've read about and watched videos on recommend cutting the bull off with a challenge / aggressive bugle immediately after he responds to your cow calls. Just curious what your thoughts are on that strategy and why you chose not to deploy that strategy here? Thanks in advance!

That tactic works in very specific situations, and with very specific bulls/herds/locations. ...most of the time, folks talking about that tactic are hunting in very thick cover, and are trying to MAKE the bull react and "charge in" those last few yards for a shot. I have a very different philosophy in calling from those folks, and talk about it quite a bit in the Elk Module of the RHR website. That tactic can push bulls away - especially bulls like this one - so I only use it when and IF I see a strategic need to do so.

I was watching this video on the gravel road next to my house and in the neighboring alfalfa field next to my house there are about 100 elk hanging out and they were responsive to the video . it's such a beautiful blessing to be in the presence of God's creation

would like to know the same thing...i see up above you were using primos and used two kinds does that mean you carry multiple of those plastic reed type calls...do you find them to be more realistic vs a traditional reed call I have a wayne carlton plastic long ranger call just trying to be the most effective at this
@RoeHuntingResources
@RoeHuntingResources 8 жыл бұрын
+Bluegill20 - at that time, I used the Primos Hyper Lip Single and Double. These days I use the "Matriarch" and "Trophy Wife" single reeds by Steve Chappell, and the Primos Hyper Lip Double. ...
@RoeHuntingResources
@RoeHuntingResources 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Olmsted - I DO find them to be more realistic and versatile for ME. I think you can get better results with an open reed style call for many cow vocalizations than you can with a diaphragm.

I can't ever get the bulls to come all the way in when I'm calling and shooting they usually get 50 to 100 yards away, Circle me and then shut up

My guess is you need to tweak two things in the future: 1) the calling strategies you use (vocalizations you use, and the imagery you're portraying), and 2) taking time to identify "The Doorway" a little better when choosing your set-ups. Piles of lessons in those things in the Elk Module on our Website. Tweak those two things, and you'll pull them right to your toes!
