Alexander Cortez: It depends on your type of play. I´m a club player and if I use synthetic (gauge 16) gut in crosses and mains I´ll break in 2 hours of play. With poly on the mains and synthetic gut on the crosses I´ll break strings on about 6-8 hours. I play heavy topspin on both sides. A friend of mine (ex-tennis teacher), who plays flat, breaks strings (poly) every 20-30 hours. All center hits. Consider that if you I hit the ball with the frame, you can break a string at any moment. It depends of the string tension too (I use very low tensions, wich cause the strings to move more and wear out rapidly).

Carl Marks: if you're a string breaker (like me), I suggest you to buy a stringing machine (a good basic one could cost you $150), buy string in 720ft reels (instead of single packages). Using polyester on mains extends the durability of cordage. I've done this for many years. If you consider that a string job could cost minimum $20-30 at your local pro, and you break strings frecuently, soon you'll be saving a lot of money.

I've been considering buying a stringing machine for a while now and starting to string my own racquets. Like you said I'd be saving money on the labor. And at the same time I'd have full control of my string job and won't have to worry about someone else messing up my tension.

So he kind of does what you suggested, but he can help more children by selling the racquet.

AtticussAtticuss I could clearly see silver/grey strings in the crosses. Natural Gut mains and Alu Power Rough crosses. This combination is absolutely sublime, if you can afford to restring 2-3 racquets every few weeks. I play with an older 95sq" 16x19 with this hybrid and it is superb if you're accurate, but not very durable, mainly due to the Power Rough shredding the Gut on just about every shot. You can try replacing the Gut with a multifilament string like NXT and you may get a little longer out of it, but it all depends on your stroke. Peace out tennis lovers.

what Dave said, but also you can try to put the poly on the mains and gut in the cross, it will play more like a full bed of poly but you'll get more time out of each set.

itubeutude yes they do wear out. the flex increases and you lose control. at a top pro level like Roger's they will just change them according to a fixed time schedule because they simply can't afford even the slightest variation in play and Wilson provides that many frames accordingly. most rec players below satellite level will not even know the difference. I replace mine every year based on 3 X per week play. frame life is completely dependent on how hard you hit, racket abuse, frequency of play, proper storage, and correct stringing.

Very true. Also racquets warp all the time due to extreme heat, cold, and humidity. Playing in the Southern USA myself, I absolutely cannot leave my racquets in my car due to the extreme swings in weather and humidity. I learned that lesson the hard way... :(

It produces a huge amount of power : if he had low tension the balls would fly off the court, the higher tension gives him more control. When he had the 90 inch racquet his tension was around 21-22kg to give him more power

He probably used these low tensions with his old smaller racquet (90 sq in), with a larger frame (97 sq in) you would want a higher tension to keep the ball on the court.

DING DING DING DING you're cluing in on why he is able to kill the ball now. Even back in 2009 this was controversial. We have P1 saying they string his sticks at 55 pounds and yet we have his actual match racquets showing labels with 44 pounds. This is a GIGANTIC difference

yes but mate.. think about it.. you wouldnt suddenly shift from 90 to 97 AND jump from 44lbs to 59lbs.. that is beyond insanity. The only logical course would be to move from 90 to 97, retain the tension you are so familiar with, learn to adjust with the racquet.. get the kinks worked out and then once you're fully comfortable THEN you can make the tension change but keep THIS in mind. As a top pro.. changing from 90 to 97 would take time to adjust.. we saw him have problems with the adjustment. Yet we never saw any adjustment issues going from 44 to 59. Why is that? Because he switched during his 6 month absence. Watch the Nadal/Fed IW highlights. Watch him simply MURDER the ball. Show me ANY video from before January 2017 where he got that type of pace and pop on the ball. I went back 10 years and could not find a single instance. String change happened in the down time where he had time to practice and adjust. That means he has been using his old tension even since the 97 frame change in 2013. Absolutely fucking mindblowing

Journalists, racquet brands, tennis equipment suppliers, etc. I just watched a video that showed that Federer wears a modified version of "Nike Vapor" shoes. It seemed a "Nike Air Oscillate" modified to have the appearence of a "Nike Vapor". It is likely that Federer doesn't even use Wilson strings. In the end, companies wanna get some kind of advantage. What the experts tell to everyone: use the equipment (racquet, string, shoes) and the specifications that is more comfortable for you, regardless of the propaganda.
