I'm not sure I quite understand the "spreads your lines more" argument. Looks like from the front rod to the back rod is about 12' if that is a 17' boat. So you have a spread of 12'. If you long lined with the boat going forward and used different length rods like most do.. From 5' in the back to 14'ers in the front, you would be covering 14' off the port, 14' off the starboard, and right down the middle with the shorty rods, and everywhere in between with an 8, a 10, and a 12' rod too (if allowed). So if your boat is 8 foot wide, that's a coverage of 36' vs the 12' here. I guess I just don't see the advantage, which is probably why you don't see it done very often
