The BEST explanation of the vital differences between the two SD card types! I am much obliged to you, sir, for helping me understand the cryptic (for me) markings on the different SD cards! Such a relief when ordering the right SD memory cards for my Canon camera! Thank you thank thank you a million times! Great video with an obvious and accurate explanation! Stay blessed! Greetings from Sweden! 👍💯👍💯👍👌🙏💖

After a decade long pause I'm back to photography, just bought a Cannon M6 Mark II and opened it and it said "no SD card". Which made me remember that I also need to buy an SD card. :-) Went to Amazon and was overwhelmed by all the options out there! Mostly I was curious about whether I need an UHS2 or UHS1. You explained everything so clearly well in good detail. Even answered the questions I didn't know I should have asked. Now ordering a SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card and its reader with good conscious. Thanks a lot for sharing your expertise and helping our newcomers like me. ^_^ Now I'm gonna dig into your channel for video codec, file format videos. :-)

Thanks for this very informative video. I've recently upgraded from the M6 to the M6 mark II and am constantly discovering new things about it. I just learned today that I can charge the battery in camera with any cheap Anker PD charger instead of the 130 EUR canon charger (mind blown). Now I finally understand the memory cards specs as well. Thanks again for this video! ❤

For the M5 and R, I like the Lexar Pro 1667x cards. They are technically UHS-II cards but with the write speed and cost of UHS-I cards. In other words, they are cheap and fast enough to keep up with my cameras. The bonus is that the read speed is on par with UHS-II cards; so, I can offload to my computer or iPad really fast.

I had one (Lexar 1000x, V60, 128GB) card already, bought for computer use with a UHS-I PCI card reader. I figured it would max out the 104MB/s UHS-I read speed. The computer is now enjoying a newer fast 256GB (UHS-I) card, so I figured I might as well put the UHS-II one into the only device I have that has that interface. I probably wouldn’t have bought UHS-II just for the camera. It seems like a fast UHS-I (104MB/s) should be able to handle writes at 60-90MB/s without the faster interface. UHS-II goes to 312MB/s. An easy to find advantage of UHS-II is that if your computer has a II reader, it’s likely your high speed cards support READ speeds over 104MB/s. Which would make a difference if you fill up large cards and want to save some time. Sadly, the camera doesn’t support USB 3, so you have to remove the card to download over about 25MB/s USB 2 speeds.

@@RogerAVHansen If I get a UHS-II reader (newer macs have them built in) I'd use it, but it is a missed opportunity that the camera has UHS-II hardware but not USB 3 over the USB-C connector. If I get a new Lexar card, I see it's sometimes bundled with their II reader for about $25 extra. Not bad. Still, the main benefit seems to be faster buffer clearing, but only if the card supports writing at faster than UHS-I speeds. I'm not clear how (or if) it helps to have a

@@radellaf When it comes to video there is no need for a UHS-II card in the M6 mark II, you get the best video quality the camera has to offer with a UHS-I V30 card 😊 But for photography you will experience better buffer clearing as you mentioned 😊 So the DC card reader in the new Macs is a USH-II reader? I have been wondering about that. I've seen people on twitter complaining about low transfer speeds on the new Mac Studio. Wonder if that is a UHS-II reader also....
@radellaf
@radellaf 2 жыл бұрын
@@RogerAVHansen Supposedly they are II on “UHS‑II (Mac Studio introduced in 2022, MacBook Pro introduced in 2021, iMac introduced in 2020, and iMac Pro only)” I have a 2015 iMac. Only using the built in reader as a game SSD for World of Warcraft (99% read not much write). For the camera I prefer a slot somewhere near the _front_ of the computer. I’ve upgraded that to a 256 and it just turned out that the 128 I got a good deal on before was a 1000x V60 UHS-II Lexar. So… great, now I have something in the house that can maybe benefit (depending if the card actually has fast enough write speeds for it to matter on the bursts). I will definitely be playing with the raw burst mode, though for most purposes I may do just as well pulling video frames.

I use a 64 GB SanDisk Extreme on my EOS M50. I bought it as the my old cards could not do 4K. At the time it was some 8 € cheaper than the Extreme Pro. If the card is too slow you just cannot shoot 4K, it stops on seconds.

Hey… you forgot to mention the 5th speed number on the card: the “x” rating, which is relative to the ancient CD-ROM spec of .15MB/s. Read speed guarantee only, I guess, and probably just for sequential read.
@RogerAVHansen
@RogerAVHansen 2 жыл бұрын
My focus is on SD cards and how they work with cameras 😊 What you mentioned here is not that relevant in that case, but nice to know 😊
@radellaf
@radellaf 2 жыл бұрын
@@RogerAVHansen How is the "x" rating not as relevant as the "MB/s" rating? They're pretty much the same thing. Lexar's UHS-II card says "1667x" and "250MB/s", for instance. I guess the Sandisk Extreme doesn't have an "x" printed on it but many others do.

I was thinking that the Canon EOS M6 Mark II provides 4K videos. If so, should I be getting the UHS II? If I understand you correctly it sounds like UHS I is for 1080p videos, but I'm sure the UHS I is much cheaper if you think it doesn't matter.

Great video guy. I'm going to plunk down and get this or the X-S10. Can you tell me if I can just power this on and start shooting? I ask because I ride a motorcycle and enjoy pulling out my GoPro with my left hand, powering up and start shooting with the same hand while riding. I would find it bothersome if I had to power this or the X-S10 up and acknowledge a message holding with one hand and pressing a button with the other, as I've heard you have to do with this camera. Thanks man!
@RogerAVHansen
@RogerAVHansen 3 жыл бұрын
You can power the M6 mark ii on and start recording without doing anything else. But if you plan on filming while riding a motorcycle I think the GoPro is a better choice because of the image stabilization in the GoPro. The M6 mark ii only use digital IS, and it’s nothing compared to the IS in the GoPro (GoPro Hero 7 and newer). What you also need to take in to consideration is lenses and lenscaps. You need to take of the lenscap before start shooting, you don’t need to do this with the GoPro 😊

I'm getting Soo confused between all cameras .. I want to film cars and take pictures so I thought of buying Sony a6400 but it has very bad rolling shutter... N this is the camera I think has good performance for the price... But should I wait for canon to release new 800$ full frame camera next year ?... Which is the best film camera with decent picture option in 1000$ range.?
@RogerAVHansen
@RogerAVHansen 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any experience with the Sony A6000 line of cameras, but I’ve seen a lot of good content created with them so they are probably great. But right now looking at Canon, in that price range you mentioned, your best options, in my opinion, is the M6 mark II and the EOS RP. If you need a camera right now, get a camera now. Learn what you can, maybe earn some money from it and later on maybe you can upgrade to the new 800$ full frame camera that’s in the works 😊

You cover a lot of basic concepts but missed the original sd speed descriptor of “x” which is still used by some brands. I disagree about your conclusion that UHS-I with V30 is enough. Even the lowly EOS RP has a SLOW 5 fps shutter speed. It’s raw files are about 24MB in size. So it’s write speed is 120MB/sec. With a fast UHS-II card it has infinity buffer. With the UHS-I card you recommend, it will overrun the buffer in just 2 seconds. Even a rank amateur who puts the camera in sports mode and takes pics of their kids soccer game will notice that difference.
