After Hornsby passed in early 1963, he was buried in an out of the way place called Hornsby's Bend. I remember my parents spent the better part of a Sunday afternoon looking for a his grave, so that I could pay my respects to this great man. I was 11. No GPS back then. His headstone was quite simple. Name,, birth and death dates (1896-1963) and crossed bats carved into the stone. My parents were heros to me too that day.

Despite the fact that he didn't steal a lot of bases, he was considered one of the fastest players in the majors during his prime. He had a lot of inside the park homers prior to the dead ball which is partly attributable to his great speed.
@danmalic66886 жыл бұрын
There is a great true story about a rookie pitcher complaining to plate umpire for calling balls on some throws, which the pitcher thought were strikes. Hornsby was the batter. The ump called the pitcher over and informed him, that Mr. Hornsby would let him (the pitcher) know, as soon as he threw a strike.

Hornsby, like so many hitters of his time, preached hitting off the back leg. I'm sure he believed that sincerely. But the films tell the truth. Hornsby generated power with a strong weight shift. Note how his swing ends with his weight far over his front leg

How would Hornsby fare today? None of those old time speed ballers like Smokey Joe Wood, Lefty Grove or Walter Johnson likely threw 100mph. Pitchers back then pitched the full nine innings and lasted decades. They threw perhaps 90+. There are kids in high school today who throw 90mph. For instance Matt Harvey threw 90 in high school. That's why their arms fall off nowadays.

I grew up rooting for Stan and the Cardinals and Rogers Hornsby was a distant memory but I don't believe he ever got the credit he deserved. What would he have done( I know he had the hightest BA in baseball) if he had stayed with the Cardinals or gone to the Yankees instead of all the weak teams he played for where he was the best player on the field. Maybe he was the greatest. Greater than Cobb, Ruth , Mays, Williams, and maybe as good as Stan the Man.

Lol!!!!However, the team is angry with Charlie Brown for this, and Charlie Brown finally decides to rip up the contract made for the trade (which is just as well, as the five players Patty was going to trade declared they'd give up baseball before they'd ever play for Charlie Brown! Ty Cobb I read it was low to mid 90s but still fast yes.yeah there were your elites but most were 80mph pitchers. Even in the 60s to 90s they didn’t throw to hard , now most can hit 95-100
@tycobb54526 жыл бұрын
Richard Kucklinski Ruth himself was high nineties,and feller was over a hundred plus even the guys who weren't were still not 80s-and throwing a baseball that dips and dives can get batters out,without being 115 mph-finesse works- it also takes discipline to hit .400-good hand to eye coordination, and bat speed as well as patience.
