It was the first one I found on this process and I was just blown away, thought no way, how does the sub image actually go THROUGH the vinyl like that - but I tried it the same day and made my first one! I live in MN and searched several stores. Only found a few of the ones with designs on them already - BUT if you soak them a bit it is easy to take a razor blade or knife to the paper/vinyl (not sure what they used, almost like a coated paper) and remove it. I tried to order from Dollar Tree website but no clear ones in stock there either when I checked last night, but they have a variety pack that has some clear and some designed. I did my first one the other day after watching this video and it was so easy!

Hello and what an awesome tutorial! Do you know if image could also be transferred onto matte printable vinyl? I also have a mug press and thought about possibly sublimating on wine bottles, feel free to share your thoughts on that. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate.
@rogersshop
@rogersshop 2 жыл бұрын
Printable vinyl (print & cut) vinyl is made differently from regular permanent outdoor vinyl and the colors tend to bleed and not stay sharp when attempting to sublimate on it. I tried this once and the results were poor. Same with HTV............Not something to sublimate to. Sublimating to glass, such as a wine bottle, will require a base to receive the dye. This can be a polyester coating, clear permanent outdoor vinyl (hard to find, but they do make it), or a white vinyl base.

Since I do print & cut with the Cricut, 1 can I just cut my design the max the Cricut will allow & the vinyl the same size, Or just cut the vinyl the size of the DT trivet?
@rogersshop
@rogersshop 2 жыл бұрын
Cut the vinyl the size of the cutting board or it will look odd. Print and cut may not allow the full width needed for the glass since it is limited by width of 8-1/2", then limited further by registration marks. I cut my vinyl on a Cricut Maker, but design and print the sublimation from Inkscape. Complex designs are done in other software, then imported into Inkscape for printing.

Since I have used my big heat press to heat acrylic so I can bend it, sublimating on it (with a laminate layer) would be risky, if it works at all. The acrylic may warp or melt. I doubt that you could sublimate direct to the acrylic without a substrate to accept the dye.

A couple of questions. 1) how did you print from cricut with the black cut line around image? 2) does the sublimanation show through the white vinyl, so you see it from the otherside/top of cutting glass? And is that permanent vinyl?

I do not print from Cricut Design Space. I only use the Cricut to cut the vinyl. I use Inkscape for most of my graphic designs. The sublimation transfer passes through the vinyl and is seen from the front. Yes, use permanent vinyl. (NOT HTV)

If I use clear vinyl will the glass stay clear on parts where there’s not a picture? For example, if I want to do a 2x2 photo on a 4x4 plaque, will the plaque still be translucent where the photo isn’t applied? And the same for words. If I print out text on a sub printer and apply to acrylic, it’s always translucent. But, I want to keep the acrylic translucent and only opaque where my text and/or photo is.

Yes, it will stay translucent, or clear, depending on the type of vinyl used. Some are crystal clear and some not-quite-so-much. I'm going to be making a video soon on sublimating to clear vinyl over glass.

Is there another product I can use instead of Rapid Tac on my glass. Will Windex work. Thanks
@rogersshop
@rogersshop Жыл бұрын
You can also use plain water. NO soap. Do not use Windex as it will affect the adhesive. Use of windex to clean the glass is fine, but do not use it to position the vinyl.

Hey Mr. Roger. I'm trying to learn this process but I have a small problem. When I measure something.... say that Square cutting board....I am not the best at reading a tape measure, but when I do get say 2 inches and 6 lines past....I don't know how to translate that in to a decimal for my cricut. I know I may sound dumb, I just don't know how. Do you know any tips that may help me learn to measure and translate to decimal? Thank you so much and any time you take to answer would be greatly greatly appreciated.
