Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Happy May the 4th to all! Today we get to go back to a galaxy far, far away and experience a thrilling tale of rebel heroes, daring missions, and all the bravery and sacrifice it took to have a chance in defeating the Empire.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016) follows a group of unlikely heroes who band together to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. We already know how things go down thanks to "A New Hope" but this film recontextualizes and allows us to appreciate the bravery and sacrifice these rebels showcased in order to give the good guys a shot at destroying the iconic Death Star.
This is an untold story that truly enriches the other films and ties everything together neatly. The characters in this film are amazing as well. From the fearless Jyn Erso played wonderfully by Felicity Jones to Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) these characters feel fearless and brave despite the odds and remind us that we should all stand for what is right. The return of the enigmatic Darth Vader is also a plus! He was absolutely ruthless in this!
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the different elements that made this film so enjoyable. From the amazing cinematography by Greig Fraser to the fantastic score by Michael Giacchino there's lots to talk about so sit back, relax and let's dive right into a galaxy far, far away.

Truth about location shooting ..so sick of all the recent modern star wars productions that shoot on the same size 'volume' where even in 'outdoor' environs look all exactly the same.. P.s. Solo is worth watching imo, it didn't perform in theaters more cause people were pissed about Last Jedi, but it's way more fun than any of the sequel trilogy, that's for sure..

I'm German, 62 years old and a fan of Star Wars from 1977. Rogue One takes you back to the time when it all began. No useless gimmickry with CGI and all those technical gadgets, just a straightforward, straightforward plot. No hero, will still somehow survive story, but the sacrifice of everyone for an absolutely understandable reason. The film is exceptional, exceptionally good.

@@Ryan_Christopher I don't think it's fair to say that one clause in the opening of Episode IV was the basis for Rogue One. Episode IV revolves almost entirely around these plans that have been stolen. The Empire knows they're missing and are in hot pursuit when the film opens. Even without the opening crawl, the story of how this chase started, and where these plans came from, is the logical preceding chapter of the story.

That Vader hallway scene was iconic in two ways. One being, that up until this moment. The sheer ferocity of Darth Vader was only whispered about. How ferocious he was in battle. But those fifteen minutes did everything we wanted. He took the Rebels apart. And the look of terror in their eyes said it all. This is Darth Vader. Dark Lord of the Sith.

Showing the grit, the sacrifice, the cost of fighting this kind of fight is what makes it so special, along with the fantastic, multi-faceted artistry that went into its making, of course. The raw, seething power and brutality of Vader, the willingness of the rebels to get their hands dirty and do bad things in the name of a greater goal...it was just so well done. This film built up the lore and the original trilogy. It didn't try to destroy characters to make the new characters look better. "Many Bothans died to bring us this information..." was actually just cover for what happened. But lots of people died to bring the information. So many died to get the information, that when the attack on the Death Star came from Yavin 4, there wasn't a fleet left at the base. It doesn't subtract from the heroism of the Yavin 4 pilots that they were part of a larger rebellion. It adds to the history of sacrifice in face of overwhelming power that was required to challenge the Galactic Empire.
@Daniel-Strain
@Daniel-Strain 23 күн бұрын
Many Bothans died WAY after this and episode 4. They had nothing to do with this. That was a line from Return of the Jedi about the SECOND death star. And the Bothans did not deliver any plans. They brought information to the Rebels that a second death star was being built, where it was (Endor), and that the Emperor was going to be there. - all information the Emperor purposely let them have. Nothing in Rogue One has anything to do with Bothans or that line.

This is my favorite SW films because of the different take they show on what a “rebellion” means. You typically think of good guys doing good things. But in reality it’s good meaning ppl having to struggle with neutral/neg decisions in order to meet their ultimate goal. It’s moral sacrifice that movies don’t always show.

I'm an old school Star Wars fan, and I... LOVED this movie! I fell in love with every single character! It was like a piece of my heart died every time we lost one of them! Seeing Darth Vader at the very end made me feel like a kid again! See the CGI Princess Leia warmed my heart since I saw this movie in theaters shortly after Carrie Fisher passed away. I was crying so hard from every emotion I was feeling once the lights came on & the credits were rolling, my husband had to walk me to the car because I could barely see from all the tears. I was also shouting while crying out loud in the parking lot, "They never even kissed!!!", over Stardust and her boo. Now that's a movie! They didn't have to make it, but they did, and we are all better for it! ❤

I wish people could go back and experience what it was like in ‘77, it’s really hard to describe just how huge Star Wars was then. It was everywhere. My favorite theater experience was Empire, we were so primed for it, the excitement was so thick in the air you could feel it. And of course we all walked out with “WHAAAAATTT?!?!?!?” His what? NOOOOOOOOOOO. Then realized we had to wait 3 years to find out what was next. Luckily we had India Jones, and many others, to pass the time with in between them. And, of course, many toys to play with. ;-) When Episode I came out in ‘99 I was 30, my eldest was 4 or so, I took him to see it but he was a little too young to grasp it. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, you just have to watch it as a 7 year old again.

Not enough people talk about how revolutionary it was to have such a CG heavy battle sequence shot in broad daylight (Scarif mainly, as well as the scenes done on Jedha), it's SUCH a technically impressive shot and easily the best work ILM has done since the Mustafar fight, and it hasn't been topped since. Oddly enough, Rogue One *is a Disney film*. There are several stories (and maybe a ton of unpublished reasons) why this film (and other Diseny era productions) did/do better than the "bigger" (so to speak) films Disney oversaw/tried to influence. One of those stories, if I recall correctly, involved the director/production crew conditioned their participation if they were given complete creative freedom over the project (while in the Sequel Trilogy Disney exerted almost complete creative control over every single step of the process).

at both Jedha and Scariff, Tarkin said "single reactor ignition", basically let me explain, it operates in a series of sequential ignitions (not unlike a pulsejet) that give a convenient metric for how powerful a given shot is, simply by counting the number of ignitions used to charge the superlaser power cells. It's not a "single reactor" ignition, it's a single "reactor ignition". this is why it looked like a nuke instead of just completely destroying a planet.

@mattrismatt if you pay attention after vaderstabbed the rebel he actually intended to stab both the rebel who handed the plans over and the other rebel he took it out of the hand before vader killed him. @@titanuscreature4485 Vader's intent to kill all of those rebels isn't in question. My point is, he wasn't able to acquire/destroy the plans disk because the door opened enough to be handed over. Do you think leaving the door ajar was also Vader's intent?

Two fun facts: Red Five is the X-Wing pilot who crashes into the shield(his place is eventually taken by Luke in "New Hope"). Vader is holding the door shut with the Force when he comes for the rebels. The hallway sequence was one of the greatest moments of all time. Every other time, we've seen Vader fight against people who(overall)could at least hold their own, Jedi and Force adherents. This is the first time we see him through the eyes of the rank and file of the Rebellion and he is terrifying.

What a film. Yes it’s a bridge between the prequels & the OG trilogy but it hit me in another way. After I had reflected on this, I began to develop parallels to the men of WWII; on the beaches of Normandy (those unnamed in BoB perhaps), the sands of Iwo Jima, the USS Indianapolis, the bomber crews of the Mighty 8th….the thousands of others who died without us knowing their stories. This all without fanfare, during the performance of their duties during what may have been an obscure mission, not unlike the Rogue team depicted here. --An excellent script, fantastic directing holding to the simplicity of “A New Hope”, with a terrific cast & score. Great commentary y’all, very much enjoyed it.

The thing I love about the name "Rogue One" as a retcon, is that after Luke and Wedge etc blow up the Death Star the remains of their squadron are renamed to "Rogue Squadron", you see in Empire Strikes Back that their callsigns are "Rogue Two" and "Rogue Leader". So retroactively, it's like the squad that took down the Death Star were named in honour of the squad that died to get them the plans that made it possible.
