Important because most Rogues have or need a wide range of non-magic weapons and tools such as: poisons, acid, gas or fire or smoke bombs, caltrops, throwing knives, shuriken, darts, spike toed boots, snares and traps, allergens (don't larf, these can be fatal), or even race-specific GERMS.

@@Nerdarchy as a DM i would allow it just for the fun factor, it's not like those are going to one shot a dragon or anything like that , sounds like a good way to let my player(s) learn some new information while they are sneaking about

Purely having a NPC that has this gives me the idea that they could be the BBEG without the party knowing because they could be anyone and if they erased records of their involvement in the past. It is a set up that makes for a great political campaign and not being able to know whom or what they are is well the correct use of plot armor

So one time my character died in the campaign before I had to take a break from the sessions so what the DM and me did was have my mind and soul be stored in the bards ring of mind protection which when I came back and the party found a defective war forged that lacked a mind my characters mind and soul jumped into its body and the first thing I did when I woke up is punch the paladin in the face for killing my character sure it didn't do any damage but when a mindless robot gets up and punches the paladin saying fuck you asshole it makes for a pretty funny return

My high level rogue took a dip into warlock to get the Invocation Mask of Many Faces, combined with Glamoured Studded Leather and an Amulet of Proof Against Detection and Location makes me one of the most skilled infiltrators ever. It helps being an Assassin with Infiltration Expertise and Impostor. I have the Ring of Invisibility but missed that the Gloves of Thievery were not an attunement item. I really wished I had another attunement slot for the Ring of Mind Shielding.

my rogue has gloves of thievery so he has a +20 to sleight of hand and lockpicking, in addition to reliable talent. so the worst he can get is 30 on those checks, meaning essentially he automatically succeeds no matter the lock.

My Arcane Archer found an item the DM said they wanted to roll for on a random treasure table: Amulet of Health! Needless to say it was VERY hard to hide my excitement. Automatic solution for health and concentration!

One item that's good for every non-caster is the ring of spell storing. It requires attunement to cast spells from the ring, but anybody can put spells into it. Any caster in the party can arm up the rogue with whatever spells may seem necessary in the near future.

Good thought, how about a ring or a walking stick/cane that's like magic Initiate 2 cantrips and a 1st level spell usable once per day

The Hat of Disguise being mentioned reminded me of something I did with my brother and his friends, we decided to all do something amusing in 3.5. Everyone had a low-level magic item, and my brother decided his character was going to have a Hat of Disguise, which he immediately used to mess with people, Every Single Time everyone was looking away from his character, or at least appeared to be, his character would use the Hat of Disguise to change their appearance, regardless of the circumstance, and when I say changed their appearance I really do mean it, at one point he looked like feeble old gnomish man then when everyone looked away changed to a spry young elven genki girl. At one point, because I was the acting DM, I made it so that one person was actually watching him cycle through a few of his appearances because the NPC was basically a sniper, I also had this character be extremely confused by the sight of someone basically cycling through a mess of random appearances.

One of my favorite magic items for a rogue is the gloves of Thievery as the +5 to sleight of hand checks means with expertise in sleight of hand and a high dexterity a 1st level rogue can have a proficiency bonus of 12 to sleight of hand checks if that isn't powerful I don't know what is not to mention once you reach 3rd level if you pick up arcane trickster you can easily pick pocket everyone within a 30ft radius with ease and it maxes out at 22 with max dexterity at 20th level which it can be cranked even higher with a few more things

The best low-level, homebrew item my rogue ever had was called a Soldier's Amulet (can't remember who wrote it up). It let her cast either Blade Ward or True Strike as a *bonus* *action.* To top that off, the DM ruled that the resistance from Blade Ward would stack with Uncanny Dodge. They regretted it later that night, when a Frost Giant got a crit on me with an axe... and I still only took half damage. When she wasn't dual wielding, I could use it to make sure she had advantage on a target on her next turn for sneak attack damage. It still kind of amazes me that its author described it as a common item!

I guess both spells come across as low tier, but that is in part because they each take an action, and Blade Ward is unnecessary for a Dexterity character that can just take the Dodge action. Improving it to a bonus action for both spells? Please tell me it at least requires attunement?

@@kylethomas9130 Nope. Like I said, it was a common magic item. To be fair, it wasn't a great item for every class - for instance, my other main character is a sorcerer, and I'd never use it with him. He's not close enough to the fight to use Blade Ward that often, and there are still better bonus action spells than True Strike. I imagine that if I'd been playing a ranged rogue who used crossbows from cover, which is a similar tactic to my sorcerer, the amulet wouldn't be as useful. The synergy between the item and the rogue's melee class mechanics are what made it so awesome, and I liked that I still had to make strategic choices about which spell to cast, or whether it was better to use my bonus action for a second attack. I haven't played enough other melee characters to know how the item would synergize with them. I suppose fighters could have a similar choice between crit-fishing and saving their reaction for something other than dodging.

Another good item for rogues is the Cloak of the Bat. It's an attunement item, but simply wearing it gives advantage on stealth checks. When your in dim light or darkness, you can group the edges and fly. Then once a day, you can polymorph into a bat in dark or dim light and keep your int, cha, and wis scores. It's super useful for stealthy missions or scouting ahead in caves, at night, or in dungeons. Only caveat, don't catch yourself in a bright light, midflight.

general notes for deciding on magic items and or changing bad class features. You either want something that improves the classes already existing strengths, stuff like better sneaking for the rogue. Or things that make up for, or somewhat counterbalance a classes weaknesses, like the pearl of power or staff of the pact keeper for warlock.

@@piemaniac9410 It was making balancing encounters hard was what my dm said, but my guess is because the first session I got to use it was a PvP session and I sweeped everyone else in 1v1s and it caused a lot of bitching. Honestly, our group isn't the best, but we're a buncha bastards and I love them all

Invis doesnt work aginst trenor sense etc. Could just have more enemys that dont have eyes.

@@dawsonwilliams546 what level was the party? oh and DND PvP is just brokenly unbalanced, had a barbarian that was raging (12th level zealot) go down in a single round due to a paladin critting twice, using 3rd level smites on both attacks, and me failing the con save with a nat 1.

I am playing pathfinder as a goblin rouge and am taking leadership feat next level. My plan is to make a little spy team and needed ideas for gadgets this helps alot more than READING 😟

Intitiave advantage would've been amazing in a one shot I was in. I was an assassin with the alert feat and for the entire one shot I was almost always last or in the middle of intitiave. Funny thing though was the entire party was a band of rogues so combat never lasted past round 2

I'm pretty sure that Rogue's don't get access to medium armour without taking a feat.

You are correct. And in many cases, medium armor is actually worse for a rogue (who is probably going to have a high Dexterity).

They were talking about the Mithral Armor, though, which in previous editions was considered one category lighter. That's probably why they thought a rogue could wear it.

With the exception of Elven Chain in 5e, yes. In fact, it might even be two feats - one to be proficient in Medium Armor, and Medium Armor Mastery to cancel out the stealth disadvantage.

Best rogue IRL was Thomas Blood stole the Crown Jewels got caught, demanded he would answer to no one but the king, then not only talked he’s way out of execution but gained land in island worth £500 a year. Moral of the story always put proficiency in persuasion, and the Irish get a pulse 2 to charisma

Ok so this is exiting! I’m playing a rogue in Pathfinder 1 I have 21 in stealth, ring of invisibility gives me 20 moving and 40 stay still for stealth, and a sword staff that as long as I’m completely concealed I get another 12 stealth! We will be going to find a ring of greater invisibility soon! I stealth so hard that the DM says only the gods can see me( and anybody with true sight)

Yeah, it has been mentioned below but this annoys me, rogues don't get medium armour proficiency without a feat or multiclass, so even if mithral doesn't impose stealth disadvantage, you'd still have disadvantage on any check while wearing it

Exactly. But, you can use elven chain. But it's medium Armor so restricted to +2 dex... so good for tier 1... but its rare. I'll stick with light armor. Glamoured studded anyone? :)

I had an eversmoking bottle on my trickster rogue lore bard, I stride into the richest part of the city set up my performance box, Begin a mini concert of music and minor illusions/thamauturgy, pop ever smoking bottle with minor illusion fire works going off while im playing my music and whoila, my dms nobles constantly enptied there pockets willingly by the sheer awe of my performances while my Mage hand is flying around picking everybodys pockets with advantage through the smoke.

No Goggles of Night? One of the worst things is to play a sneaky character without dark vision and they can't see you but they can see the light from the light source you are carrying. I know this may seem obvious.

Every good Rogue should try to acquire the following: Gloves of Thievery (Uncommon) Boots of Elvenkind (Uncommon) Glamoured Studded Leather (Rare) None of these items require Attunement...!

In my group i almost got the studded leather at level 4 but i failed an arcana check, got a frost brand dagger tho and ring of mind shielding so thats pretty nice
