Today I decided to take a deep-dive into the long forgotten ROGUE TRIP: VACATION 2012 to see why this game is so loved by it's fans, and yet never got to really see the light of day.

I beat the game with everyone on hard last year in January. So a couple things is that the game can be beaten without dying you just have to manage money correctly and use the special abilities when needed like freeze, shield etc (it tells you how to do freeze shield etc in the game manual) If you run out of money there is a special ability that let's steal cash from other nearby cars and you can use that to keep your health up. Another thing is that weapon stations are used to upgrade weapons so the remote bomb can be upgraded to a super remote bomb with money that does more damage and aoe. The way to upgrade the weapons you drive underneath the gate and you press the fire weapon button and it will upgrade whatever you have. Also the big daddy boss might be the best boss in any twisted metal game it has the scale of a tm black boss in a ps1 game with no gimmicks you have to work around. There are also 4 unlockable vehicles and maybe like 2 levels I cant remember? I think this game is super underrated. Bad things about the game are eternal acres is too big and the hills mess with weapon homing, no cutscenes at the end of the game for each character. Graphics are probably slightly worse than tm4 and 3 because they are using the single trac engine and probably didn't have as big of a budget as tm3 and 4.

Fun game that I'll always remember because you can blow up the entire map and escape on the moon while everyone else dies. And playing as Big Daddy is glorious, I don't think any other game let you play as a multi-phase car thing that also freaking fly.

Bruh... That thumbnail unlocked a core memory I had seeing this game in a magazine back in the day. The art of this game always grabbed me in a strange way.

I agree that the lack of endings is a bummer, but honestly, I found the idea of getting cheat codes instead to be genius, especially in a pre-internet era like the late 90s. Even so, I still find this to be my favorite car combat game on the PS1. I find the tourist aspect to be a fantastic mechanic that adds the frantic experience, and I love the balance of having to constantly switch between fighting the cars and getting the tourist to its destination to get money. The gameplay and controls I find to be the best in the entire PS1 library of car combat games due to how smooth they feel, and while the AI is relentless, it feels more fair compared to TM2 since you have more control over your vehicle. The character roster is fantastic and creative, I love the levels, I love the color and look of the game, I love the music, I love how unserious and campy the story is, there is just a lot of stuff in this game I adore, and when compared to its contemporaries with Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8, I find this game super underrated, and is up there with Black and Small Brawl as my favorite car combat games. If I ever get into streaming, this is the game I really want to stream. Side Note: In regards to the energy attacks, you have to hold down triangle when you input them. It can be unintuitive at times, but I like this since I can't accidentally input a command and waste energy on an attack when I don't want to (I can't tell you how many mines I've dropped this way). (I deleted my old comment because re-reading it, I felt I came across as a huge asshole, and I apologize for that.)

My cousin used to own this game while I owned TM. This game was fun for what it was, but I gravitated more towards TM. However, if they ever make a new TM, it’ll be cool to have the vehicles of Rogue Trip join in as DLC or a free update. Btw, since you’ve done Rogue Trip, can you also cover Vigilante 8?

I'm honestly down for this game. Just blowing each other up is fun but having something else to do seems refreshing. And it does look like an updated TM2. Plus, hotdogging folks to death seems goofy enough to warrant a playthrough 😂

Rogue Trip, hands down, has the BEST menu music in history. I’ll sit and listen to the 240p 10 minute loop of it just because it’s so badass.

To the narrative of backstories, I completely agree. One thing I always said was that the car combat genre is somewhat an off shoot of fighting games, when ya think about it. Yeah, it’s more “battle royale” than straight-up 1v1 (sans the Boss Battles). But, fundamentally, at their core, they’re very much the same as fighting games. That said, ALL Fighting Games give all their characters fully fleshed-out backstories & current stories. They make their lore as deep as any other fictional universe’s, from any genre, media type, etc. In a lot of ways, it’s what makes some fans of particular characters be even MORE passionate, in playing the character. So, it is a tad confusing. I saw the station wagon and IMMEDIATELY thought of The Griswalds, from the Vacation movie franchise (which…is pretty obvious that’s what they were going for, in a game with “vacation” both in the theme & game title). So, there’s a very easy jumping off point, for that car/character(s). It is a bit baffling, as to why they don’t do that

If you're this experimentive, you're bound to get a kick out of 1994's Quarantine. Honestly, the soundtrack alone is worth a few hours.

I've not seen this game in action before. Future Frustration Friday episode? P.S. I'd love to see an interview with the guy or gal who made the A.I. lol. P.S.S. This (surprisingly) predates the release (not necessarily development of) Crazy Taxi by 5 months.

I've played this game for about an hour. I absolutely loved the controls but the weapons (besides the meteor) and gameplay objectives just weren't doing it for me.

Ah yes my rental childhood game. I remember how incredible this was back then, and still kinda besides the lame ending, and one level that's just hills, and greens. A crazy co-op game too. The Twisted Metal 2.5~ Oh incase someone wanted to know the first song on level XLAX you can find on spotify~ It's The Rascal King by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones I slapped that immediately on my Car Combatish Playlist~ Hope to see this on a stream sometime I binge watch that.
