Im re-visiting these reviews of the korpisoturi after owning mine for few years now, and using it daily this summer for bushcraft, i really really love this knife, its like an religious item to me now, since its kinda first of its kind a "tactical" military überd-duber kômmando puukko seriously if Rambo was from Finland he'd carry this 😂 ok so yeah im a fan boy... i like how it sits high on the sheat feels like you could draw it out in a blink of an eye if Igor would jump out of the bushes.. also although its 5mm at the spine it doesn't feel like an thick knife at all... also i had some concerns about the 63hrc and how it would hold up, but its been great i do put a microbevel on all my puukkos and moras, and i mean an actual mircobevel not secondary grind. 80crV2 has an reputation of rusting easily and the rumours are true, even rain water spots the blade but to me its not an issue and i never oil my blades, only way you could ruin the knife with rust issues would be negligence leaving it outdoors etc.. over all all jokes aside to me its 5/5 knife, the handle felt weird when i first got it and just fondled it at home, but at use its been great and secure, you can stabb it into a tree without any concern about slipping up on the blade...

That's awesome mate, I am glad it is serving you well. I love the edge geometry, however I have had some chipping on the blade but after some seriously hard use. The handle also split, wich I think was a problem with some of the earlier ones made (at least not heard of this happening on any newer ones). There are definitely a lot of posetives about the knife. It is also probably not for everyone, it is very different. Thanks for stopping by again.

After three months of daily use I'm really impressed with this knife. The best parts are the handle and the blade. This is really in a different class to Terava. My puukko is the newer N690 stainless variant of Korpisoturi with HRC 59, especially this one is worth the money with its easy-to-clean tough and shiny blade. There are no grips that are impossible or painful to use with this handle, it is the most versatile handle for real daily "puukko" use I've ever used. The thin roundness of this handle is what a "puukko" is all about; quite different to the style used in knives in other countries. With and absolutely secure grip, be it barehanded or with gloves. The blade doesn't feel at all as thick as it really is (compared to Terava, which are really quite cumbersomely thick in comparison). The blade geometry is well thought through everywhere. The grind is just perfect for wood processing, be it feathers, carving or batoning. You can even cut vegetables quite happily. Every aspect of the blade is designed carefully for different tasks and cuts. The tip is in a tiny bit wider angle than the lower parts, for rougher use, but still paper-cutter sharp. I really only strop it. Compare that to stainless Marttiini puukkos that really need to be sharpened after each use, every day. My other 80CrV2 blades (like Terava and other Finnish blades forged by Laurin Metalli) need to be sharpened more often than my Korpisoturi N690 even if they have the same HRC 59 and are all made in the same factory in Kauhava. Korpisoturi quality is measureably higher. There are no signs of manual errors in the grinding; every angle is perfect and symmetric. I think that is the biggest difference to budget quality knives like Terava. I've searched for a "perfect" knife or puukko for decades. For now, I search no more. Well worth the higher price. If I need a big puukko, I'll use my Terava 140, everything else I do with Korpisoturi. And the tiniest things with a mini Victorinox. I don't need anything else anymore, when it comes to blades.

The blade geometry is really fantastic. I found the edge to be chippy but I would guess the N690 being a bit softer wouldn't be. Personally I think I prefer under 60 hrc for general use. I did have one more problem with my Korpisoturi and that is the handle started to split come loose from the tang after a lot of use. This was after making the video though. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Yes, my opinion is based on the N690 blade alone, I don't have the carbon steel version. I really, really like the stainless blade, after many, many either soft stainless puukkos or 80CrV2's that are a pain to polish after forgetting to oil them daily.. I see your blade, too, has those stains all over. They are insignificant otherwise than that they are not so aesthetical to use for anything food-related.. And it's not a fuss to sharpen, either. I did get two "micro-chips" to my blade from batoning firewood. I think they came from sand on the wood. But with a tiny bit of ceramic rod (of the worksharp field sharpener) I almost got them to disappear. They are still visible but don't interfere with thin paper or fingernail. Otherwise, only stropping is needed in my not-so-demanding mostly "home and firewood" use. The 80CrV2 version may be a bit over-hardened. The N690, however, feels like a really good puukko material. I think I have to invest in another N690 so I can put this one to full use without any mercy, and see what it can take. Did your handle material break/split/something, or did it just come loose from the base of the edge? My blade hasn't seen enough hard use yet to show anything other than the small gap between the plastic and the blade, when pressed. Actually, I'm myself not worried about that at all, since if it breaks I'll just use some glue to bind it together, or in worst case build my own new handle around the excellent blade. :) (...or ask for a replacement, since the designer's replies imply that would be covered by the lifetime warranty) Thanks for your videos! I find them very informative and they have a good atmosphere.

@@max_ljv a couple of micro chips in (was it 3 months?) really isn't bad. The damage to my handle started at the base of the blade where the tang starts. It sounds a lot how you described it. It was after I made the video (wich was some months of daily use). Just started with a little movement wich turned into a split along the seam. I have glued it up and that worked for a little while. I have also heard from someone else who had the same problem (after significantly less use). I am very glad that you are enjoying the channel my friend. Thank you very much for the support.

Thanks mate, shortly after the review the handle started to split. Though the cold might have been a factor (substantially colder here then where most of the people live in Finland). But heard of someone in Germany having the same issue after a lot less use. Both knives were bought shortly after they started production so hopefully it was just a problem with the early ones. Thanks for watching my review.

There are so many design similarities between knives these days that it's difficult to choose the right one for your needs. So, I guess price for most is probably a primary factor for most buyers, since the more you pay the better the steel and handle material you expect to receive for your money. I only discovered the puukko knives a few years ago, but it's clear they hold a very important place in knife users choices. Thank you for your honest and real life review!

Very good review. Thank you. I was looking forward to buying this knife and ended up going for a Fallkniven F1 in LamCoS. I think that the stainless steels we have today are so good that I decided to go for this one and not having to worry about rust. I'm also lazy and don't like to babysit my knife :). Thanks once again for this thorough review. Happy bushcrafting.

Thanks mate. From what I hear the F1 sounds like an excellent choice. I think there are too many people who say carbon steel is better, or stainless steel is better. @@KuukkeliBushcraft I started being interested in bushcraft about a month or so ago. After reading a lot of articles, forums, watching YT videos, I decided to go for a convex stainless steel blade and Fallkniven F1 seemed the best choice. Now I got my eyes on the Joker Nomad. I have a Mora Companion in 12c27 that I've beaten the shit out of it and it's still usable. The F1 has also gone through a bit of abuse, I damaged the handle a bit, but the blade is tough as hell. It still shaves a bit, it's not exactly shaving sharp anymore but almost. I can't seem to make it shaving sharp again but that's because I'm a newb and don't yet have the skills to do it. But I'll get there although I'm not totally keen on putting a shaving sharp edge on it because it looses its strength, and this is also the reason I chose a convex edge. But the way the scandi on the Mora Companion bites the wood is outstanding. My F1 doesn't seem to have that initial bite but it's a lot stronger so it's a good companion for the Mora Companion :) Take care, mate. Cheers

Thank you for the review! I really understand you feelings when playing the Gibson Les Paul :) Regarding the Korpisoturi. How do you perceive this knife in comparison to Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110? I am in proces of purchasing new knife and 110 was on my top list. But then I read reviews on varusteleka.com and reviewers are refering lower quality in the last one or two years. My Jääkäripuukkos were bought when they first started making them so I can't say anything about any change in quality of the newer ones. To be honest I can't fault the Jääkäripuukko. As for wich is the better knife a lot of it is down to personal preference (for example the Jääkäri comes with a dangler sheath wich I prefer),the Rokka is slightly shorter and narrower and so is good for finer tasks while the heat treatment should make it still very strong. To be honest I would be inclined towards choosing the Jääkäri expecially taking into account the difference in price. I think it is very hard to beat.

Good question, I would like to have the Korpisoturi blade in a Jääkäri handle with a Jääkäri sheath. This one has better edge retention but is a little prone to chipping. It is better for things like carving wood but in general not a better knife, but it is far more expensive. I have also had the sheath fall off and since making this video the handle has started to come apart. Now held together with superglue. Please bear in mind it has been used sometimes quite heavily every day for 9 months. Also I only have the Jääkäri 75 and the 120 (in stainless) so I am comparing it to a knife that don't actually have. Also with the handle I have had Moras which have stood up to more. Thanks for watching Gray.

Superb and candid review amigo. Very interesting to see that edge damage and also regarding the bend. I'd love to know how that did come about (fty or in use). I really want to like this knife, but the sheath just seems so flawed. I can't help think they were trying to be smart(er) than the Sissipuukko, but they haven't got it at all right (low slung, high riding, far too many parts and fail points with the loop/clip). I can't cheat on my M95 with such niggles. A rhombic blade alone, is not a big enough pro.

I would guess the slight twist in the blade came about during the heat treatment. The sheath has its positives, the retention is excellent and as for the belt clips. If you wanted to attach it to molle or something it would be great. The Peltonen sheath is the best thought out sheath I know of. The sissipuukko is an awesome knife. Definitely one I would be more inclined to recommend than this one (expecially considering the price). Thanks for watching bud.

I wish it was bit more cheap. Good mod could be maybe to just attach d ring with dangler loop i just wish it would have more modular carrying options straight from the factory like different angles, and so on. I really like the higher grind type puukkos, and i have been thinking trying something bit more modern out. Allmost all my knives have been just standard puukkos with leather sheaths, and all. If the twist was caused by use it might be because many of the laurin metalli, and finnish blades in general of this steel are differentially hardened especially if the blade is heat treated to high hardness so they are not that springy. The core of the blade is hard, but outer layer soft like in other knife the jääkäripuukko you also reviewed

Pretty sure the twist came with the knife. I was thinking of attaching a leather loop to the screw holes. Maybe glueing a pice of plastic to the leather where the screws are. Should be pretty simple. Many people have agreed, that scandi grinds work better when the blade stock is 3mm thick maximum. After the 3mm, the thicker the worse it gets. There is a reason that the Morakniv, has the success it has as a knife, and that's because they keep it maximum at 3,2mm blade thickness! That doesn't mean, that this is a bad knife, however, what I said about scandi grinds is true. This knife has great steel, with a nice heat treatment and decent handle!

I thinner knife passes through things better (try slicing a tomato with a thick blade and you will see what I mean). When working with wood though you are less likely to be passing the knife all the way through the material unless you are splitting the wood (in wich case thick is obviously an advantage). Thick is also strong. There are a few factors to take into account. Obviously the angle of the bevel is very important too.

That is a beautiful knife but that price...not with the similar Terava and Peltonen puukkons out there for a lot less (or the bombproof Mora Bushcraft black or Hultafors OK4). And that sheath, riding so high, gives the equivalent of a bushcraft wedgie, no thanks. Again, Terava and Peltonen have better sheaths in my opinion (though I didn't love my Peltonen sheath). A good honest review mate, thank you for it...though I was never in danger of purchasing the knife :-).

You didn't love your Peltonen sheath? I am curious, why not? Was it one of the leather ones? This knife certainly does have a lot of very stiff competition. Thanks for watching mate.

You should sharpen this knife at least 3-4 times, reprofile it to a slight scandi-vex and then, judge it's edge performance! Have you done all these, and still you get microchips on the edge?
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have done these things and still get micro chips. The knife has been used daily for about 6 months now so it has been sharpened quite a lot. Some chipping but also good edge retention.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Then, it's heat treated harder than it should. Scandi grinds are already prone to chips or rolls, because of their nature (very thin and sharp edge). I find, that scandi grinds wotk better around 58-59 hrc. More than that and you get chips, less than that and it doesn't hold an edge for long, for the same reasons again,( very thin and sharp edge..). You can always reinforce the edge more ( by rasing it's angle a bit and puting some convexing)

@@greekveteran2715 63 hrc is very high. The chipping comes out with sharpening. It holds its edge really well. You sharpen less often but when removing chips you have to sharpen more. Like I said in the video it has been put through a lot of hard use otherwise the chipping wouldn't have been a problem. I also said I think I would prefer a softer steel (for the exact reasons that you describe).

I am gonna get lashed for this.I think Europeans more exactly the Scandinavians really showed the world what a good proper knife is. I mean my fellow countrymen invented the "hollow handle" survival knife and the "clip point" bowie knife. They are terrible. Cutting is not what they do best. It is all looks. I really like the Peltonen knives. The only thing is I like a sharp spine. But. also I have a cutt myself on sharp spine before so, not all blades with dull spines are terrible. Not at all. I really think the US military should adopt the Peltonen knives. They are perfect for anyone and cutt really well. Way better and cheaper then the Winklers the spec ops use.

With the sheaths too (at least the leather ones that I know). The Peltonen knives are so adaptable when it comes to mounting options. Belt carry isn't always the way to go. Expecially if you have Rucksacks, expedition belts, dog belts or battle belts all going on around your waist. I also love the edge geometry and the comfort of the handle. Finnish knives in general are built around practicality and comfort. Of course there will always be a market for knives that just look badass 😂. Thank you very much for watching mate. Have a fantastic weekend.

I think that knife is not worth for the price. The sheath is rubbish and the knife isn't good at any work. The blade is just too short for bushcrafting and too thick for a carving knife. The price is extremely high and you can have a knife that is much better for less price. For example you can get the Terävä Jäkäripuukko for about 70€ and it's so much better than this. I don't personally like this knife but this was a great review Tim!

Glad you liked the review. The knife to my mind at least performs pretty well. It should do at that price though and the Jääkäripuukko is a far better buy to my mind. Thanks for watching my friend.

"... short for Bushcrafting." What do you specifically mean, perhaps batoning, not bushcraft?
@jk-jf3mu

@@osmoahma7561 No, I don't mean only batoning. It was just an example. I meant it's short for rough tasks for example making shelter, batoning or chopping. You can buy so much better knives for the price.

Luckily each of us have right for our own views and opinions. I would not say you cant do "bushcraft" with Korpisoturi, and i sure can do multiple different shelters with far more shorter and mechanically weaker knives, but sure, if i knew more details about what 'bushcrafting" is for knife, and what kind of shelter one cant do well with this knife, we could talk more. Yes the price is steep, but theres also reasons why its pricier than some, and calling it worse or better, also needs more talking. Personally i cant understand the comparing to 2 specific knives, Jääkäri nor Sissi, as they are 2 different knives made differently, and most likely with different retail price in mind. But im interested in detailed conversation of whats better for who and why, without price being the 1st thing as the tools performance is what matters really in the field.

@@osmoahma7561 obviously how we all use our knives and whach each of them do well varies a lot. As for knife comparisons if someone is trying to choose between two similar knives then it is good to see the two together I would have thought. As for this knife I think our freinds opinions were a little harsh. I certainly don't think it is rubbish. When It comes to battoning I rarely batton anything thicker than this knife can handle. It is however sometimes better to have a bit of blade to strike safely on the handle end but is that enough reason to justify an extra 2 inches of blade? Also I often chop off small branches with my knife something a little longer and with more heft will do that better. On the other hand I found the edge geometry and the finer tip great for carving. Obvious solution is to carry more than one cutting tool. As for the sheath, it took a few days use to wear in but after that the retention was excellent. I really wasn't impressed when the sheath fell off the belt clip though. Of course this can be avoided by putting a bit of locktight on the thread of the screws but then you lose the ability to remove and change the clip. I try to keep my videos to about 10 minutes to save people from getting bored so I generally try to be quite brief. I figure at least people have some kind of idea of what a 4 inch knife can do versus a machete. The main thing I have about this knife and doing this review is it is a small, Finnish knife manufacturer trying to do something a bit different and I would like to give them a 100% positive review, but I have too many little niggles to do that in all honesty. Very good comment by the way as it is nice to have to think about the reply. Something more than thanks for watching and have a nice day.
