Roland DDR-30 from 1985. The brain in a digital drum system Roland designed to compete with Simmons at the time. Complete this came with a full set of drum pads to go along.
High quality&24 Hours Build Time: www.pcbway.com/
The DDR-30 is a digital/analog hybrid system. The 24 12-bit PCM samples are digital, but each of the 6 drum voices you can play at the same time are processed analog through the CEM 3360 VCA. Not untypical for the rest of the Roland MKS modules from this era.
Support this channel on Patreon:
/ espenkraft
All the 6 drum voices (kick, snare and 4 different toms) can be triggered from pads through the 6 trigger inputs on the back. Or the voices can be played over MIDI. The 6 voices also have their own individual outputs. There's also a mixed stereo output.
The demo song in the beginning is done with only the DDR-30 providing drums. The hi-hat is not part of the DDR-30, but since you can process the individual drum voices with no less than 16 parameteres each, I just took a snare and tuned it into a hat and overdubbed that part.
The rest of the demo song is Sequential Six-Trak for a LIVE solo while bass, poly synth and arps are coming from the Jupiter-8.

Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

Yes, it was so more fun than today. Today is only instant gratification, no skills involved anymore, just mouse clicking. You can only listen to chart music today to realize things have really gone downhill.
@greenie2600

@@EspenKraft I suggest looking up charts from 1985, and refreshing yourself. For every classic song that you remember, there are 50 godawful ones that we've all forgotten. It's a revealing exercise. Every generation thinks that humankind mysteriously lost the ability to create good music the moment they turned 30. IMO that's a pretty lazy and self-satisfied way to think.
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 жыл бұрын
@@greenie2600 Nowadays I only care to spend my time listening to what I like and that is generally not modern music. Some exceptions can be found, mostly by old artists/groups still making new stuff. Or new artists actually using chords and melody.

No hi-hats or ride or crash cymbals? Did Roland think those were just a passing fad?! 🤨 Some of the other sounds sound a bit like what's in my Roland TR-626, D-10 and U-220, but not *exactly* like them. I know Roland re-used some samples, but it's difficult to say which ones -- especially if they've adjusted the pitch, EQ, or envelope a bit. And I saw a U-220 in there, Espen. I didn't know you had one. Have you done a video on that yet? I'd love to see one! The "re-synthesis" method of "synthesis" is interesting, but I don't think many companies did it other than Roland (for the U-20 and -220) and Fairlight (more or less). Thanks for another informative video, Espen!

Gotta love that Vacuum Fluorescent Display! Cool intro track Espen :) Do you find that (other than nostalgia) it's actually useful to have this type of device, when you could get a lot of the same result (I think?) if you used the same PCM samples in a mid-80s sampler? Or is that a bad assumption?
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I must admit I'd never bought it myself unless for pocket change. I do by very well with some good samples of it. But if I'd ever want to play some drums live on pads, it will be nice to have within reach and truth be told, with the quite extensive sound manipulation you can do with the sounds, analog no less, it's hard to capture all the different variations, you'd have many many samples to do that.

Remember what time this came from. 1985. This was pushing the limits of what they could do and again, they tried to compete with Simmons and those brains also contained kick, snare and toms. Hats were always overdubbed in post and even live drummers preferred to do the hats with real hats. So lots of reasons why they designed it the way they did. In 1985. ;-)

@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 жыл бұрын
There is always something to be had from using the sounds straight out of the machine. More organic maybe and the dynamic range is bigger that way. It's a balance between practicality and principle too so I will tweak my best sounds out of it and then "deep sample" those and use my own samples in future productions. I'll use this directly if I do more videos or maybe live gigs. Cheers!

@@EspenKraft I got a tempting offer, to buy a unit. You might know which one :) Just don't know if it's worth it. There's a glitch in one of the toms, but otherwise in fairly good condition. How much is it worth? And how much better than samples is it? My Tr-505 sounds way better than any samples I've heard. Thank you for your answer :)
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you mean by "better" or that about the TR-505 though. If you want to use the pads input you should definitely get a DDR-30. It sounds very good, but in a production a good sampled drum machine one-shot will not be heard from its original source. However, some drum machines have their own internal groove, not possible to replicate with samples and an external sequencer/daw and some drum machines, like the Linn 9000 has that magic hi-hat fader so I get the magic of drum machines, I'm like that as well. It depends on how you use them. The DDR-30 is not a drum machine however and I would never have bought one except for extremely cheap if I hadn't received one as a donation. ;-)
@74goldenjet
@74goldenjet 3 жыл бұрын
@@EspenKraft thanks. I get what you're staying and I agree :) Imo, the sounds coming directly from the Tr-505 sound better than samples coming from a plugin. Not sure why it is so, but it just is. I totally agree, you couldn't tell which is which in a mix. But if all sounds come from plugins, or all sounds come from vintage hardware, there will be a different "vibe" overall, not just because of the hands on, but the sounds themselves.
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, now that you add the word "plugin". You didn't do that before. Samples coming from a PLUGIN will sound different. I didn't mean a sampler plugin in my previous posts, I meant a sampler. In hardware form.

The drawback of the Simmons drumkit was the snare drum.Many drummers in the 80's went for an ordinary snare and the rest of the kit all electronic.

Not in every Simmons kit, that change when the SDS-7 came out, that was the first digital/analog from Simmons in 1984. A lot of drummers (Including me) who got the Simmons SDSV put an acoustic snare for other type of music playing.

That's a two part layered thing. Two Roland Jupiter-8 sounds layered. One high string/brassy and one pad with short attack. Both out of my TAL sampler pack with Jup-8 sounds so it's not played on the real Jup-8. All synth sounds except for the Six-Trak solo is from the TAL sampler and my custom Jup-8 patches.

Even big artists/producers stayed away from electronic cymbals at this time. They often overdubbed live cymbals. Roland also wanted to compete with Simmons and they didn't include cymbals either. This was pushing the limits of the tech within a reasonable price point.

Because is not a drum machine, the DDR-30 is an electronic drum kit, it came with pads, check the video and you will see the triangular shape pads, it was made for a drummer to play and use their acoustic cymbals.
