Roland DJ-707m easy microphone calibration

Here's an easy 4-step process to properly set the gain and calibrate Mic 1 + 2 inputs on the DJ-707m. This is vital to eliminate gueswork and avoid clipping. Extra bonus included: the lazy way...just use Mic 3. Remember to save your settings as a Scene.

So glad I stumbled across this video, I had tried every combination of adjusting low/mid/top on the mics and could not find a setting I was happy with, it just sounded atrocious, followed your advice and set to -15 and sounds crystal clear. Really helpful.

My Microphone now sounds Fantastic - I was about to ditch this controller as I though the Mic channell was crap . Now I have the best controller

Thanks just calibrated mine! Couldn't figure it out at the gig why mics 1 & 2 sounded distorted but mic 3 was good..

Thanks for this but running cranking your master volume and each mic volume up sounds weird though. Why not leave the Gain on the Mics setting at 0 and then use the volume know to adjust levels?

Tx for the video. when I plug my microphone on Left or Right Jack AUX (the button on MIC position), I can't change any settings in the Mic3 Scene Edit (even I put REVERB in the Mic 3 settings, nothing change). What's wrong ?

Hi Chris, i've 707m and i bought condenser mic. Does it support 48v phantom power?

I don't think so. It's geared more towards live performance, not studio recording. I remember hearing from Roland that the mic pres were tested and calibrated using a common dynamic mic like a SM-58 as the base line.

The 707m mic 1+2 inputs are high gain preamps and can clip/distort easily depending on the type of mic used. Since the mic inputs don't have individual metering, you can use the master volume meter to get an accurate setting of the mic gain at unity/zero. This is common technique for calibrating gain, similar to the way I've seen live sound guys, commercial studios, and mastering engineers calibrate their studio monitors, PA systems, etc. Of course you can guess and adjust the gain by ear, but it's not exact and accurate. If done correctly, with this technique you won't have any issues with clipping.

@@cooloutbeats Thanks for the great video. For clarification, would the master gain and mics be set to the max throughout an event? Does that mean you would have to adjust all of the other input levels accordingly to stay out of the red? Your reply insinuates that that is the proper way from a studio engineering perspective. Most of the time I have my line level gains, master, and mics at or around 12 o'clock. Can you possibly do an additional video to cover how to properly set the other input gains on the 707M?
