This video is intended for people who have a Roland SPD-SX and an Apple iPad. I wanted to share how I’m using the Beatmaker 3 iPad application and the Roland SPD-SX as a controller for the application.

Please post a video connecting the devices from scratch that shows all of the midi settings from the SPD SX. Would really help to understand how to successfully connect SPD SX to the iPad. Thx!

This is cool but can you explain the connection setup with iPad? The iPad is connected with what cable? USB to which port on SPDSX? Any internal settings needed? Especially for patch changes. Thanks!

Hi Brett! How you set this thing up? I'm having major problems with roland spd-sx with beatmaker 3. Everything works fine when I tried Spd-sx with Pro Tools on my macbook pro. Beatmaker doesnt recognize Spd-sx at all. Rolands usb-mode is set to audio/midi and i've installed latest usb-drivers etc. correctly. Also tried Novation launchkey with Beatmaker and no problems at all. Launchkey is shown on midi device list right away. Roland Spd-sx is the only hardware that doesnt work with beatmaker. Any help?

TL PRODUCTIONS Are you using the Apple USB-Thunderbolt adapter? It’s essential that you’re using that. Check the “MIDI FOCUS ACTIONS” tab in the Beatmaker settings. Each pad will need an assignment from the SPD-SX. Check MIDI channel send from SPD-SX? Make sure Beatmaker pads are on a receiving MIDI channel. (Mine are channel 10).

Brett Donis, Im using apple lightning-USB camera connection kit. I think it’s same that you’re using on video. Do you have Roland Spd-SX on your midi device list on BeatMaker? Spd-SX is the only hardware that i dont see on midi device list. Every keyboard etc. is show’n on that list and works perfectly. Thanks for reply, I’ll keep on struggling..

Did you check the MIDI FOCUS ACTIONS tab? Is it populated with the pad assignments?

Brett Donis, sorry for late reply. Still trying to figure out the problem. I checked MIDI FOCUS ACTIONS, but cant assign any of pads. Can you post a video where you connect BeatMaker & SPD-SX from the scratch. And also show what midi channels you choose from SPD/BeatMaker to hook those together. That would be a lifesaver.. Can you export midi? I would like to use this to create drum beats then export as midi and continue developing in DAW on my pc/mac

G. Stankevičius you can output midi and and/or audio via Export no problem. For use with the iPad I use the “Documents” app. I find it useful for working with music apps in the iPad. Check it out if you haven’t.

Jonathan Castillo Hi, thanks. Other than the Apple lightning/power connector that I described you don’t need any special interface.

Yes because i tried doing it with my roland spd and my ipad pro but the screen on my spd sx wont move from “connected to computer”

Also the sound comes out of the ipad or certain amp?

Sounds like your using the usb output port on the SPD SX. You want to be using the midi output instead. You are sending a Midi signal to the iPad only.
