I've said this before: Make no mistake that this simple Rolex Oyster Perpetual is "The Rolex". This is the newest version that made Rolex famous so long ago. This is the version that swam across (almost) the English Channel and was presented at stores in a fish tank before almost any other watch manufacturer had a water proof watch. This is the watch that was a "sports watch" before we even knew what a sports watch was. You want heritage and vintage in a modern design? Then I dare anyone to show me another watch that meets this standard. No, I don't own one; but I should!

I just got one with champagne dial in for a review and I was blown away with how perfect the 36mm size is. I am so glad Rolex didn't ditch this size. I am seriously considering saving for one. Your in depth review makes it hard to say no to this watch

I’ve been ogling this watch for a long time (with that color dial). It’s a timeless classic that could be worn in any situation. And it’s kind of a stealth-wealth watch, which I find really cool. And I think that you’re right about the size. It fits you perfectly. For some reason, guys aren’t happy these days unless they’re wearing something the size of a hockey puck on their wrist. This watch whispers quality, excellent taste, and understated class. What could be better than that? Great video, by the way. Please, keep up the good work.

I also have a 6 3/4” wrist and went for the 36 mm white dial DateJust four months ago. Classic Rolex with the cyclops; polished center links on the bracelet and roulette date give it a hybrid sports/dress vibe. I love this watch more every day.

I purchased mine on Saturday this week and I am over the moon with it, a few weeks earlier than actual 40th. Wearing it now as I just could not leave it in the box, a true beautiful watch and it could not fit any better it does wear more like a 38

I have this watch and a 7.5" wrist and it looks terrific. I agree the hands and dial colors don't contrast a lot BUT the sunburst steel color dial looks gorgeous when the whole watch is seen on the wrist. The quality is superlative and it runs +1/-1 per day.

It is a great watch and the dial is awesome. Have the grape dial version n it fits my puny wrist 6.3inch well. The lug design of this version makes it looks larger than it looks

Hi, Guy... This was a real eye-opening video. As I mentioned in another question, I recently purchased a Rolex DateJust 36mm two-tone for myself to replace an older DateJust two-tone that my mother gave me 33 years ago. The only problem with the older DJ was that was a 31mm watch and as I get older, my eyes get not-so-sharp and I felt that a larger watch would be ideal. I could then send my old watch to Rolex for an overhaul, and keep it going for a long time as a back-up. However, going back to the new 36mm DJ, the only problem is that since it's a bit larger, and shinier it attracts attention that my older DJ didn't. So I've been considering a second daily wearer and saving the DJ for more dressier occasions as well as daily wear (these days during winter I usually wear long sleeved shirts and it pretty much hides under my cuff... however when the rains finally quit and the daytime temps go back up, I will switch back to short sleeves. Anyways, I was checking out various reviews of various watches on KZfaq channels (including yours...) and originally decide that the Hamilton Khaki Field watch might be a good choice. However, I was not a fan of their dial design... too many numbers which I felt made for a very cluttered face. Hmmm... what to do. Fortunately, your video on the Oyster Perpetual crossed my screen and, like you, I decided that this would be my next watch. It is plain with a stainless steel case... just the ticket for avoiding scrutiny. I can relegate my DJ to more formal, dressed up occasions or times when I wouldn't be in big crowds. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

My First Rolex was the 34 mm Air King 14000M . I have the tudor BB hertage 41 black dial, sharp watch and its crazy accurate, withen 5 seconds per week, not bad for the ETA 2824-2. I have a 7.5 inch wrist,I believe this 36mm would be the perfect watch. and for the preowned prices this is an offer I cant refuse. my next watch,oh I am weak and the rolex is so perfect.

My next watch purchase, it’s the most perfect watch in every way for my taste. The 2018 dial colours, the white is very nice but the black just has a little extra with the slight sunburst effect. Also the blue 369 dial is a thing of beauty

As a potential purchaser of a Rolex, the buyer is faced with multiple conflicts during the decision making process. My first thought was a Submariner no date (new / super case). I tried the watch on at the Rolex dealer's but just couldn't get my head around the very square looking / bulky size of the watch. It felt uncomfortable on my 7" wrist and I imagined the crown would dig in to my hand if worn at work whilst spending extensive time on my laptop! I then ordered in 3 different models of the 36mm OP (silver, grey and blue with the 3,6, 9 dial). I decided to purchase the blue dial OP since the combination of size, comfort, looks and build quality delivered much of what I wanted in a high end automatic watch. Do I regret the decision of OP over no date Sub? No, however; if Rolex reverted to a smaller case sized Sub (i.e. pre-ceramic size with a solid linked bracelet and clasp, well; that for me would make my decision much easier!)

Bought my wife this watch 2 days ago but with the black dial. She almost got a 39mm but after trying on the 36mm she kept it.

Wonderful! Sad if the gray dail makes the legibility bad. I think the gray dail is the most elegant - making the watch even more understated but surely no less classy...

Great review. Super detailed with a lot of insights. I was considering the DT36/41 as well the OP39. But after this I am really considering the OP36 for the reason I realized I do not enjoy to have a date on a watch and as well a every day watch under the classic rolex style. With this now the doubt comes OP36 previous model VS 2020 new models. I personally love the old version with Champagne dial but the new dials I am a bit concern about the quality over time. What is your thoughrs on that? Champagne dial vs new dials and old movement vs new movement and as well the new clasp adjustment. Hard choice!!!! 🙂

I love this watch in the 39mm with the blue dial. The green dot hour indicators really talk to me. This will also be a future purchase.

Excellent review again. I personally love this watch the bezel being my only slight concern, love the simplicity and the grey dial. I have a 7" wrist and have owned a 1985 36mm 18ct Daydate for 20yrs which I feel fits me perfectly however I only wear it on special occasions. I have tried several 40mm models over the years but they just don't sit right on my wrist,this however looks a fantastic every day watch.

Great review Guy. I totally agree, this makes a fine understated casual watch. My Wife wears the exact same one as you reviewed. We both actually like the grey, or “steel” dial, but I understand your preference for white or black. I have a 6 1/2” wrist, and my Wife actually has a 7” wrist. If it fit both of us the way she has it fitted, I would wear it sometimes as an alternative to the Submariner 114060 I wear pretty much every day. 👍

After quite a bit of forum reading about the OP 116000, there seems to be a lot of “group think” regarding the double indices. I think all of the current OP’s with fully lumed markers look great. I picked up a silver dial 369 and it’s currently my daily wearer (7.5” wrist). Couldn’t be happier. Don’t underestimate the complex simplicity of the clasp. Great review.

I appreciate the hard work in this review. The production value, the thoroughness. Excellent. I’ve watched it 10 times, trying to absorb every iota of information. The only thing I would have liked to see would have been a different example of the watch. The grey is my least favorite. I would have liked the black dial or blue 3,6,9. However this is just preference for eye candy and doesn’t affect the quality of the review.

My Rolex of choice. I love how “pure” it is. Simple. Elegant. Versatile. Like the symmetry.

I got the blue for me and white for my dad....I love the OP....might get the silver and every color that comes out that I like haha......its the best looking Rolex IMO.

Really solid advice! I would also say one could enter the Rolex Submariner watch with a nice used five digit example - something like a no date two liner. I have seen recently serviced two liner Submariners for about $6k. That being said getting a new watch from Rolex (and likely at a discount for lack of popularity) seems like an excellent proposition.

Great video once again! I own the OP36 Blue with the 3 6 9 dial and it’s my favorite watch by far. I have larger Breitling and Omegas but there’s something special about the proportions of the Rolex. The only thing I will disagree with you on is that it’s not an entry level Rolex....there’s no such thing IMO. I know what you meant but a Rolex is a Rolex :)

It shares the movement with the Submariner 114060. A real workhorse.

I bought my OP36 with the blue explorer dial one month ago and i absolutely love it :) there is just no occasion where you cant wear this watch

the problem with the OP39 is that it only comes with the black or white dial. i like the gray dial just like what you have in this video.

my oyster precision from 1974 (manual wind) i paid about 70 dollars for overseas still works--sort of. when you unscrew the stem it comes all the way out of the watch! the watch can be wound and time can be set by waiting for the current time to match what is indicated on the dial. probably easily fixed but kind of neat the way it is. do i want a new rolex? not at today's prices. if i were to spend this kind of money it would go toward a zenith el primero...

The design and proportions of the Oyster Perpetual 36 are stunning. Sadly I'm not sure I could cope with a daily wearer that lacked a date. A DateJust 36mm would be my pick for that reason.

I tried the OP 39, 36 and 34 at an AD. My wrist is has a width of 6 cm (2 3/5 inch) and a circumference of arround 7 inch. I have to say the 39 is to large. The 36 in black works, and even the 34 with a white dial is just perfect. Don't be afraid of smaller watches

I love all the colors to the OP but the one I would opt for is the white grape/champagne dial. It is ashamed Rolex does not put that color on the DJ without it being TT because that would have been my dream (they use to put champagne dials on steel DJ models). So the OP with champagne dial is the first and easiest way to get a bit of gold look in your Rolex before hitting the high prices

I really can't decide between this or the black dial !!! Definitely has to be 36mm... But I have no idea where I can go to try both on... My AD will likely take months to get one in... And did I mention that it will take a few years to save? Oh well.... Good things come to those who wait right?!?

Beautiful and as usual excellent video. However strange that you didn’t mention the negatives in the same way as you did with the explorer. Namely lack of anti reflective coating and bracelet fit. You said that with this 36 you can get a perfect fit using the micro adjust yet you sold your explorer because you couldn’t. ????

(1) What is the diameter of the dial? I wish reviewers would include that. That measurement vs. the overall size determines how big the watch will wear. You say it feels bigger than 36 mm, and that suggests to me that the dial is sufficiently large for that, but an actual measurement would help. (2) This bracelet could use the glide lock clasp (quick adjustment without tools) that is present on the Submariner. Great review, btw.

Nice watch. Can’t say I’d go for this if I was after a Rolex sports but couldn’t find one at the dealers. There’s more to the watch world than Rolex. The brands strategy just seems to be making them even more popular but they could do with being given a bloody nose.

Man, this is THE watch! Just get it (if you can afford it). For me, if it would have a date at 6 o'clock it would be the perfect watch out there...
