I’ve purchased watches that went on to be “better than grail” watches in the sense that I began to recognize them for the perfect every day watches that they are. I have one watch in particular (an Omega Seamaster 300 master coaxial) that never seems to get old. I put it on a deep green Hodinkee cordovan strap and it’s just perfect every day. I own more expense watches than my Seamaster - but they never seem to get as much wrist time. It’s like my wife: I don’t know if she’s technically the most beautiful woman in the world (close!), but she’s perfect for me.

I am always surprised when mechanical watch lovers don't care that much about accuracy. That is one of the most exciting parts for me. A mechanical watch that is accurate to maybe plus-minus a couple of seconds a day. I have bought and sold many watches but I have a hard time selling the ones that are very accurate. It just makes them more special to me.

People shopping for accuracy is like a bell curve relative to price lol. People who shop for affordable ones are willing to trade off accuracy cause they know they're getting a cheaper watch, people who buy the F-you money watch don't really give a damn, it's the people in the middle who generally care more about accuracy from what I see.

As for your question about rotation, on my left hand I keep my daily wear, the Omega Speedmaster Mark 4.5. On my right hand I wear a series of about 35 watches, which means that each one gets worn about 11 times per year. The watches are kept in one long row. Each morning I take the watch at the right side of the row and at the end of the day it gets put on the left side. These watches are dramatically different from each other. They range from Omega to Timex and everything in-between. Some are relatively new, the oldest is 148 years old. They are dive watches, dress watches, kinetic watches, solar powered watches, manual wind and automatic. There are vintage pieces never talked about any more such as Rodania, Enicar and Gruen. Each watch has it's own story to tell and many are as old as me, or older.

Rolex followers love the pretense of loving "tool" watches. The Yachtmaster is a model where the brand gives up some of that pretense and acknowledges its true positioning as a luxury-only brand. So it's less popular for that reason. Look at the Cellini line.

Regarding the grail or several less valuable watches question - it's the grail. After 7 years of collecting, I've experienced trying to argue myself out of the grail based on logic - lower cost, more practical, wider variety of watches, etc. But it's always resulted in the feeling there's an itch that hasn't been scratched. A year ago, I obtained the grail. It's the grail for a reason. It resonates with you, stirs something beyond logic: your passion. To paraphrase a quote by Pascal, "The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of." The grail will give you joy every time you wear it, hold it, look at it; an experience the substitute can never match. So even if it takes longer, and requires considerable discipline, that will only make the accomplishment, the enjoyment, greater once you actually get it. That said, reason probably does play some kind of role ... my grail wasn't a $100K+ watch after all. But it was a big financial decision and required a considerable leap of faith. Nevertheless, if you don't heed this recommendation and decide to go for the substitute(s), even that will become part of your watch collecting journey. As Miles Davis, put it, "There are no mistakes"!

My personal note on accuracy: While I enjoy my watches that are accurate to within a couple seconds per day, my TAG Heuer El Primero [+/-1sec] or my Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical [+/- 2-3sec], for instance, that doesn't mean that I necessarily gravitate towards wearing those watches over my less accurate watches (my vintage Speedy, or Seiko Skx), which give me an entirely different pleasure experience when I wear them. I would say that the accuracy discussion would partially hinge on the previous discussion of a one "grail" watch vs a 5 "good" watch collection; meaning that if you were to only have one "grail" watch you would probably want it to be quite accurate. That being said, I suppose it would still come down to each individual, whether they liked to interact with their watch on a daily or semi daily basis for setting, etc. Thanks for the vids Jenni! P.S. Sweet vintage Heuer!

Following in order of conversation: Definitely 5 really nice watches over one grail. The cocktail watches are beautiful. I have the SSA343 and it’s the most beautiful dial and hands for the $$$. Accuracy is definitely important. But just one factor and must be taken in context. Owning a number of vintage watches has made me more flexible in that regard. I am thinking about a GS for my next. I have the Baby Grand Snowflake (SARX055) and it is SO beautiful, it makes me want a GS. But then, it doesn’t take all that much to get me lusting after a new (to-me) watch. 😊
@anthonysmith2982
@anthonysmith2982 3 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on the 5 highly desired pieces V’s the 1 grail 100%. Cocktail time?... not so much. As a piece of design, it feels 'pushed' to my eyes. Forced perhaps is a better word. Either way, it doesn't do it for me. I'm pretty old school, in that I think that the closest thing to a complication a dress watch should have is a small seconds register, which isn't even really a complication! ...and I'm sure that there are complication free variants of the Cocktail time, so I guess what I'm really saying is that - to me at least - the dial texture is overplayed. I s'pose I get the 'hype', they're not ugly dials and I'm actually one of those rare Seiko fans that doesn't mind the upwards push of Seiko's pricing. I own the SPD123J, the cream and gilt dialled 2020 Alpinist. Admittedly I was lucky enough to have picked one up BNIB at a healthy discount, but even at the $650USD-ish that you can find them for pretty easily, I believe them to be a lot of watch for the money. I hear a lot of people complain about the price of the 2020 Alpinist, what I don't see is anyone offering an alternative from a brand with similar pedigree and an in-house construction that offers similar proven reliability and similar low servicing costs... I suspect that applies equally to the Cocktail Time at its price. And yes, I again again re. accuracy. I have a reasonably sized collection of vintage Soviet era pieces which I didn't buy for the accuracy!, despite them mostly running pretty well (either that or not running at all it seems!, but that's an entire other thing). I also own a rare and beautiful 'Kronatron' vintage Swiss diver, a combination of the Zodiac Sea-Wolf and the Omega '57 Seamaster 300 in design (that I grabbed from eBay for $50 by pure luck) that ran at approx + 3-5 MIN p/day! whilst I waited over 2 months for a new de-magnetiser to arrive (due to CV-19 shipping drama) and I didn't care one bit. I'd simply removed the watch, pop the crown and re-set the time a few times a day! Didn't really bother me a great deal. De-magnetising bought it down to around +20-25 spd, and I suspect that I'll be de-magnetising it a bit: I don't think it's a particularly well made Swiss watch - but it's stunning to look at. That's sorta OK for me, at least in vintage watches that are 50-60 years old. And finally : GS. Love them. In contrast to my earlier statement about vintage accuracy, my Bulova Lunar Pilot, which seems to run within milliseconds of perfect time, has shown me how great it is to be able to confidently set a tool watch from another watch in my collection. I recently had to re-set my Lunar Pilot for the 3rd time, due to Daylight savings. On all 3 occasions the Bulova UHF quartz movement had gained slightly less than 1 sec. in 6 months. I highly doubt I'd get that crazy accuracy from a GS spring-drive, but to get get close to it in a beautifully designed and insanely well finished luxury package is pretty desirable to me, as is that mesmerising second hand sweep. My big 2021 purchase will be a Ball Engineer III Marvelight (before they go completely in-house) 'cause what they do to transform an ETA 2824-2 into an RR103 is astounding (and easily serviced), plus I sorta wanna see how 904L steel wears on a watch long term... and I really like how the watch looks and what it offers at the $. Good comment mate - inspired me to throw my own 2c worth in! Cheers.

I have a seasonal rotation system where certain watches will be worn more depending on the season. In the Spring and Summer I tend to dress more colorful and casual as such i tend to favor more casual watches like my divers and field watches. In the fall I wear more nature colors such as browns and greens so I lean more towards field watches and dress watches. In the winter I tend to dress more dark and in layers so a dress watch tends to match my outfits more. Obviously the activity I'll be doing will of course break the rule. Such as a such formal event in the summer, then I pull out a dress watch or a hiking trip, I'll pull out my Gshock, etc.

Agreed about the grail vs 5 different watches. I've owned more expensive Swiss brands but realised that no matter how "grail" your watch is, you can get tired of wearing it day in and day out. A variety is definitely the way to go for me. That's just my personal preference :)

To everyone making roughly the same and is aware of your modest salary, it has the potential to come off as an imprudent purchase. Sure, it's none of their business what one wants to save their money for, but I am saying that it has that potential. Also Tesla start at $37k for the model 3 which are most of what I see. quick update to the buying on credit question. Do not buy on credit if it is out of your price range and you can't afford it. However, if you have the money saved for a specific watch and a 0% finance plan is available it would be a good idea to take finance. 1) if you have the money in an account with interest you would gain interest on the watch's money. 2) reduces necessity to borrow for other items where 0% finance isn't available (e.g. Car, furniture, creditcards) during that period of time.

I’m still very immature on my horological collection journey (at 63 year old), so I started buying everything and anything…..well, that frenzy ended. Now I’m concentrating on quality pieces which provide me with prideful satisfaction. I like color and texture, and brand is unimportant I’m just at home with a Patek or a Timex(which I own one of each). What is now important to me, is how it makes me feel when on my wrist. At the end of the day, the watch only needs to impress me.! By the way…..Family and Friends have benefited greatly of my watching buying frenzy…..I’ve learned quite a bit….expensive lesson, but worth it!

I don't think it's the functionality aspect, as in causing real world issues, it's just the voice in the back of your head saying it's not right, it's off. I tolerate it for the mechanicals I like, but I'm regularly adjusting them back to the exact time. That's once every day or two, if I wear one for an extended time, which is common. If you're the type that rotates/revives a different watch every day, obviously not an issue.

As I begin to study the watch I learn its pluses and minuses. A sense of loyalty begins as I learn the machine’s potentials and observe them being realized. With regards to a rotation, I typically take two watches out of the safe to wear for a couple weeks, one dressier and one sportier, then I swap out. Those will be the only pieces I wear for that period of time. That way, every time a watch comes back up in the rotation I get to remind myself why I loved that watch in the first place. :)

I put watches on a rotation because if I do not, I will perseverate on just ONE and then the others I tend to actually miss - like an old friend I haven't seen for a long time. I get sort of emotionally depressed and can't figure out which one to wear... and my heart begins to ache. But if I put them on a rotation, my heart rejoices and often I will look forward to that day - kind of like visiting an old friend! My heart races as I place it on my wrist - much like when I first got it. I realize that sounds silly, but my watches are really my pals... my friends! I truly relish in their company because each of them has a different story to tell and a different history. It is something I never admit or speak of openly - but feel in my heart. It is a secret I share - just between me and my watches...

It goes to the opera in NYC and is usually always on my wrist, even while working on my cars. White walker is a great nickname 👌 I agree with a lot of the commenters here, a podcast from you would be a hit. Aside from being spontaneous and informative, we do like the way you talk, and how relaxed your content looks because of it.

Jenni Jen, when you have a few watches, accuracy and time keeping does become important so it is always a problem with mechanical watches, but we still like them, but it is a hassle when you have to keep setting the time (watch winders are not good for watches). This is where quartz (battery/ solar, charge-up powered) watches become very useful as they can sit for days and weeks but still keep perfect time when you are in a hurry and want to wear them... just my own thoughts.

Glad I found you Jenni Elle. As for your responses, nice to have your views. 5 watches v “a grail”? Go for the Grail everytime. Why? Because once you have achieved the Grail watch, it is only a matter of time before you get the next watch. It’s how our minds, ambition or whatever work. Accuracy? Accuracy is what defines the entire meaning of the existence of a timepiece. Without this, what’s the point? Even if your iPhone is more accurate, a watch is a functional item as well as an excuse to display another part of our character. Might as well wear a bracelet if you give up functional accuracy. Checklist before you buy? With respect, I believe you left out a very important & often overlooked point; cost to service/maintenance. Some of the most sought after watches also need specialist service. This can ruin your long term use of the watch, particularly that “grail watch”. Flexing? What a great & kind answer you give! Says a lot about you! Cheers & thanks!

The "one-watch-that-does-it-all" is a question mainly for men. The variety of women's apparel and our social situations make it impossible to have just a single timepiece.

For the first question i think it depends on the grail. My grail is the Black Bay 58 and that would work perfectly as a one watch collection watch.

My problem is that I LOVE looking at watches and collecting them the way people do with art pieces. I love being able to wear a watch that matches my mood or my outfit. I’m blessed that I don’t have any kids or real responsibilities and I’m young and have a lot of disposable income. It makes it really hard to not impulse buy whatever beautiful watch catches my eye.😭

Great video as always. You were asked about the importance of accuracy and I would say, that what you pay for in a luxury watch is fit and finish. That’s exemplified in part by very accurate timekeeping.

1. I’d go with 5 vs 1 grail 2. Cocktail time is a great first dress watch (punches above its weight) 3. I think accuracy is a moot point. If you want accuracy get a g-shock. I focus on materials, craftsmanship, QC 4. Love GS, I have 2. But the bracelets are still lacking. 5. Original Bond Sub 6. I’ve seen a few JLCs from the Master line that seemed a bit shoddy 7. Visually speaks to me (usually a pop of color), functionality (must have date), legibility, build quality, reputable brand, something special (limited, cult favorite, future collectible) 8. An under the radar flex is fine, a know it all typically knows about 1/2 what they think they know 9. I wear what fits the outfit/occasion. Since lockdown I have several I haven’t worn in 6+ months. 10. I buy only new watches on credit (usually only Rolex from AD). Builds credit. But make sure you have the cash in the first place. Everything else buy used with cash so you can negotiate. 11. Yachty in rhodium dial is a total sleeper, it’s on my wishlist.

I couldn't do just one watch because there will always be a situation in which another could be better. Maybe a 3-watch collection would be better. You could have a dressy piece, an everyday piece and a specialised piece for whatever your [ passion is

I think it would be hard for most people to have a single very expensive watch that one would be comfortable using for all activities (travel, gym, swimming, gardening, sports, business, leisure) so 5 with a similar cumulative value would be best.

Regarding Grail vs 5 watch collection: I am going in between. I think 1 is too few and 5 is too many. For me, it's 3 watches, and the ideal 3 watch collection: 1) Lange1 (My Grail) 2) Sub or Explorer 3) Speedy Pro. (And no, I am not all the way there. But I am always looking/dreaming which is most of the fun, right?)

I agree with your opinion on grand seiko being “too perfect”. Most watches gets better with scratches or I wouldn’t take a second look, but for most grand seiko scratching it ruins the perfect polish

Its the same principle as one grail instead of a couple lesser watches, once you reach perfect, what do you have left to work for. Nothing above perfect
