My Sub was given to me by my Father, in 1975 ,as my High School graduation gift. I still wear it everyday.

One of the best damn Rolex stories ever! I've watched this quite a few times, and it never gets old.

For a fellow watch lover this is a heartwarming story, can really see the pride of ownership here. If you can afford the service I highly encourage taking it back in, it may have been adjusted improperly when rebuilt and could indeed be slowly damaging itself in the movement. 2 minutes a week time loss is embarrassing for the watchmaker who serviced this piece of that is how it came back to you. They should have got it within only a few seconds a day easily. Hope it serves you well for many more decades though.

That fishing feel woke memories I had long forgotten. In 1984 I went into a fishing tackle shop in Dublin and saw a Cardinal 77 in the glass case. My father was quite ill with a serious coronary condition at the time and staring death in the face. I couldn't cure him but I figured a good fishing feel might cheer him up. It was relatively expensive and meant a quiet social life for me in the following weeks but I bought it. He lived a further 10 months and only used it once but the look of sheer delight on his face as he used it was priceless. Perhaps the wisest purchase I ever made. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm a third generation Rolex owner - I proudly wear my grandfather's 1954 Rolex Turn-O-Graph (predecessor to the Submariner)

One of the finest watches on earth! Mine has been with me through war, peace, wild youth, college, deaths, births, the good and the bad since 2004! It has been serviced once, and the only time its not on my wrist is when i work (due to my job). It has, and will continue, to age with me. I had worn other watches before this one (tag, omega) but they have never quite been as durable, nor as completely satisfying to own as this watch. Truely a remarkable video detailing your life journey with your submariner....im sure there are many more stories yet to come!!

What a wonderful story; thank you for sharing it. I believe there are sometimes objects in life a man bonds with, for whatever reason. Your Submariner is a part of who you are; it’s obviously represented different things to you over time, and been with you everywhere you’ve gone. A finely crafted wristwatch is something an electronic device simply can’t hold a candle to. Continue to wear it in good health.

For some proper context, bear in mind in that Rand/USD conversion rate in 1981 was 0.88; your Rolex thus cost $681.82 at the time (not $48!), which was a whole lot of money.

This truly is a lovely story. This is the point, sometimes we can obsess about owning lot's of different watches, but there's nothing like owning a rolex that you wear for life, and is your only watch! Makes me want to wear my rolex more now. Congratulations on a great watch and wonderful story.

Thank you. I saw this video getting on for 2 years ago now. I too “bucked the trend” schooling wise. Flunked my A Levels but always had a passion for computers. I now own a successful IT company and today I picked up a new Submariner. In the back of my head I remembered this video and watched it again with a huge smile on my face.

This video made me decide that i am not a collector but a onewatch guy, sold it all of, i own my one and favourite watch.

Great story! I bought my Rolex Explorer 2 about 15 years ago. By far the biggest purchase of my life at that time. I was scared to death during the purchase and nervous but proud wearing it for the first few months. It's rarely been off my wrist since that day and come with me on adventures all over the globe. I loved the story - it was so like me. My father had a 1949 Rolex when I was growing up and he always told be how strong and reliable it was,, so when I finished university I bought a very plain stainless steel Rolex Oyster in 1989. I didn’t want the showiness I just wanted the quality for me,. I still wear it every day whether I am swimming, tramping, white water rafting, 4WDing, working on the car, or working in the office, and still occasionally get the panic reaction from people “you’ve still got our watch on!”, to which I would calmly reply “That’s OK it’s a Rolex”. I would never sell it and still get a buzz every time I look at it.

Mr. Andrew, my father worked in Guatemala through the American Embassy in the mid 60’s to early 70’s. He ordered a Submariner Red from Switzerland through the embassy. My father was an outdoorsman. A Hemingway reincarnate. Hunter, spear fisherman and adventurist. I am blessed to have his watch which he gave me for a Christmas Gift. Thank you for sharing your story. Story time is a great addition to this channel. It adds a new dimension and you are a very good story teller. I was so happy when I finally was able to stop wearing a watch. To me it was always a symbol of being a slave to time. I haven't worn one now for over 10 years and I am still very happy not to have one. Now when it comes to fishing reels, that is a topic I can relate to. I have a lovely old Alvey reel that I call 'the winch' and it has caught many many very nice fish. It is certainly a prized possession as it was given to my in 1998 by a Welshman named John Davis. He had been a commando in WWII and we stuck up a friendship. He was an extraordinary man and I have always treasured the reel he gave me.

Great video and watch. I’ve had a Seiko divers watch for 33 years, I’ve put it through a lot, at it’s last service, it was accurate to 4 seconds a day, . I find Japanese movements extremely reliable and long lasting.

Loved this video! If we’re blessed we all have a story or two from the old days lol. I wear a very special (to me) watch as well. I used to work 12-15 hours a day 6 days a week for years in order to provide for my family. One year for Father’s Day my son bought me the watch I had been dreaming of for years. He said to me that of all the fathers in the world his was the best and deserved the best. It’s been on my wrist ever since. Overlanding, fishing, hunting, everywhere. My grandfather had just about every edition of National Geographic magazine from the first years to about 1990, and I would spend just about every opportunity I had while visiting to read the back issues. I would say that it was that early exposure to the vast work outside Canada that lead me to love the outdoors, adventure, and ultimately overlanding. Now in my mid-forties and living in the middle east and fondly remember those long hours not watching TV or playing video games but rather getting lost in the pages of those magazines while escaping the sub-zero days of the harsh Quebec winters. I too fell in love with the Rolex but unlike you, I have yet to buy my own iconic timepiece.

This story is why I enjoy watching you. You examine all your experiences and bettered yourself for them and are willing to admit your short comings so that not only you have learned from them, but those willing to truly listen and self examine ourselves, that we too many learn from your experiences. Oldie but goodie video, “the Rolex mythos explained”. I’ve collected, bought, sold Rolex since the early 1990’s and everything he mentioned is absolutely true about the brand. Buy a Rolex SS Sport watch today and you’ll never regret it. Not only is it a great watch and status symbol but will appreciate in value the whole time you own it. In these times of disposable products very few things will do that. It’s a lifetime purchase and something you will always cherish. One day 40 years hence you’ll pass it along for a new owner to enjoy another 40 years

Nice story:) I purchased a new OP 9 months ago and wear it all the time. As with any other Rolex, it keeps great time for a mechanical movement. I find mine "gains" approx 4 seconds a day maximum therefore stopping it for around 30 seconds once a week is no big hassle and sort of enjoyable to check against the atomic clock.

Love the story! It’s awesome when the story and history of an item, watch or otherwise, far outweighs the actual perceived value of the item in question. Absolutely priceless!

Its amazing listening to your story, I too as a youg man wanted one then at 30 I bought it, from the very first day I put it on my rist, ghere has been this close connection with it and have worn it every day for 20 years. When I get asked about watches, I say "there is no other like a ROLEX". Two of my close friends now have one, and its amazing to see they are treated with appreciation and respect.

Lovely piece of story telling. I bought my first Rolex 27 years ago It is now vintage a 1963 Oyster, which my girlfriend now wears. I now wear a stainless and gold Sub and have done for about 6 years, it is beautiful and was a purchased from my mothers estate. It keeps her alive and with me everyday when I look at it. I do not care what others think these are fabulous time pieces. The quality will last and last, I hope that one day I may pass them on to new caretakers.

Great story. The Submariner is probably the most iconic watch ever and most sought after for those of us growing up in the 70's, 80's, 90's and beyond. Its also the only watch you could ever need. It took me till.my 40th birthday till I was finally able to afford one in 2000 and have had it ever since. Like you, it's been to many places, gone swimming and snorkeling in the Caribbean, been to Europe and United States, worn during custom home building at construction sites, etc. Its seen a lot of history. It's been serviced now 3 times and comes back looking new every time. It's a lifetime piece.

I too fell in love with Rolex from the back covers of National Geographic magazine! Bought my first one (Rolex SeaDweller) in 1988 for $1,300-ish US. Bought my second Rolex (gold and stainless Submariner) in 1998. Also have 2 vintage (1950’s era) Omega SeaMasters I cherish (family watches). Great story!!

I became a Patreon and bought the torn trousers book and got interested in Overlanding because of this video. As a massive watch enthusiast/nerd and adventure exploring fan, this led me down a rabbit hole and now i can add overlanding to those other two passions. It is truly an exceptional piece. I have had the privilege of owning one through inheritance. My father bought his back in 1982 and gifted it to me on my wedding day in 2012. The watch is 5 years older than I am and has been exceptional. It has certainly aged over time but I can say my father definitely put it to use. He never took that watch off his wrist for years. It's seen some exceptional use over time. Its been in multiple countries, seen heavy use since he almost never took it off. He's cut trees, used angle grinders, welded, ridden motorcycles, gone camping, swimming and more with that watch on his wrist. I feel privileged to be able to continue the use of such a remarkable piece of engineering.

Loved the story. I've noticed the Rolex because I too have one. I also owned a Carfinal 66 Reel from Sweden but lost it in the last Divorce. My Rolex Submariner was a 1960 gift to my Father from a close friend that bought it in Thailand in 1956. My Father died in 1962 at 35 years of age and left it to me for my 1965 Graduation at 18. I'm now searching for a watchmaker or shop that I can trust to have it cleaned while keeping it original. I am now 76 years old and it's still working an on my wrist. Again, I loved the story. Though I don't own a Land or Range Rover, I do have a 1991 VW Vanagon Syncro camper that now has a 1.9L Turbo-Diesel Engine. And as with the watch, I still use the Vanagon every day and for what it was originally intended... Exploring. I''ve also followed your 4X4 videos and have recently changed to Lithium Iron Batteries in the Westfalia for a toatl of 412 AH. Cheers!

Awesome story.....I bought mine in 82 at 16 when with Dad in Hong Kong. Wear it every single day. Replaced the crystal (dropped it) and bezel. Fell off my hand while surfing and it wrapped around my pinky. Best thing I own. I lose 2-3 mins a week or so. This video was like watching me minus the rover, I had a Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. For decades, the old dial markers were coated with tritium paint, which was phased out in the 90s due to radioactivity and changing manufacturing standards. Tritium is luminous because of radioactive decay, so they remain constantly luminous, but the glow will disappear over many years. The later dials are coated in Superluminova, which is charged by light, but the glow fades over a few hours.

Absolutely wonderful story. Had a BIG smile on my face the whole way through as I could relate to so much of it. My 1680 Red Dial Sub was a high school graduation gift to myself back in 1975. I worked all summer to pay off that $519. (My mom, God rest her soul, would've killed me had she known I'd spent that much on a watch!) It's been a part of my wrist, and adventures, for 42+ years. One of my most prized possessions as well... Wouldn't trade it for the world. Thank you for this video!

The fact that they redialed the watch and most likely the hands in awfully depressing. The patina on the radium numbers would not only increase the value but character of your watch.

What a phenomenal story. Thank you so very much for sharing. I am exceptionally fortunate that for my 21st my family gave me a Rolex GMT Master 2. Just before my final exams at University my Uncle died, I later found out he had left me his Omega Seamaster that his Sister had given him, when she bought it from the first few years of her job! Fortunately my Aunt (the same one who gave my late Uncle the watch) and I had it restored. I love watches. I do own Breitling, Hublot, Zenith. But Rolex & Omega are still in my blood as it were.
