When it comes to roller coasters everyone has heard of the loop de loop. But have you heard of a cobra roll, a bunny-hop, or even a zero-G roll? Believe it or not, these are all names of roller coaster elements, just like the humble vertical loop. Today, roller coasters can do a huge number of unique things, most of which have their own special name. In this video we'll explore the most common elements found on roller coasters, including it's name and how it can be identified.

Gotta say, thank you for this video! Ever since I started getting into roller coasters on KZfaq I've heard all of these element names. They all sounded exotic and in a way inaccessible to someone like me who has a limited knowledge of roller coasters in general. This really simplified it all for me and helped me better understand these element names and what they look like. I have to admit I'm still learning these terms and I'll probably be referring to this video a bunch when I watch roller coaster reviews. Thanks again!

A lot of enthusiasts talk about the Double Flippity Whippy Slippy on Untamed as one of the best elements out there, but you can't forget the *a linguistic representation of the guitar solo from Pink Floyd's Money* on Firechaser Express. Personally, i'm all about a good Slithering Snaker Side to Side like on Maverick or Copperhead Strike.

@mgoulet002
@mgoulet002 3 жыл бұрын
Great coverage. I would also add a note on how a lot of the element types and styles were tied to their manufacturers. For example, how the original Boomerang was made by Arrow and commonly became referred to as the "Arrow Boomerang" despite the first installation in the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun referring to it as the "Kamikaze Curve". Then there was the Vekoma Boomerang which gave birth to the B&M Cobra Roll. Also, Arrow's boomerang was comprised of two "sidewinders" and one installation had the second sidewinder exiting the opposite side of the prevailing direction of travel, resulting in the "Bowtie" element on Dragon Mountain from 1983. Admittedly, the more that element design became more fluid and versatile, and thus less modular, the differences between the manufacturers have dissipated and aren't as clear cut as they were from 1975 through about 1991.

I kinda take a liking to the heartline roll. Its just rly interesting and its also the main part of what is probably my favorite ride overall (Cheetah Hunt). Bunny hills and their more extreme siblings (i forget the name lol) are also rly fun and I cant help but laugh every time. Good example being Mako Edit: idk if it would just be considered a normal but i also love that one special loop thing on Manta. Its so interesting when your in that position

My faviourate element on a coaster is a good old classic full inversion loop or 2 or 3 if I can get it...its just so satisfying going from a big deep dive off a hill plunging down in to a plain full inversion...the anticipation is amazing and it dosnt even need to be fast to enjoy just cruise on threw it all...love it miss it...the first coaster I actually remember the feeling of was torn down years ago...so sad...buy buy thunder loop thriller from dreamworld Queensland Australia.

Lagoon roll is pretty awesome essentially 3/4 of a heartline roll followed by 3/4 heartline the opposite direction traversed while going fairly slow.

I love the pretzel loops on B&M flyers. The best example is the one on Tatzu at Six Flags Magic Mountain. To get the best effect, ride in the very back row.

Lagoon roll, Maxx dive, and Untamed's 270° double-inverting corner stall seem to open a new trend in inversion design. I wonder what would come next. Quad-inverting pretzel knot, perhaps?

I just got back from my five day trip to SF Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm five hours ago! After that, (and my 2 week trip to England in late Oct/Early Nov.) I can appreciate the footage. My favourite elements are drops, camelbacks, and post MCBR dips, (I guess I'm a traditional coaster enthusiast) but I'll enjoy any element done well. It all depends on the coaster; for example The Smiler has none of these elements and it's my favourite coaster at Alton Towers. Then again; my favourite element in that coaster is the airtime hill in the 2nd half. Too much more for me to cover here right now, except to say thanks for this video!

I was one of the last people to go on The Swarm when it ran a set of backwards seats on the end of the train. Went with some friends, they all sat in the front facing row, I sat on my own, literally, on my own, in the backwards seat. It was a completely different ride, 100% more amazing than facing forward
@coasterbot

Really? I always found backwards seats to be boring, they took the fun of the near misses out of the ride!

I still remember my first vertical loop...and that was on the Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure in 2015, back when it was known as California Screamin'. Silver Bullet at Knott's Berry Farm gave me more firsts in terms of inverting elements, being the cobra roll, the zero-g roll, and the two corkscrews.

@@coasterbot Out of all the elements I just described, I'm in a debate between the cobra roll and the zero-g roll.

To be exact, I dunno whether I prefer the feeling of weightlessness from the zero-g roll or the sense of speed going down the latter half of a cobra roll. It's really hard to decide.
