Say you're a jammer approaching a formation at high speed. You notice there would be enough room for you to juke and take the outside, but you're not sure you would then be able to forbid your momentum from taking you out of bounds. Darn, right? What a missed opportunity!
Jumping on your toe stops to have only very brief moments of contact with the floor can be helpful to keep control over your feet as you work with momentum. In this scenario, it can mean taking long steps to extend air time. Also, -and this is key-, notice in the video how the angle of my feet decrease with each of the first 4 steps I take, until I manage to reestablish my stance, with my hips square towards the direction I want to take. This is what I mean by "working with the momentum": shift your hips, take long diagonal steps, let it take you towards the outside, but with each step you take, gain back some more control.
