Our shop specializes in suspension and one of the jobs we do is custom leaf manufacturing.
Here is a quick example of one of the many jobs we do around the shop.
This video shows up making a custom main leaf for a discontinued leaf spring from the 1950s
The leaf is heated up and then rolled on our eye roller.
Check out the process and if you want to see more content like this please let me know in the comments down below.

Can you fuse two pieces together for a longer spring?
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 2 жыл бұрын
If you are good at forge welding you could probably get to pieces to stick together, but you would have to bring it up to forge welding temperature and then re-quench it and heat treat it. HOWEVER, I believe that spring steel is quite tricky to get to stick together because of how hard it is. Just take a little extra effort.

@@simcoespring After you made that eye. Do you have to do anything else to treat the steal because of heating the spring? Wish you weren't so far away.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 3 жыл бұрын
@@upnorthyooper1196 I know that when I heat up the steel that I cannot melt it. I also know that if you heat it past oxidization the steel will burn, which is why I have to paint the heat back and forth so fast. I have always wondered about the heat treatment myself. I have rolled over 100 eyes over the last 20 years and always wondered that. Even if you heat spring steel past 400 degrees you are removing the temper from the steel, and i was closer to 1200. Any information about this from metallurgists would be awesome.
@thegroundhurts
@thegroundhurts 2 жыл бұрын
@@simcoespring I know this is an old post but I’ll comment. When you are heating the eye to roll it you are also annealing the steel. You usually don’t roll eyes on already hardened and tempered material. If you do the whole thing needs annealed to be treated again. Most high carbon spring steels need brought up to at least 1525f and then quenched. Usually you don’t quench above 1600f or you can quench crack it. Below 1525f it starts to fall out of phase and you don’t get the desired lattice structure. After oil quenching usually you run 900f for two hours to temper. This gets you about 39-42hrc.
