The first album, really, should be considered solely by the original UK version. The impact in 1964 of an album with no type at all on the front was enormous, as was the fact that they're not smiling and haven't bothered combing their hair. That was a big deal at the time, an affront to all upstanding citizens. It gets my pick for #1, followed by Exile on Main Street, Through the Past Darkly (the octagonal vinyl version), the 'original' Beggars Banquet, the only one we knew for about twenty years (an invitation to a banquet on the front, with a glorious photo of the actual banquet in the gatefold, sure beats looking at a dirty toilet) and December's Children (I love the composition). Sticky Fingers gets the thumbs down because, with years of being shelved and re-shelved, the zipper always ends up coming off.

Totally agree on the first album almost included on top 5 the arrogance of not proclaiming who you are on debut album front cover was genius hype in 64 and photo fits perfectly the us title immediately ruins that vibe and worse probably looked Tee back then.

I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! I agree on most of yer guys take(s) on The Stones' album covers. - Why _'didn't'_ they ever use their iconic logo? - The _'luv-it'/'hate-it'_ on 'Tatoo You'. (totally makes sense) Some comments mention 'Beggars Banquet'. But, I don't think it qualifies. Cuz that _'toilet'_ image wasn't on the US version. (most of us didn't see that image 'til later) One of you listed a 'greatest-hits' cover. So, my pick is: *'Through The Past Darkly'* The iconic blue 'stop-sign' album. They're posed in extreme close-up with their faces 'smashed-up' against some glass. (apparently) And, their hair is WAY LONGER than last we'd seen them. 🎵 *"All get together and ROCK all night!"* 🎵 - Dave B.

Great video. May I point out that the Stones logo is featured on the Blue and Lonesome LP cover. My least favourites are: 5. Bridges to Babylon (just slightly worse than Voodoo Lounge) 4. Tattoo You (to me, it doesn't even look like Jagger on the cover with his hair swept back) 3. Hackney Diamonds (the music's good, but the cover looks cheap and nasty) 2. Dirty Work (Yes, those yellow pants with the leg up on the couch are horrendous) 1. Emotional Rescue (It's one of the worse album covers of all time - sorry!) Favourites: 5. Their Satanic Majesties Request (Particularly the lenticular image, it's amazing) 4. Sticky Fingers (it's iconic) 3. Beggars Banquet (the toilet cover exemplifies the Stones image and music) 2. Get Yer Ya Ya's Out (surprised nobody mentioned this, always makes me smile) 1. Let It Bleed (It's just inspired madness)

Bridges To Babylon (I just don't get it, pleasant colors, but seemingly nothing to do with anything) 4. Flashpoint 5. Rolling Stones Now! (just too busy) A few others... LOVE - Thru The Past, Darkly. Emotional Rescue. Steel Wheels is not a great album cover, but something about it resonates with the music within it. It's cool, corporate and sleek. I don't mind Voodoo Lounge either. It's not great, but that character does look Voodoo.

Trivia corner - the cake for the Let it Bleed cover was baked by a young cook called Delia Smith who went on to be arguably the number 1 cook on British TV from about the late '70s to the late '90s. Someone else pointed out the famous logo being used on some hit compilations. Here's what I remember about "Sucking in the 70s." I was about 12 or 13 years old when that album came out, and I purchased it as a birthday present for my best friend. He LOVED the Stones, and he loved that album. But thanks to "sucking" in the title - not to mention the famous logo as large as the album itself - he felt he had to keep the record hidden from his parents. He only ever played it after school and hid it in time before his parents came home from work. EDIT: If I remember correctly, the logo was a huge, huge sticker on the shrink wrap of the album. If you tore off the shrink wrap, you'd lose the logo. So he did what a lot of people did, just slit the opening and kept the shrink wrap on the album, to preserve the "best part" of the cover. Anybody else remember it being this way?

My top 5: 1. Aftermath (US) - the cover depicted the Stones evolving into a darker phase. Mick and Keith looking very introspective and pensive now writing all their own material. Love the double shot ghosting images and mod clothing - psychedelia to come.... 2. Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) - their last great cover featuring Brian Jones. The band just looks really cool on this cover. 3. Between The Buttons - Gered Mankowitz's eerie Primrose Hill photo shoot capture the Stones at their most "trippiest". This is their "Beatles for Sale" cover - looking tired from the excessive touring and the drugs. 4. Flowers - not really a studio album but a compilation of previously released songs, but very much of its time issued during the summer of love. Note that Brian's flower stem has no leaves on it. 5. Goat's Head Soup - the Stones' riding the 'glam" wagon of '73. Honorable mention - Sticky Fingers, Beggar's Banquet (alternate cover)

I agree with Kram, across their discography they don’t have many good album covers. The early photography is not great. Actually don’t mind Let It Bleed, Black and Blue, or A Bigger Bang, not great but not bad. Some Girls is pretty good, I like how the colors make it pop and an amusing idea really. Sticky Fingers and Exile are also good. Emotional Rescue, Undercover, Dirty Work, Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon, and Hackney Diamonds are all bad. Don’t really like the Goats Head Soup or Tattoo You covers either. They try and go artsy but much of the time the covers just aren’t very pleasing to the eye and some of them are gimmicky on top of it. Very awesome discussing the album covers, would be cool to see more of that as people always have different opinions on what makes a good album cover so it’s a really interesting topic.

I love The Stones but their covers, like their albums are a hit and miss for me! Best Covers (My Opinion) 1. Tattoo You (Even as a 9-year-old, I knew this cover belonged to The Stones, iconic!) 2. Steel Wheels (I like it, leave me alone!) 3. Sticky Fingers (Another iconic Stone's cover) 4. It's Only Rock and Roll (Great cover, overrated song) 5. Beggar's Banquet (Rough and dirty, for whatever reason I think of heroin and rock, fitting for 1968.) Honorable Mention: Voodoo Lounge: Yeah, the drawing looks a little elementary, but that character reminds me of a spooky go-go dancer. Call me crazy! The Worst (My Opinion) 1. Some Girls (Ugly guys make even uglier women!) 2. Dirty Work (I think everyone agrees it sucks!) 3. Goat's Head Soup (Mick Jagger's not a pretty guy, sorry!) 4. Hackney Diamonds (Lame) 5. Let It Bleed (I don't get it!) Honorable Mention: Bridges to Babylon: I think your criticism of Steel Wheels better applies to this one. That lion looks like a cut and paste job to me!

Love this video! I think the Stones are pretty awfully represented by their album covers with a few notable exceptions (everything from 67 to Exile, B&B and Some Girls). The biggest, most consistent criticism is that there is rarely any connection between the artwork and the content of the album, either directly or thematically. All of the following are appalling examples of this (or good - take your pick!): Bridges to Babylon Voodoo Lounge Steel Wheels Tattoo You Flashpoint Emotional Rescue Some other shockers you missed: Blue and Lonesome (the all-time worst - it's so lazy) Forty Licks (another, like B&L that disproves Joe's point that they don't use their logo on their covers) Live Licks Love you Live Goats Head Soup Finally, on another point, has any other band's covers (including VU) been so influenced by Andy Warhol? Sticky Fingers and Love you live were designed by him, while Some Girls and the lips logo were heavily influenced by him...

I really like let it bleed’s art - it’s so weird but cool. I have to say black and blue is my least favourite, jagger’s lips are just way too red. Really liking all the stones stuff you guys are doing!

1. Exile on Main Street - Love the craziness and gritty bleak vibe of the Robert Frank b/w pics of circus freaks, etc. It takes guts to put out a cover like that, and for that matter, a record that doesn't do anything (at first) to ingratiate itself to the audience. With Beggars Banquet through Exile, they were clearly LEADING. At a certain point, their covers and their albums, were content to follow and suck up. 2. Let It Bleed - An inspired, witty image, once seen, never forgotten. They must have been high when they came up with it. 3. Sticky Fingers - obscene, but er, *ballsy*, literally and figuratively, 4. Some Girls - cheeky, witty retro ads and presentation of former Hollywood actresses (at least until they sued to have their images and names removed). 5. Their Satanic Majesties' Request - a creative, if absurd, presentation of the Stones as psychedelicized, with cool holographic image. 6. Voodoo Lounge - a simple, elegant painting that does just enough to suggest voodoo without over-doing it. 7. Tattoo You - another sheerly bizarre image on the front which is supposedly Jagger, but barely looks like him, but which is striking enough in its own right. With a tattooed Keef on the reverse (the tattoo helps to hide his gaunt, wasted appearance) , 8. Beggar's Banquet - A deliberately ugly image, which can only be celebrated for its gall. It's not something I particularly want to look at, but it's different. 9. Black and Blue - Simple presentation of the band at different positions and perspectives, fetching in its own way, 10. Emotional Rescue - The thermographic photos are "cool"-looking. 11. All their 60s albums before Beggar's Banquet are equally non-descript, typical early 60s covers, mostly b/w photos of the members of the band in some variation, not bad, but not particularly creative. 12. Undercover - not repulsive, but a bit obvious in its sexuality. 13. Steel Wheels - must be the dullest of all their post-1968 albums, the art director clearly wasn't even trying. 14. A Bigger Bang - an idea that has been done to death, and this perfunctory variation does nothing for me. 15. Bridges to Babylon - I don't get it at all, what does an Egyptian lion have to do with the Stones? 16. Goat's Head Soup - Well, just look at it, it looks like they threw it together in a few quick minutes, and it's fugly AF. 17. It's Only Rock and Roll - An uninspired idea for a painting, badly executed. 16. Dirty Work - Garish colours, trying to look au courant in the 80s, ugh - 17. Hackney Diamonds - Talk about garish and tasteless, reeks of neediness for attention as does the sugar-coated crap on the actual album.

Joseph Wright of Derby is a tenebrist. But the album cover has conceptual confusion: it shows A Bigger Flash rather than A Bigger Bang.

Some Girls and Satanic Majesties were my favourites as a kid looking at my dad's records, he has the SM cover with the hologram effect which was always cool. Sticky Fingers is of course, iconic as is Exile. The one that is my least favourite is probably Undercover mostly because it's cheesy looking and haphazard to me, they could have executed the concept better. Voodoo Lounge and Steel Wheels aren't great either, nothing particularly Stones-y about VL especially.

They’ve had a lot of bad covers, especially from the mid-eighties onwards. Too many that look like they were knocked out in half an hour on a computer. The Hackney Diamonds cover could be a 90s Judas Priest album (although I really like the album, and ultimately it’s the music that counts).

1. Let It Bleed 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Some Girls 4. Exile On Main Street 5. Undercover (I like it far more than the album, looks seedy) 6. Their Satanic Majesties Request 7. Tattoo You 8. Flowers (if compilations are included) 9. Hot Rocks 10. A Bigger Bang 11) It's Only Rock'n'Roll 12) Goats Head Soup 13) Black And Blue 14) Between The Buttons 15) Aftermath 16) Bridges To Babylon 17) Beggar's Banquet 18) Voodoo Lounge 19) Blue And Lonesome 20) Dirty Work (looks 80s at least and has the band on it) 21) Emotional Rescue (bad album, bad cover) 22) Steel Wheels (WTF?) 23) Hackney Diamonds (what is this? trying to jump the Barbie train? and one of the most wasted opportunities of a gatefold sleeve of all time, who designed this crap? Ivanka? Don't care much about the other covers.

Favorites: Let It Bleed 🎂 Tattoo You Bridges to Babylon 🦁 Some Girls 💅🏼 Satanic Majesties 🧙 Least favorite... Dirty Work but it's also kinda so bad that it's great 😂.. Blue & Lonesome is their iconic logo but it's such a generic cover sadly. Beggars Banquet but the plain off white one that's really boring. Undercover, again so bad that it's kinda great though lol. Neither Aftermath covers are that great. Other early ones are cool for the times though. I don't hate Steel Wheels cover haha probably not bottom 5 but definitely not middle to top. I dunno. ✌🏼🎧

Interesting - many of the covers are bad aren’t they? Steel Wheels. LOL. So bad. I like Tattoo You especially the back (Keith), Emotional Rescue is alright, Some Girls is fun. The plain white Beggars Banquet invitation gets the job done. Sticky Fingers is creepy but iconic. Some Girls had the die cut deal it was fun to remove the inner sleeve and see the heads and read the credits.
