@@EdwinCannistraci I say best since the bangers on undercover. Now that's an underrated album. At least they were still a band at that point. Mick's hidden solo career put into the 50 million deal was CBS thinking that Mick was going to be as big as Springsteen. When that failed Jagger came back because he couldn't handle his ego being crushed. But in my mind the real raw Stones ceased to exist. Then you got the Vegas style shows. I still would go see them live but I knew there were no lines of coke on the piano and you got the extra musicians on stage etc. Terrible.

Thank you, I had the same impression, although I lack your knowledge, but I am a singer/songwriter myself, don't use anything but real guitars and a Fender Twin. I am 55 years old and I wanted to make the day of buying my last Stones album something special, so I took my bike and drove the 32 km to Cologne in the pouring rain, like I had done in my youth. When I arrived at Saturn's in Cologne, fucking soaking wet, they played the album in the store, so I listened to it almost completely while I moved around. Know what I did? I put it back in the rack and went out with a Guns'n'Roses-album I had missed back in the days. Man, I was so angry, I didn't even catch a cold...

Ever since Sticky Fingers most fans have a problem with the new album and yearn for the “old stuff”. However, over time, the new songs seep into the subconscious sea of Stones songs in one’s hind brain, forgetting where they can from until one realizes that this is as good as anything the Stones have ever done. According to the Stones themselves, they really wanted to make a “solid Stones album”. They all worked hard on this album and had a lot of help in the production excluding Andrew Watt. This albums production is slick, shiny and new, which most Stones fans criticize and are not used to, myself included. However, the songs are very well structured with catchy “middle eights” that provides the song it’s depth and it’s transition to the heightened Stones jam which we have not enjoyed on an album since “Looked What the Cat Dragged In”. The one criticism I do have is that the songs are not in the proper order. Song placement makes a huge difference on one’s perception of the album. Angry becomes a better song if it’s placed deep in the second side instead of the lead song. Live by the Sword should be the lead song followed by Whole Wide World and Bite My Head Off. Sweet Sounds of Heaven should be the albums closer. At 60 years the Stones have amazingly stayed relevant and popular with generations of fans. It’s albums like these where the Stones have to step out of there comfort zone of Chuck Berry’s shadow and walk the tightrope of producing something for the next generation of fans while maintaining their musical blues integrity. As a whole and after several listenings, I think this album rates as solid and It’s Only Rock and Roll.

He cannot stop firing syllables, rather than give the music and whatever poetry he can still scrape up, a little ROOM to groove. Quincy Jones said it was the space between the music that mattered (or some such thing) and that was always the classic Stones approach. Here Mick just cannot shut up.

The Rolling Stones (BAND) died in stages. The first death was when Brian came to the realization he created a monster called the Kieth and Mick circus instead of the band he envisioned, the second death was when Brian was fired. The third death was when Taylor realized circus life was not his bag. The forth death was when Wyman realized the same. The final blow was when loyal soldier CHARLIE passed. There is a reason an album full of blues covers was the best product since the early 80s. Mick can't write a good song from a dry well. He used to be among the finest lyricists in the world, but it's like the devil himself came like a thief in the night and sucked away all his clever ideas. The others acted as enablers for too long. There was one other death stage, it was when Mick did the Martha and the Vandellas cover. I just.knew from that point on the bright light was going dim.

As a long time Stones fan, I have to say I totally agree with you, it's their worst album ever, so uninspired. My guess is that it's basically a Mick jagger project, and Keith and Ronnie were forced into it. They have though this tremendous marketing machine going everywhere saying it's a great album, and some people are so dumb they actually get convinced it is apparently. Whatever, we can still listen to all the rest:)

I yield to no-one in my love for the Stones, but for me this new album shows the Rolling Stones are done. What we have today is not the Rolling Stones; it is the Mick 'n Keith Show, with the further terrible disadvantage that Keith can't play much any more. Every song on this album is forgettable. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a sad attempt at gospel by the band which effortlessly did Shine A Light and Let It Loose. Dreamy Skies is a country song, sure, but it simply doesn't compare to No Expectations or Dead Flowers or Sweet Virginia, or even Do You Think I Really Care, which the band left off Some Girls for 30 years! Jagger is a force of nature (even allowing for whatever autotuning took place) but I don't understand the production on HD and they don't feel like the Stones any more. I think they were never the same after Wyman left in 1992, but accepted Darryl's playing because the band still swung, they were still loose. That's gone now. Nothing against Steve Jordan but he's a basher. That was fine for Chuck Berry, but Jordan lacks Charlie's instinctive finesse and jazz triplets. I could go on, but sadly I agree with this review.

I wrote a mini review for Facebook, which I'll repost especially for you here: "Exclusive KK's Priest The Sinner Rides Again Review from Eddy: It's an absurdly metal album that I like more than I should. Not as strong as their debut but a solid followup that will be in my heavy rotation this month. Pros: Ripper brings a lot of energy and passion vocally and of course the guitar work is exceptional. Cons: cliched lyrics and too many Gregorian chants. If you're someone who has listened to Painkiller more than 100 times in your life and Jugulator more than 10 times, you might dig this album. Favorite song: Strike of the Viper. These guys should totally open for Rob's Priest...!!!! 🔥🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼"

Yeah, I only touched upon this, but it's one thing to do an album without Charlie this late in the game, it's another thing to not honor him and his contribution to the Stones' sound by not even attempting to replicate his style on the album. Like Stevie Young is playing in Malcolm Young's style and thus honoring it IMO. Charlie had a very specific style and it was a big part of the Stones' sound and I feel like that wasn't recognized when making this album (which I thought should've been treated as a tribute to Charlie in the same way PWR/UP was a tribute to Malcolm Young).

I posted this review elsewhere, but had to repost. I wasn't as strong against as this reviewer.....but now I think I should have been. I agree with this video quite a bit. It is a real shit album, My View: There is a certain amount of bravado, cliche, and cool that goes into great rock and roll. Mick Jagger seems to know this better than anyone. As evidenced by any number of examples from his solo albums and many of his assumed contributions to RS albums, his writing style has a flavor. That flavor seems to be all over Hackney Diamonds. It should be stated that likely one of Rock’s biggest faux pas’s, is to look like you are trying too hard. When I first heard the album titles I had a bad feeling about what we would get…..but as you can’t judge a book by its cover (see what I did there). I was hoping to be proved wrong. I wasn’t. Angry (C-). Is it trying to be ‘Stonesy’? Chorus from Andrew Watt? I’m all for progress, but it might have sounded more interesting ‘in a room raw’ Listen to the guitars live at Racket. For THIS album it is the right choice for single. Get Close (C). Not bad, in line with stuff they have been putting out since the 90’s. Depending on You (C-). Ok. Bite My Head Off (F). ‘Why you bite my Head off now, Why you bite my head off yah, why you bite my head of yah yah’ WTF. Is this an Easy Sleazy re-tread? Hard to know which one is worse. Just NO. Whole Wide World (F). With a chorus that sounds like something a boy band would sing and what is with that accent? Makes Winning Ugly sound like Beethoven’s 5th. Dreamy Skies (D). Some of the guitar work is ok. Slide sound reminiscent of No Expectations, which as slide sounds go, is pretty good. Mess it Up (F). See WWW above. Parts of the Instagram song he was playing around with? An ok idea gone terribly wrong. Live by the Sword (F). Oh dear. Does Mick think guns=cool? (Gunface, Gun, Mother of a Man, etc). If you live like a whore you better be hardcore……great advice. I hope they paid Bill well. Driving me too Hard (D-). Has a swing I suppose. Tell Me Straight (F). Not much here Keith. I wanted it to be good. Sweet Sounds of Heaven (C). Along with Get Close, one of the better Hackney Diamonds’ songs. Rolling Stone Blues (A). Because it’s a classic Muddy Waters song. Although totally unnecessary in this context. Not to dwell on Dirty Work but as an oft maligned album, listening to it after Hackney Diamonds, is interesting. Apart from the sound of the 80’s dud, it seemed fresh comparatively. Is it more raw and ‘band’ sounding? Yes. Is it more interesting (Too Rude, Had it with You, Harlem Shuffle)? Yes. Are songs like One Hit and Sleep Tonight better than anything on Hackney Diamonds? Yes. It does however benefit from a younger RS unit? So now what do we expect from the Stones in 2023? Do we want to hear them do Jumping Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil, Satisfaction, etc live over and over again until they drop? Not really. As a fan of artists of many disciplines I do like to see how people continue to create as they age. Many of The Rolling Stones contemporaries Dylan (Rough and Rowdy Ways), McCartney (Egypt Station, III), and Springsteen (Letter to you) have faired better. There is just more of interest and the songwriting is honestly better. So back to Mick Jagger. He seems to be both their biggest weakness and strength. I don’t doubt, as has been reported, that he is the force behind getting this album made. His voice at 80 is strong, full of mid-range and represents a great opportunity for them to continue to create good records. You maybe able to hear the age in Keith and Ronnie’s playing……so what… embrace it. If this is truly a new era post Charlie, I hope the next album or two hits a higher bar. I will be rooting for them.

Good to hear all opinions, and if everyone rated the same albums as the best, music wouldn't be as rich as it is. One week in, I have to say I love it. The feel, the melodies, its a keeper. Maybe the best since Steel Wheels. I rate Voodoo, Bridges & Bang but Hackney may - time will tell - surpass those for me. Hyperbole is flying in the reviews, agreed. For me it works, and is very high quality. Early days, but it does have the potential to be the best of the 1989- onwards era. Mick could still dance, by doing all kinds of spins in his chair. Maybe he could do wheelies. 🥲 This next idea, seems to me to be, brilliant! 🥲 They take their old song recordings, and remove Mick's vocal tracks on them. He records new vocals, with new lyrics and a new title for each. Then, they put the songs together, and release new albums. They could keep this going until they are all at least 90. Playing is great just not a strong Keith riff album. But then I can't really think of a memorable riff since Love Is Strong since '83. But im hard on my boys. I think there was much better stuff in the can than got on those albums.Even from the same sessions. Not even thinking about going back and re-recording some of those older fantastic songs. The Some Girls and Tattoo You outtakes alone would have made another classic album.Or at least used some of them and made an album like this one that's about 50 mins. Lots of bad mistakes made.Im guessing it was Mick and Don. Hopefully Don is gone for good. Especially how he handled the new Mick vocals to the outtakes on the Deluxes. You can tell a mile away that they were new vocals when it would have been easy to mix them like the records they came from. The tech is available. Really there's only a couple of Mick songs I like from the "modern" period. Production was awful on all those records. The Keith songs were generally fantastic.
