I spent nearly a decade looking after a 9 hole but 18 tee golf course on my own . also an 8 x8 rink lawn bowls green as part of the club ..I had two 24" Scott Bonnar 65 walk behind greens mowers with split rollers . I once asked should I use the lawn bowls roller to roll the greens and was told by the old timer greenkeeper that retired that i replaced not to as it only adds to compaction of the greens .. One day I decided to try anyway on the 9th /18th green as it was adjacent to the bowls shed ..At the time I was playing off 6 and was the pennant captain of our golf pennant team . After the Saturday comp later that day I was intrigued by the comments about the putts rolling smoother on the green I'd single cut on the Friday but double rolled on the Saturday .. It was great ...Not practical and we didn't have a way of carting the roller around the course but it was a fun experiment ..Our greens were a mix of fescue and bent because our area was a heavy frost area and red fescue was really tolerant as was browntop bent hence the mix ..

I'm quite familiar with this piece of equipment. Ours goes a little faster, but steering has play in it. We replaced the entire steering column and chain underneath. We kept breaking the chain tention springs, so we've had to put longer ones

They are fun and games until the pedal linkage drops out or the pedal snaps or sticks then you go for a swim.

Hi, I'm a rookie greenskeeper, wondering in veterans of this could give me some tips? They put me on this once, I struggled with the unusual steering, when to break, and this compounded problems about staying in a proper line with each pass.

did you ever figure out how to roll greens? think of it like a vacuum. like a zig zag do a straight line then a angled to the other end then when rolling back go straight to your last point on the on the other end. when you come to a stop. near the end you coast to a stop and always hard stop on your approach.. and never turn on your green or you'll make creases on the turf

How long does it take to roll a green? I've read one operator can do 9 greens in about 2 hours but what's the actual run-time look like? He looked like he was moving pretty quick but also the drum isn't that wide.

sounds about right, we have one a little larger can do all 18 in about 3

it takes me about 3 hours 30 to do an entire 18 hole course. it helps if you do it early in the morning where you can see your lines on the dew. thats what I think makes it quick for me.

I have 2 of these rollers one is electric, and one is gas. The electric one works better and is a lot heavier

I got dragged along on an astonishing amount of golf courses when I was a kid, while my Ma whooped my Dad at golf everytime, I had no idea the amount of effort it took just to make those golf courses.

Rolling isn't needed for speed for these days. New bentgrass cultivars get extremely fast from regular thatch match and mowing at .1005 of an inch. The greens I'm superintendent for on a private course run 11 to 13 all the time and we roll once a week

The worst thing about this machine is when you first start out operating it. Rewiring your brain for to drive takes a bit. When moving from right to left its moving "forward" meaning steering is normal. But from left to right it's in reverse meaning steering is backwards. Left is right.. right is left.. The first 3 greens for a newbie are going to be jacked. And I hate how I'm the only one where I work that can operate it.

Just put the aftermarket rollers on the old toro triplexes. Operates just like a greens mower.

Why wouldn't you just design the thing so the driver faces forward, like every other riding machine ever, for ease/familiarity of use.

Because 50% of the time you'd be reversing and having to look over your shoulder

the turning radius of the thing is of a whale, and rolling sideways helps with the process

@@rockinrollinntrollin616 that would mean you would have to turn the seat every time you went to the end of a pass... look at any industrial warehouse forklift. The seat always faces sideways to prevent neck fatigue

It's called areation...what about the compaction on the green? It's called fringe BTW. Aeration and verticutting. We also do vertidrain twice a year on my course I'm superintendent for.

@@johndzurilla4173 True but over a period of time this noise can do damage. Should always wear PPE when operating equipment. Of course this is what i would do so i am not trying to debate what is right or wrong, just MO.
