When Chase is describing Tony Sirico’s surprised look, I immediately thought of the scene where Paulie realizes Finn is Meadow’s boyfriend. Paulie really is a cartoon character.

What's crazy is that just hearing him talk, not just in this but the few other times through the years that people have recorded sitting down to talk to him for an extended period of time, it's clear just from hearing him talk that he's a genius in terms of knowing himself, knowing other people and social situations, and knowing art. You rarely actually get that from other people who created works of art or science that are clearly genius. It's more like "did this person just luck into what they created? WTF?" With David Chase, it's like, of COURSE he created this. How could anyone else have possibly done it.

What he created and left us with is by far a masterpiece that will never go away, and as people get older and can see it, they are watching greatness bc it's the greatest show ever. The fact that he hints that the studio is mis-marketing the movie makes me sigh with relief. He seems to scoff at the “Tony Soprano origin” angle as much as we do. So I’m really glad the film isn’t really about that.

@@MD-zy9no Exactly, I also had a friend who claimed Sopranos was his favourite show. I recently talked to him, after years, and to my surprise, he was not even aware of the huge depth this show has. He loved it, but only got quite a basic layer of it, the drama, characters' features, etc, whereas the ocean is far deeper than that.

Got a present of the box set off my kids for Father's day this year. Now rewatching it with my eldest daughter and she's blown away by the series. Just like I was over 20 years ago. That's a mark of how good The Sopranos really is.

@@StuUngar sure, being the second in home cable provider( who could forget "ON" tv company, the first in our area .) Cash wise it was a big risk, each episode is basically half a feature film, in a 12 - 16 week schedule per season. Very expensive, and it paid off and set the tone for tv drama on a new level forever.

This is one of the best interviews and interviewers I have ever seen. I usually give credit where due to the interviewee but this guy Alan strikes a perfect balance of interesting, well thought out questions and actually letting the subject speak. Fantastic.

as a millenial, to answer david's question why younger people are enjoying his old show: I think the sopranos is of timeless quality and it shouldn't matter what generation you were born, to be able to appreciate a classic. but when you create something, you shouldn't easily assume what you made is that great, so i understand why he asked.

i love the sopranos- i watch it or just put it on more than anythng else. i grew up in LI. & as a kid we went to my grandparents apt in manhatten with my parents & bro my uncles fams & cousins would come & my sicilian grandma would make us all dinner.the recreation of that culture thats in the sopranos is more real than ive seen in any othr thing.my wife once askd me why i have it on for years now & i told her it comforts me bcz it does. i hope the movie is great. p.s.aftr christopher dies- paulie told tony that if tony was like a dad to christopher then he(paulie) was his "dutch uncle".

Great interview…Chase is by all accounts a really tough interview but I thought this guy did an excellent job. Some of the questions were a bit generic but some of the more off-beat questions really seemed to get Chase thinking. Really enjoyed it - definitely worth half an hour of my time!

this interview is a good example of why art is so amazing. You want him to say something that speaks to you or changes you or explains something about life that could help you, deep down we’re all looking for an answer, but he’s just a regular guy talking about the logistics of his job. The only way he can compel you is by tuning into something bigger than himself and channeling that into creating a piece of art that lets you pull a message out that resonates with you to make into something of your own.
