@@HypocrisyLaidBareits basically an aircraft engine that has been adjusted to work in tanks Edit: its based off the Merlin as its the same displacement of 27L, the Griffon is a much bigger 37L. Not sure if the Griffon was ever used in tanks

Sounds like a Spitfire aircraft. It is a similar engine, without the 2 stage supercharger.

@@Jan_372the meteor was basically a merlin without the superchargers and super high compresion and the like... 1700 cubic inch, 600 or so horsepower. That's how I knew it was relatively normal to see that much fire from the thing on startup.

The mighty Meteor engine! There were a few differences, but it's pretty much a Merlin aero engine without a supercharger.

An acquaintance of mine has one in the garage under a living complex. We fired up a late night some years ago. Car alarms and a lot of very angry people showed up. Now that's what a Rolls Royce does! It brings people together!

In 1974, we started a Chevy 454 in shop class without the exhaust manifolds attached and you could hear that thing all across the neighborhood. That Rolls had to be way louder than this video would lead us to believe!

@@ianhudson2193 only things different between the merlin and the meteor was the 2 speed supercharger and the prop gearbox removed and fuel quality and slight tweeking on the ignition timing so meteor could run the chappy motor pool fuel🤣🤣

Very nice. I started a rotary that was sitting for 20 odd years. Lots of light oil and ether in the intake got it going and the exhaust was glowing. Ran like a charm

The British Meteor Tank engine is a derated version of Merlin engine that powered WWII aircraft like the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Lancaster bomber. Post WWII the engine was used in the Centurion series of tanks. Mark from Melbourne Australia
